I've been training at Wudang Kungfu for the past 3 years so far. If you are looking for a place where you can train forms AND application, within the same gym, this is the best place in Seattle to do it. I have explored lots of different martial arts gyms in the greater Seattle area, and lots of them have different things to offer. However, it was difficult to find traditional Chinese gungfu that is rooted in the culture and practice of Chinese martial arts that also teaches real, effective, full contact application. This is the place to do it! Lu Laoshi and Chang Laoshi are both incredibly knowledgeable, but also down to earth and humble. They really know their stuff, through the historical lineage and practice. There are many amazing non-Chinese instructors of the Chinese martial arts, but I personally appreciate that both head instructors are ethnically and culturally Chinese while also being attuned to western culture and the norms of western students. This is not a school with Japanese style belt progression, or a very hierarchical student culture. Both Instructor Lu and Instructor Chang expect students to think critically for themselves, and for the instruction to make sense because it works, not just because "they say so." If you approach it with an open mind, there is much to learn at this school, no matter your training goals. Chang Laoshi has many years fighting in the ring, testing his application skills in ring fighting, to complement his deep understanding of the traditional forms, and Lu Laoshi has a rich knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine in addition to her martial arts practice. Whether you want to learn internal martial arts for demonstration, cultivate qigong, learn about the culture and history of Chinese martial arts, or spar and compete in sanda full contact ring fighting, this is a place where you can do some or all of those things. There are many places in Seattle where you can learn traditional Chinese gungfu, and internal martial arts. There are also many places that will teach you full contact grappling and striking, for muay thai/BJJ/MMA etc. However, if you are trying to learn both of these dimensions of the martial arts and not just one or the other, this is in my opinion the best place in Seattle for it. You can learn forms, qigong, application, open hand, and weapons, all under one roof and with two deeply qualified instructors. There are places that are probably more "affordable" if you are just looking for the cheapest place to train and get a workout, but in this case, I think the expertise and thoroughness of instruction is more than justified, especially considering the generosity of both instructors when it comes to time and answering questions after official class hours. read more

After attending Wudang academy for over a year I can confidently say that I was in the best shape of my life! My flexibility dramatically improved but also overall body connection/fitness. The chronic pain in my knee completely resolved. If you want to live a long, happy, and healthy life this is the secret! They have many different classes/styles of martial arts that can be practiced, and the masters are amazing at helping you choose the best style to fit your goals. If I had more time I would study as many styles as possible. During my time there I practiced Baguzahang (Circular Boxing), Taijiquan (Tai Chi), and Qigong. A memory that particularly stands out to me was a student who had come from New York just to study at the academy. He told me that he originally heard about it after climbing the Wudang mountain in China looking for a master to train him in the original Wudang Sword Style. He was able to find a master, but the man told him to come to Seattle, WA and study at Wudang academy. This demonstrates the authenticity to their teachings which draw direct lineage to the old masters of Chinese Kung Fu. I originally attended the academy several years ago, before my life became extremely busy and I moved to Chicago. I plan to move back to the area some day and Wudang academy is at the top of my list for activities to prioritize. If I have kids someday, I plan on taking them to the academy. A number of years ago, I was sent to Tangshan (a city in China) for a year and a half to train specifically in two things: Mandarin Chinese and Wu Shu martial arts. During the day I would go to school, and in the afternoon and night, I would train. When I think back to those times, I still remember what my shifu (teacher) was like, both his physical prowess - the speed, power, and grace of his movements - as well as the kindness and warmth he showed to others as a friend and mentor. I have been to numerous martial arts studios in America since. But I have never been reminded so much of my shifu and my training in China until I studied for a summer under Master Chang and Dr. Lu. When I see them demonstrate and apply their knowledge, it is blatantly obvious to me that they've gathered, learned, and mastered years of intense, authentic training from shifus like the one I remember. Perhaps more importantly, they do so while extending incredible character and sincerity to their students. I cannot help but give them my tremendous respect and admiration. There's not much else that can be said. They are undoubtedly capable as teachers to students of any level, from beginners to professional martial arts athletes, and are masters of the art in and of themselves. There are biographies and videos of them are online as well, so the curious reader can take a look if they're interested. But don't simply read, I earnestly encourage you to meet them and take a class in person. You can be new to everything, or a veteran, but you will not be disappointed. read more

This review is written by my wife, Pam: I live in Omaha and have been going to Seattle once a year to see Dr. Lu. I have been going there for about 5 years now. I suffered an AVM (stroke) 26 years ago which caused paralysis on my right side (arm and leg), a speech impediment and short term memory loss. The 2 latter conditions I have recovered completely from, and most of my right side mobility, leaving only my right foot still affected. Many times I was told by some doctors that I would make no progress past whatever limit I had reached at the time, and every time I proved them wrong. The main recovery happened during the first 2 years since the stroke, but I have never stopped making improvements, even if smaller ones now. When we lived in Seattle we had met Dr. Lu but never approached her to get help because I was content with getting physical therapy and exercising at the gym. But a few years ago, when I started feeling afraid of stepping down from the sidewalk to the parking lot, and physical therapy didn't help me, my husband suggested we should contact Dr. Lu. Dr. Lu is one of the persons always encouraging me to keep on fighting; always reaffirming my conviction that I will continue to improve. I feel very fortunate for having met her. She is a master of the Internal Martial arts, like Tai Chi, and also of the ancient art of Qi Gong, which she introduced me to. Qi Gong has been my weapon on this ongoing journey. It has helped me with other health issues related to my stroke as well, such as sleep apnea due to having some weaker muscles throughout my body. I get one personal session each year. Dr. Lu gives me exercises which focus on any problem I am having at the time. Then I practice those exercises at home throughout that year until my next visit. Two years ago, I received an unexpected and serious health diagnosis. My best hope at the time was that chemotherapy would work well enough to prepare me for a life-saving surgery. Close friends recommended Qigong to me as complementary therapy, and specifically referred me to Dr. Mei-Hui Lu at the International Wudang Internal Martial Arts Academy. After consulting with Dr. Lu and discussing my health situation, I joined her weekly Qigong remote sessions. Meditation and exercises became a part of my routine, and these helped optimize my chemo treatment and ability to withstand side effects. Ultimately I was able to receive two surgeries, and Qigong further helped aid in my recovery from these procedures. Since then, Qigong has become part of my everyday perspective--not just in terms of maintaining health and managing continued cancer treatment, but also with regard to balancing family, work, and creative pursuits, and cultivating appreciation of life. When I first moved to Seattle, I knew I needed to find a way to continue studying internal Chinese martial arts. After researching and visiting a few different schools, it became obvious that the International Wudang Internal Martial Art Academy was where I needed to be. Anyone who knows me knows I can pretty much never stop talking about how much I love this place. The bagua and qigong classes at the wudang academy are always a highlight of any week. It is such a privilege to be welcomed into such a serene space by the gracious masters who challenge us to clear our minds and strengthen our bodies and "practice hard, every day." I am consistently inspired by the philosophy of internal martial arts, encouraging us to train a blend of both softness and hardness, effective no matter how young, old, small, or large one we are. As someone with chronic back problems and titanium rods in my spine, I have never felt quite as physically strong and confident before as I have after studying here for just over a year. Progress here is a life-long endeavor that never ends, but has real tangible results all along the way. I also have immense appreciation for the culture of the school centering around humility and "family." Dr. Lu and Master Chang are unfathomably talented instructors, yet don't take themselves too seriously and succeed in balancing disciplined instruction with great fun and often hilarity. Finding a great martial arts school can be a challenge, especially for internal martial arts like Ba Gua, Tai Chi, and Xingyi...heck, most places probably haven't even heard of the last one. This school is simply amazing & Seattle-ites are lucky to have access to it! The teachers, Chang Laoshi and Lu Laoshi are dedicated monks, committed to their arts, and to providing great instruction and atmosphere for learning, but also kind and wonderful people. That's really the most important part of any school- great teachers! The students I've trained with these past years are all cool as well. This school teaches actual applications of martial techniques (my favorite), as well as forms, excercises and health benefits (also great), with a balanced set of classes for all ages. If you are looking to improve your skill, to better your health, to compete in tournaments, or even to learn about Chinese medicine and Yin Yang theory, this school has great classes. Personally, I love to train just for the sake of the art and it's been great learning from such an authentic pedigree of masters, while still having fun doing so! I've been at this school for about 7 years now. As someone who has seen numerous demonstrations from different taiji (taichi) and gongfu (kung fu) instructors, I can vouch that the masters at this school are the real deal. Master Chang and Master Lu are part of an old lineage that belongs to the original creator or tai chi. I found the Wudang Academy after intensive online research to find an authentic martial arts school with true masters as teachers, rather than the belt factories and franchise copies many schools have become. The laoshis (teachers) are fantastic and are at the peak of their arts. I have been a student there for over a year. They not only teach the movements themselves, but also the practical application of each movement, as well as the physical and mental health benefits. They return annually to China to refresh their own skills with their masters. You will not find a better martial arts school than this! If you are looking for a nurturing environment to learn Internal Martial Arts, i highly recommend this school. The techniques taught here are authentic, powerful, and challenging. The teachers are also highly skilled in the martial arts and communicating their knowledge. Before i started at this school i had never done martial arts before. So i was hesitant to jump into it. I thought that i would be embarrassingly bad or would feel ostracized for being new. I was completely wrong. It was so easy to start classes. I felt welcomed as soon as i walked into the school's door. The teachers and the students are beautiful people and are great at creating an inclusive community. The techniques taught (Bagua, Tai chi, Xingyi, Qigong, Wudang Sword, and Sanda) run the gamut of what you might want from a martial arts school. From cultivation for longevity to combative styles for self defense there is something for everyone. Perhaps one of the greatest qualities is the Lao shi's attention to the fighting art and real life application. If taught a technique you will know why it was taught and how to make it effective. No fluff. The fighting technique is central to the curriculum and philosophy here. If I still lived in Seattle, I would train here everyday. I started boxing 2 years ago until I endured several minor concussions that encouraged me to seek out other fighting techniques. After searching for several months, I was recommended by a friend to visit this gym. He wanted me to experience something other than the relentless training regime that boxing demanded if you wanted to be respectable. I was hesitant at first. I felt boxing was more practical with its intensive cardio and strikes. However, after attending a few session at WuDang, I began understanding the sophistication of Chinese martial arts. Training under Master Chang and Master Lu, I learned practical self-defense techniques, but more importantly, I learned composure during a fight. If you're self motivated and tenacious, training under these Masters will change the way you fight and how you approach obstacles in life. The martial arts they teach is more than techniques to put down an opponent but also encompasses the greater WuDang philosophy of spirituality and morality. If you want, you can train here only for combat but you would miss out on a lot of the intricacies that elevated Chinese Martial Arts onto the international scene. That said, this is not your typical "sweat box" gym. In general, the students are not training to look ripped or preparing for a fight. Do not expect to get in shape by merely attending classes. It is not the goal of this gym to help you lose body fat, get fit or feel tough. This gym is about teaching you martial art forms that protect you and instilling discipline that succeed not only in fights but also in life. Self motivation is key to staying in shape and you are expected to practice outside of the gym. For the serious fighters, there are sparring classes and general fitness courses. However, be prepared to spar fellow students that are less experienced as yourself OR go head to head with the Masters that tear you apart. While they hold back and transition between being your coach and opponent, they also firmly believe that you will not learn anything if they fight you, casually. I strongly encourage you to visit the gym's website to better understand the backgrounds of the Masters and their martial lineage. Stick with this gym. You will not regret it. I used to be a bboy (break dancer) but after multiple surgeries I had to call it quits. The physical therapy I was doing (Postural Restoration Institute) had quite a few techniques I thought were unique to the practice, but turned out to be only a small component of internal martial arts in general. I tried taiji at another school in Redmond, which was good, but overall the Wudang Academy has more variety and I found myself drawn into the friendly community of its fellow students I've started going August 2015 about 3-4 times a week, taking baguazhang, qigong and taijiquan, and practice daily in addition to it. They offer more detailed instruction than any martial arts school I've ever been to so you can remember precisely for your individual practice time, and always instruct you at your current skill level. The classes have both group and individual practice every time, and there isn't a class that goes by without each person getting detailed instruction. If you still need more help, the instructors will also help you after class no questions asked. A model of how to teach and care for your students. They also offer an annual retreat which I went to last year and it was a blast. If you're looking for community and like martial arts, you could find it here. In fact, I'm afraid to even switch jobs at this point because I don't want to leave Seattle and this school! Lastly I would say that martial arts aside, the mental and physical practices taught here are centuries old and come from a rich tradition of Chinese medicine, Daoism, acupuncture and an assortment of others. To try to keep this review concise is almost as challenging as every class I've attended at the International Wudang Internal Martial Art academy, as I can't pay enough compliments and respect to them. Being new to martial arts, I sought them out after reading Yelp reviews, looking for physical and spiritual enrichment (and maybe one day, enlightment). Attending their complimentary session was enough to convince me to enroll into their monthly program, where I have the opportunity to train 10+ hours a week in programs as varied as Taijii, Bagua, Qigong, Sanda, Tuishou, and Sparring Swords. Chang and Lu laoshi are very complementary in how they provide feedback and work together. As someone who's often gotten a lot of acknowlegments and used that as an excuse to be egoistic, being in their presence brought out the humility that I thought I lacked and made me explore Daoist philosophies, which I feel are natural extensions to their teachings. As another reviewer has mentioned, this is not a school to work on your six pack or your high flying 360 degree kick, but if your objective is self defense, physical and spitual health, then I can't think of a better place. I can't close out this review without mentioning the student body. I can't count the number of students who have gone out of their way to help me, being the inexperienced and gauche newb. This martial arts school is not your typical, everyday school that hands out colored belts because you paid a monthly fee. They are also not going to teach you something you may see a group of people doing in the park. Instead, they are going to teach you priceless skills that will make your body healthier and stronger, both internally and externally, while also allowing you to use the practical applications as a self defense. Due to my 6 year old son's severe asthma, I was trying to find another alternative to his extensive amounts of medication. I also wanted him to learn how he could defend himself as he was constantly being bullied due to his small stature. Since he started 9 months ago, we are amazed as to how strong he has gotten both internally and externally. In fact, he has not had the need to take any of his prior medication since he started and is happier that he can now do other activities he couldn't do in the past. A drastic change from taking multiple medications daily to not needing them at all, so my wife and I could not be happier. In relation to martial arts, I have practiced Karate, Aikido, Kendo, Yang Style Tai Chi, and have even taught Wing Chun for the past 5 years to many people. After watching and practicing with both Chang and Lu Laoshi, I can honestly say they are true martial artists, whose understanding and application of the art is unparalleled to anyone else that I have come across. They continue to expand their knowledge and understanding to not only better themselves, but also their students. I truly believe that all of my son's improvements were possible due to the extensive patience and skills of both Chang and Lu Laoshi. I also appreciate their willingness to listen and understand my concerns as a parent and as a student. We always feel blessed to have found this school and what it has done for us. There are many wonderful things I can say about Wudang after 3 years of instruction there, but what seems most important to highlight about the school is the personal enrichment that I have found from the school's internal martial arts training. There are many Martial Arts schools in the area that I am sure can promise to teach self-defense, pretty forms, and impressive stunts, all of which might be worthwhile, but I doubt any can offer the same level of mental, emotional, and spiritual growth in addition to those physical skills as offered by Lu Laoshi and Chang Laoshi. Both instructors are experts in multiple martial arts such as Taiji, Qigong, Sanda (Chinese Kickboxing), Xingyi, Wudang Sword, and more that they skillfully teach having learned from highly respected masters across the world and effortlessly demonstrate on a regular basis. When I first began taking classes I quickly discovered that learning to use the body and mind in new ways can be vulnerable, exposing new areas of weakness or clumsiness that normally would be well hidden. I still often feel that way after 3 years, but training with Wudang has been worth every shutter when I looked at myself in the mirror practicing the forms and every bruise from hitting myself in the shin with my staff and the frustration of realizing just how much work I still have ahead in order to reach my potential. That is because the Lasoshi's set an example for me for what it means to be dedicated and disciplined while at the same time, not taking yourself too seriously. In turn I rediscovered forgotten places of resiliency, strength, and determination as well as my playful spirit. Trusting your own strength, staying mentally balanced, and training your mind to not give up even when your body wants to quit seems to matter the most, at least to me, when entering the ring, a self defense situation, a competition, or just life. I do believe that Wudang has something truly meaningful to offer people at all levels of marital arts training or interest in physical and internal cultivation. I can speak for myself and many students I know who consistently return week after week for training that Wudang is a truly an life-enriching place to learn. read more

Can you picture a Chinese Kung Fu master with UW Ph. D in education? Can you image a school that offers authenticity, respect, variety, compassion, discipline, fun, and endless growth? I feel blessed to be trained by such teacher in such school. I had exposure to internal martial arts before and learned both Yang & Chen style Tai Chi. Also, I researched a few Tai Chi schools/teachers around. The fact I'm willing to start from scratch & only train here says a lot. All my needs are met here, and some more. And I'm not easily impressed. Wudang offers very high calibre instructions, makes it easy to progress and build a practice routine at home. Many Tai chi instructors withhold valuable feedback until you sign up for private classes. Not here. The teachers go out of their way to give the best personalized advice. They genuinely care about the students and take pride in their growth. Some students reported measurable health improvement. Truth is everyone feels better after a class here. The teachers practice diligently themselves and keep learning. They show incredible respect for their teachers and no ego. They're such honest, kind & uncompromising people, making the school a sanctuary for the students. When they demonstrate in public, their routine is exactly like in class. Nothing fancy or showy to advertise. They're a rare gem in modern society that spreads the spirit of traditional martial arts. So back to my own story. Previously I ran into some blocks in Tai Chi and Qigong, and they're addressed wonderfully here. My health & confidence soared in a short space of time. I went from 1 class a week to multiple classes in 3-4 different areas. I look forward to years of learning from these amazing masters. Update 8/7/2016: A few more months, I've forgotten life without Wudang. There's one unique aspect: School offers very flexible programs. Students can train rigorously or lightly, or vary the intensity from month to month. From what I've observed and learned from conversations, many students not only mature as martial artists, but also as people. In ancient times, Taoist monks practiced alchemy. I have been training at this school for about 2 1/2 years and can't speak highly enough of it. I had trained previously in another "external" martial art but was injured and stopped training altogether. After a long hiatus, I began looking for a school and a discipline that was a more holistic system, one that restores the body/mind/spirit connection. For me that meant an internal discipline like Tai Chi or Qigong and after a little research, this school stood out as the place to learn these and other forms of Chinese martial arts. I was not interested in a "calisthenics in the park" type of training and this school did not disappoint. I've been doing a huge research on martial arts schools in Seattle before I got lucky to find this academy. It's in china town what makes it convenient if you live in down town. Master Chung and Dr.Lu have dedication for their students. They are very attentive, clear and full of sense of humor. Even thou I'm a new student I feel absolutely lucky to be able to learn such techniques with their approach. Highly recommend to any level for healthy being and state of mind. read more
