I have explored lots of different martial arts gyms in the greater Seattle area, and lots of them have different things to offer. However, it was difficult to find traditional Chinese gungfu that is rooted in the culture and practice of Chinese martial arts that also teaches real, effective, full contact application. This is the place to do it! Lu Laoshi and Chang Laoshi are both incredibly knowledgeable, but also down to earth and humble. They really know their stuff, through the historical lineage and practice. There are many amazing non-Chinese instructors of the Chinese martial arts, but I personally appreciate that both head instructors are ethnically and culturally Chinese while also being attuned to western culture and the norms of western students. This is not a school with Japanese style belt progression, or a very hierarchical student culture. Both Instructor Lu and Instructor Chang expect students to think critically for themselves, and for the instruction to make sense because it works, not just because "they say so." If you approach it with an open mind, there is much to learn at this school, no matter your training goals. Chang Laoshi has many years fighting in the ring, testing his application skills in ring fighting, to complement his deep understanding of the traditional forms, and Lu Laoshi has a rich knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine in addition to her martial arts practice. Whether you want to learn internal martial arts for demonstration, cultivate qigong, learn about the culture and history of Chinese martial arts, or spar and compete in sanda full contact ring fighting, this is a place where you can do some or all of those things. There are many places in Seattle where you can learn traditional Chinese gungfu, and internal martial arts. There are also many places that will teach you full contact grappling and striking, for muay thai/BJJ/MMA etc. However, if you are trying to learn both of these dimensions of the martial arts and not just one or the other, this is in my opinion the best place in Seattle for it. You can learn forms, qigong, application, open hand, and weapons, all under one roof and with two deeply qualified instructors. There are places that are probably more "affordable" if you are just looking for the cheapest place to train and get a workout, but in this case, I think the expertise and thoroughness of instruction is more than justified, especially considering the generosity of both instructors when it comes to time and answering questions after official class hours.

The chronic pain in my knee completely resolved. If you want to live a long, happy, and healthy life this is the secret! They have many different classes/styles of martial arts that can be practiced, and the masters are amazing at helping you choose the best style to fit your goals. If I had more time I would study as many styles as possible. During my time there I practiced Baguzahang (Circular Boxing), Taijiquan (Tai Chi), and Qigong. A memory that particularly stands out to me was a student who had come from New York just to study at the academy. He told me that he originally heard about it after climbing the Wudang mountain in China looking for a master to train him in the original Wudang Sword Style. He was able to find a master, but the man told him to come to Seattle, WA and study at Wudang academy. This demonstrates the authenticity to their teachings which draw direct lineage to the old masters of Chinese Kung Fu. I originally attended the academy several years ago, before my life became extremely busy and I moved to Chicago. I plan to move back to the area some day and Wudang academy is at the top of my list for activities to prioritize. If I have kids someday, I plan on taking them to the academy. I hope that in the future I will be able to make time to attend again. If my review piques your interest, please attend, and learn more in person. I gave him all our info including the time and location of our event. He said he was going to reach out to me closer to the date and confirm the time. I ask if he needed a deposit to make things official to what he replied that "they only take cash the day of the event". Two weeks before my wedding, I received a call from David. We spoke briefly and confirm the time and location which was still exactly the same I had given him 5 months prior. I told him my coordinator was going to be available that day to coordinate how they would enter as well as to let her know they had arrived and gave him her number and name. David told me they had scheduled an event earlier that day and will be there around 3:45pm after taking several ferries to get to my wedding. I told him "please call my coordinator if you are running late, we can do something else while we wait for you guys, it's not that big of a deal if you are late, as long as you arrive". On my wedding day, I asked my coordinator to let me know when they arrive so that we all prepare. She called him and he was rude to her letting her know that he didn't know who she was and that no one ever confirm with him. My coordinator asked him if they were coming at all, to what he replied that he had called me a thousand times in the morning and since I didn't reply to him he consider that I changed my mind and they went all straight home. My coordinator tried to call him but it went straight to voicemail. I had to step out of my wedding to give him a call myself and see what was going on. David answered the phone. He said "I called you a thousand times and you never picked up" I said "that's interesting, I don't know who you called because I have not a single missed phone call from you and I saved his number on my phone". He said "I assumed you cancel the wedding so we all went home". I don't know what happened but since he told me they were going to have an earlier event, I kind of knew they were going to not make it because they were too tired. I wish that David would have been honest and honorable as they say they are to tell me that they couldn't make it to my wedding so I would have had the opportunity to hire someone else who did have the time for their performance for us. I am extremely disappointed and sad as much as all our guests were. Absolutely not recommend their service.

My experience here so far has been amazing. The instructors at this studio are so caring. They sincerely want to help you improve and they really focus on helping you achieve your goals. I originally came because I had a lot of stress accumulating and had no idea how to deal with it and it was becoming too much for me to handle. I will agree with the previous poster, saying that it's not like any other yoga I've done before. Maybe a little similar to Kundalini yoga, but still in it's own category. I think the major difference is that the yoga is actually ki-gong (chi-gong) based. So for people who aren't too familiar with different types of yoga, meditation, energy work, etc., will easily come to the conclusion that this is "not yoga." But most know that "yoga" means union of the body & mind, and that's exactly what Dahn Yoga teaches, and exactly what I've experienced. I think what I've benefited from most is the dynamic meditation techniques they teach. My understanding of ki-energy has grown tremendously and I am so much more aware of my body & how my mind can affect it. And because of that I have gained the tools & knowledge of how to deal & manage with my daily stress. Basically the things that drove me crazy in the past don't really affect me anymore. Or at least not as much as before. Dahn Yoga really gives you much more than just a physical work out, it's really focused on teaching the mind & body connection. For anyone who's interested in learning about how to self-heal yourself, I really recommend trying this place out. Once in awhile they will offer free trial classes throughout the month. They'll usually have the coupons you can print on their website. read more

I've tried a lot of different types of yoga, whether it be at the gym or studios. What I've experienced here at Dahn Yoga is incredible. The service and care you receive from the staff is great. I like how it's not strictly a place you do your workout and go home kind of place. Once you enter through the doors, it's like being in a different world. A stress FREE world. :) I really feel like I can forget all about my issues and just focus on me. Even though the class is just one hour, it's enough to get me going for the day or wind down from a hectic schedule. Depending on my schedule I'll either fit the class in early morning or evening. What I really enjoy about this type of Yoga is that it's not just about the physical exercise like most of the yoga's are since they've become so westernized. It's really about health and unity of the mind, body & spirit. They really teach you about how the mind & body work. The instructors are very knowledgeable and you can tell that they don't just speak it, but live the practice they teach. I've learned so much about my body here. When I realized how the stress was making my body so tense and how to release that stress, I became so much more flexible. I can touch my toes! I haven't been able to do that since school days. They take an Eastern approach to this style of yoga so they actually teach Tai-Chi here too. Which is a pretty cool class. I've never experienced "ki, qi, chi (or however you want to pronounce it) energy" the way I do here. It's so amazing how powerful your mind can be. Just to clarify this location opened recently so the post below I believe is outdated from an older location. Anyways, I can't say enough good things about this place since I've started. The atmostphere at other yoga studios I've been to are kind of cold & unfriendly. I really enjoy it here because there is such a community oriented atmosphere. The instructors really care about their students. You'll never leave without a hug! The instructors are so sweet :) They constantly have met with me since I've started to keep checking my progress and if I have any questions. I've never gotten this kind of one on one care in other studios before. This yoga style is really different from other yogas on the market in that they infuse an eastern style of ki-gong (qi-gong) into the pracetice. Which is cool because I think they teach more of the principles of mind & body rather other yogas I've done are more geared to just the exercise. I also must say I LOVE the meditation (Brain Wave Vibration) here. It's so different and took me a little getting used to at first, but it's helped me reduce my stress dramatically. I feel so much looser and lighter after class and I really enjoy it. I'm noticing that I'm much more flexible than I was before & thanks to the intestinal work they teach, I've lost 2 inches off my waist! :D They're offering free classes with the grand opening so I totally recommend anyone to check it out. Plus they are offering a 20% discount as a grand opening event as well. But lucky me, I'm still a student (grad student) and they give a 30% discount for students! Freaking awesome! read more

I sincerely love this studio. The instructors are caring and genuinely interested in your improvement. The setting is comfortable, and you don't feel like a sore thumb when you can't do something right. The way they design the classes make you want to try more and not feel embarrassed for not doing something right. (Which is how I felt at another yoga studio). It's clean, well taken care of, and has been in Seattle for 10 years, or so I hear. I've seen a great deal of improvement in my body and I am so much more flexible and I don't feel as groggy at work like I normally would. It's truly worth a try. Just an update: I know it's been a couple weeks since I last posted, but just wanted to share my experience from this weekend. I feel so much lighter after class. Challenging yet relaxing! Often have to take muscle relaxation pills due to my stressful work and heavy workouts routines, I find this unique mind-body-energy profoundly help me become aware of my current state and condition of my mind and body. Now as I am more aware of how I have not been so good or attentive to my own inner needs, most of the time I just did not want to feel my feeling of emptiness or uncomfortable feelings when my situations are not happy or positive. Now I am taking actions and making a lot of efforts to change myself so I can feel better inside instead of just trying to find an entertainments through games and drinking. I've tried many different types of yoga, and this is by far the best for my body, energy, & spirit. I never knew that yoga was more than just stretching, relaxing, & working out. To reap the benefits of body & brain yoga, you must come with an open heart and mind. The various stretching and tapping routines focus on preparing oneself to meditate. With all the noise in this world & our minds racing 24/7, body & brain has helped me to become centered for the first time in my life. Since coming to this center I have stopped taking my anxiety medication and feel calmer than I have ever felt in my adult life. Everyone at the center is kind & full of joy. I've been coming to Body&Brain Yoga Center in Wedgwood since Oct 2019. The instructors as well as other members at this center are cheerful and welcoming. They offer a variety of classes such as Body and Brain Yoga, Energy Movement , Digestive Health, and Tai Chi. I particularly like the stretching exercises and Tai Chi. I've noticed great improvement in my flexibility and balance. Body and Brain Yoga has become my daily exercise routine. If you get a regular unlimited membership and attend at least 3 or more classes per week, as I did, then the cost/benefit ratio is excellent. I highly recommend it. read more

I've been participating in Yoga and Tai Chi classes here for almost a year. My flexibility and balance are so improved! You're laying on the ground and can see the dust and if you have allergies they'll immediately be triggered. The 'instructor' was horrible and the website falsely advertises hot rooms- it was purposefully left cold to accommodate the teacher. I've taken yin in multiple cities and this was not even close. This was yin for preschool kids. Yin here was a frog pose, child's pose, and a bridge. Additionally the sound bath is anything but... It's like they bought some bowls on Amazon and watched a YouTube. It was so bad and ear piercing that you leave you with ringing ears. Oh and to top it off the women here with the fake namaste attitudes are horribly rude. Suffice to say- don't waste your time or go here searching for a proper yoga studio or you too will experience the Walmart of yoga being culturally appropriated by a basic MAHA group.

You know when you are just craving something and you finally get exactly what you needed? That was my massage... I hadn't been able to find a good massage locally in so long. I had two terrible massages by 2 different therapists at a nearby chiro, and I was desperate for something good. Other than the excellent massage, I appreciate the important nuance that she did not talk to me and let me enjoy. (Therapists will often try to talk to you which is the absolute worst when you're also face-down in a pillow that's smushing on your face.) The temp was perfect, she checked in at the beginning, and then let me enjoy my bliss. She kept it simple, professional, and wonderful. A+

I was attracted by their focus on accessibility and diversity, and I found them to be true to this. I did the 2 week pass, which I would highly recommend to anyone wanting to check them out. All of the classes I joined were great. The instructors are clearly knowledgeable. I loved that they gave clear guidance around form and shared the intention behind certain elements of the practice. The ladies' room is clean and has lots of cubby space. There are also a couple showers, which is great! My only complaint is that the schedule is a bit limited compared to what I'm used to. If you're sensitive to smell, I recommend that you aim for the first class of the day. After that, it does smell a bit musty (I mean, it is hot yoga). And make sure you bring your own clean towel or wipes for after class. They do have cleaning solution for you to use. I have gone to a variety of hot yoga studios outside of Washington. This one places their emphasis on a high quality practice where all can feel welcome and I think they deliver that well.

Thankfully, I look forward to a few constants: Nicole's brilliant sound baths, Chloe's evocative, primal Saturday am power flows, Alicia's "happy Monday, now let's get this party started" 6:15am thoughtfully curated flows (BEST way to start the work week), newcomer Suki's entrancing Sunday meditations, Teigh's loving Reiki offering, and Sarah Lakey's (who is EVERYTHING good in anatomy and movement progression) slow flow. This is my love letter to a place where, as soon as I settle in/ onto my mat, I feel like I'm home. The community is icing: I hope you come experience for yourself. It's very spacious inside - there are plenty of reformers with lots of room between. They also have a shower and lockers. The workout was amazing - kind of a blend of Pilates and flow yoga. Everyone in the class was friendly and nice, and there was a good mix of experience levels. The instructor - Jeremy - made it fun and challenging while offering up good corrections. There are also video screens that show the exercises with countdowns, which I loved. I'm excited to take the other class formats. It's ideal that they have classes at lunchtime - it's a great way to de-stress and reset for the rest of the work day. Can't wait to be back!

While the class is a ton of fun, he doesn't neglect the technical aspects of yoga, and wants to make sure everyone is getting what they want from the class. So in addition to helping me become healthier on a physical level (flexibility, strength), Dylan likes to focus on the breath, which really helps relax the mind, and get rid of those stresses I seem to pick up on a day to day basis. Definitely recommend the class. I used to go from Queen Anne (a bit of a hike, so you know it's worth it) but now that I live in Fremont, it's just around the corner!)

Taj Yoga is an incredible studio and founder and teacher Theresa Elliot is a master of her craft and is always evolving and growing, sharing her enthusiasm and smart, safe movement practices in exciting ways without being snooty or woo-woo. Her classes are always fun and a good workout and I've learned immensely from her. The space is beautiful too with high ceilings, great light and solid maple floors. I also regularly attend Dylan Noebels early morning yoga classes here and have reviewed him independently under A-1 Yoga.
