I was able to experience my first set of headshots with XYZ Portraits with the help of Groupon. She contacted me once she had a slot open and verified my voucher. The place is located in the city near Herald Square so VERY convenient via MTA transportation. My shoot was quick and efficient. I appreciated that I was asked what the purpose of the photos were for so that we were both on the same page! She took some test shots to get the lighting right and guided me very nicely through the shoot. Don't worry, you will be able to see what your shots look like through out the shoot. Just when you think everything is going wrong, Yan makes everything right. I was notified that I needed a headshot to go with my application with less than a week's notice. Finding XYZ on Groupon, I called immediately to make an appointment. Yan was not only able to fit me into her schedule but she promised to get my images retouched within 3 days. I was expecting a response some time in the afternoon considering the short amount of time she had to work with but I received an e-mail first thing in the morning! THANK YOU, YAN! In regards to the photoshoot, it was my first time getting a professional headshot done so I have nothing to compare this experience to but I couldn't have asked for more. You start the session with trial shots at three different angles (your front and sides) and the photographer will show you the images on her camera. Pick your angle and she would continue to take more shots until you're satisfied. I really appreciate the fact that I got to see the images as we went on so I knew what was really going on behind the lenses. The girl who took my photos (sorry, I couldn't spell her name) was a total sweetheart. She was extremely patient and she offered multiple suggestions throughout the session. Who would've known that clipping your hair behind the ears would make such a huge difference? She certainly did! XYZ Fashion Photography (also known as XYZ Impression) is great! I work for an entertainment company and wanted a corporate headshot which was a little more fun than what most headshots studios do (more focus on aesthetics... Less JC Penny Portrait styling) . Yan was absolutely perfect! We were able to get some serious "corporate" shots that look like they came from a traditional studio and some which were a bit more fun yet still professional as well. If you are shopping for headshots I recommend calling this studio for prices as well. I'm not going to post my price since they change over time, but can say that she was incredibly affordable and doesn't charge you an arm and a leg for extra retouched photos beyond what is included in the packages. I came to Yan inquiring about the possibility of doing a shoot where I took both professional (i.e. headshots for work) and creative (i.e. headshots for use with creative pieces and social media). I submitted some examples of the type of creative headshot I wanted to end the shoot with, and was pleasantly surprised by how receptive Yan was to fulfilling my vision for the shoot! As a creative person, I know that it is often difficult to defer creative control to someone else, but Yan is truly accommodating and spectacular, and knew exactly how to deliver the results I wanted! After the shoot was complete, I had tons of great photos to choose from and made my selections for retouching. Within a couple days, the retouched photos were emailed to me and I am immensely satisfied with them and the entire experience! I will absolutely be going back to Yan when I need photos in the future! As a photographer, Yan knows how to give constructive direction on posing, and since I am infrequently in front of the camera, that direction made all the difference! As someone who does not have many photos of himself and who is quite self-conscious, I am very hard to please when it comes to photos of myself, but Yan gave me photos that I am proud to use and really ecstatic about! Yan put me at ease and was very professional. During the session, she showed me the images in the camera to get my feedback. After telling her which pose I liked better, she then started taking pictures in that pose. Because I was somewhat tense and having difficulty appearing relaxed, she found a creative solution by telling me to smile and then catching me in the middle of it. This proved really effective. At the end, she made sure I had a few that I liked before she ended the session. I used a groupon for the session and was completely satisfied. I was in a bit of a hurry as I had just found a position and found out I needed to provide professional headshots for a company website. I had to sift through various photographers, but was on a budget. I finally found Yan and was glad I contacted her! Although the day of the photo session, some things went wrong personally on my end (due to extreme weather, rain, etc.), but Yan still managed to help me relax. I was worried that the photos would turn out terribly as my hair and makeup became a little ruined in the rain. But Yan provided thorough instructions on how to pose, smile naturally and relax so that the photos would still come out well. In the end, I was shocked that she managed to salvage my "bad day" and helped me look my best given the circumstances! This photographer has serious issues. It is a total waste of time. First of all, neither the studio nor the photographer herself is professional. The studio lacks the basic light fixtures to be called a studio (there was only one light source!!!---you will never get the bright dots in your pupils as in any professional headshot). The photo shooting was not efficient at all, because photographer was sluggish the whole time. The photographer asked me to leave without showing the photos to me on a computer screen, even after I emphasized the concerns of the quality of the shots. Indeed, the shots came out pretty bad, not better than a $5 CVS ID photo. The last hope was the retouch service in the package, which turned out to be the last straw. Neither I or my family can tell those photos were mine!!! I wrote to the photographer and requested a full refund. But she said "Unfortunately, we cannot issue a refund, since we have taken the time photograph and retouch". What about the time, energy and makeup I wasted???? read more
