Tijuana Tuesday is a busy night to be here, but it's a fun atmosphere with people trying to scarf down huge plates of nachos and burritos stuffed with salsa. The beers are cheap, the Bloody Mary's may kill you (in a good way - honest!) and while the food isn't going to be the most exciting thing you eat all week (for me, the prawn tacos lacked seasoning and could have used a good dose of lime, chilli and coriander) but it's fun, casual and will mean you can buy an extra round of drinks and stick around to make eyes at the hot guys and girls sitting on the nearby tables. read more

The first time I came to Yellow Bird was actually a little bit of an odd occasion, I stopped in for breakfast after quite a big night out. Feeling rather peckish after quite a few rounds of beers I ordered the Ave Amarilla; Corn fritters stacked with guacamole, salsa, sour cream, rocket and a poached egg. That definitely hit the spot, we also couldn't pass up ordering the cleverly named Green Eggs and Ham. Not knowing exactly what would be presented we were pleasantly surprised when presented with a huge plate of scrambled eggs with house-made pesto, ham and freshly shaved Grana Padano on sour dough. Heaven! Yellow Bird is also great for dinner and drinks, on Tuesday nights they have $5 Corona's for their Mexican themed night Tijuana Tuesday's. Is it just another cafe down Chapel St that tries to be urban and hipster? Yes, it's nothing unusual but maybe, with the competition that surrounds, it gets intimidated and doesn't get the same result. I have some of my favourite cafes down this street where on occasions it's hard to get a seat and I suppose that's always a good sign. Yellowbird is never completely full and it is nice as a back up but it just doesn't make my top 5. Sadly, it lacks the spark of some of its competitors where I've had some bad customer service incidents there as well as an upset tummy from the somewhat greasy burger I had. I like my cafe food to be fresh and it's more of a pub-style menu there, which does appeal to some. Not so much me. The set up there is cool with its punk rock style (music up loud) and funky paintings on the wall where it does turn into a little drinking hole at night. I'm yet to go there at night and maybe it's more suited to a nightcap? It's hard in such an over-populated cafe area to stand out where Yellowbird hasn't given me enough yet to really go "rock'n'roll" wild over. read more

An eclectic little eatery/ bar in the grungier side of Chapel Street, just walking past Yellow Bird is enough to make you take a second look. First, because of the hip but diverse crowd that flock here and second because the food smells so good. With an interior dressed with whimsical bird cages, mis-matched retro furniture and a colourful vintage vibe, it's one of those places that you'll just want to lomograph. The outdoor area is also a good spot to people-watch. Friends of mine can't stop talking about the breakfast burritos and modern-australian take on mexican food. That said, I decided to conquer the Chilli Burger - a spicy ground beef patty, jalapenos, tasty cheese, red onion, tomato, bacon, rocket, chutney and a very generous side of fries. My partner had the fish and chips done in a White Rabbit ale beer batter, served with salad, chips and homemade tartare sauce - which he absolutely devoured. Both mains were simply delish! I love you at lunchtime, when you have a range of latino-eque dishes on your menu and TWO types of burger. As soon as you step in to Yellow Bird there's a distraction of kitschy art, cafeteria tables and chairs and a shrine above the bar to the yellow bird. As far as popularity goes, it seems to get pretty busy here, so along with the loud music and louder chatter it can be kind of hard to have a conversation. Although if you are coming for the soul purpose of getting wasted then you probably don't care about that. But onto the food: The bean & coriander quesadilla w/ jalapeños, salsa, sour cream & avocado was agreeably tasty and well made. The cheeseburger w/ jalapeños and tomato relish on a brioche bun was so-so, not great. It was too greasy but the brioche bun was a nice touch and it's saving grace. The accompanying fries were dismal and were like a bad order of McDonald's chips. A positive note was the Tobasco and hot chilli bottles scattered on all the tables. I'm hot sauce obsessed so it was a pleasant find on the table. Now the worst part was the service here is appalling! Rude, oblivious, unobservant and bad-mannered were each and every staff member I encountered. Looking over the menu was hard, as the lighting was so dim. Once the waitress had come to ask what we'd like, we had literally uttered the last word of our food order before she ran off like speedy Gonzales not giving us the chance to order drinks. It was then a looooong while before she came back in our vicinity again. Now comes the part where we want to leave but there's a million people at the bar and no staff in sight. My friend and I stand around for a while (probably 15 actual minutes) before we finally have to become bounty hunters and locate one sole waitress to pay so we can get the hell out of here. Overall we were left underwhelmed with this lacklustre "cafe" which is more like a seedy Tijuana bar that most people would avoid. read more

Last time I visited there, it was the Easter holiday and a Saturday but the cafe was still not that busy. That didn't stop staff to be grumpy though. Great atmosphere, food and prices (in that order). Tijuana Tuesdays are good, but there is some pretty solid fare on the other nights as well. My favourites are the Yellow Bird chilli burger and the roast pumpkin and green bean salad. The veggie burger is also ok, though a bit heavy so don't get it if you're hankering for something healthy. As far as drinks go, if you like it hot definitely try the spicy bloody Mary - one of the best in the city, though be prepared for it to dissolve your stomach lining. read more

Something of a Windsor institution Yellow Bird attracts a hipster crowd with its easygoing vibe, funky music (and Aussie band connections), quirky decor and fab happy hour-style Tijuana Tuesday - that's cheap Mexican food and drink to you and me. Grab a seat at a table or the bar inside (if you can hear each other over the din, god I sound old) or head outside to the sprawling enclosed pavement space, complete with heaters for those inclement Melbourne nights. Expect huge sharing-size serves of tacos, quesidillas, enchilladas and burritos, which come with differing combinations of spiced and chargilled chicken strips, chilli beef, beans, melted cheese, guacamole, homemade salsa and sour cream, not to mention nacho mountains studded with fat slices of punchy green chilies. Then there is the extravaganza that is the Mexican super bowl: layers of arroz, frijole beans, guacamole, salsa, shredded lettuce, sour cream and coriander (for a mere $13 / $15 with spicy mince beef. The rest of the week the kitchen churns out sturdy standards for breakfast, lunch and dinner - fish and chips done in a White Rabbit ale beer batter, served with salad, chips and homemade tartare sauce, and gourmet smokey kransky hotdogs topped with caramelised onion, cheese, tomato, rocket, mustard and tomato sauce. Then there are run-of-the-mill snacks - like bruschetta, wedges, fries and toasties - but you can still indulge in the nachos. The latest bottled beer offering from a long list (including Quilmes, Peroni, Asahi and Pacifico, and not to mention a handful of ciders) is Rosita - a bottle fermented, pale/blonde style. Order it for the gorgeous label alone, or quench your thirst on Tuesdays with $5 Coronas and cheapy cocktails - passionfruit, lychee and mango margaritas, sangria and even a 80s throwback tequilla sunrise. Now this place was a very pleasant surprise when looking for a good breakfast place on Chapel Street. The atmosphere is very cool both ambiance and the physical design. Has that artsy vibe but doesn't accomplish it in a dirty or disorganized manner. The food and coffee were big winners. I ordered the Death Benedict which was truly "killer". Instead of using english muffins they went with deep fried hashbrowns (ala mcdonalds type) covered in copious amounts of bacon with poached eggs and hollandaise. In the past I had been conditioned by many a café that I would receive some form of bread with a Benedict. I was wrong as I did not read the fine print or lack thereof. Don't get me wrong though, where they lack in bread they make up with food that is definitely better than most, the atmosphere is great, there are little humorous details all over the place and the service is fantastic. I don't know how to convey how much I love this place. The breakfast tacos were life changing. The staff were relaxed and casual, but were right there when you needed them. The food was quick to arrive and plenty of condiments on the table. The coffee was excellent. My boyfriend had the breakfast burrito and loved it. Finding a true all-day breakfast is awesome too. Cause being super hung over, and needing breakfast at 1pm before going to my 2 year-old nephew's birthday, it was the cure of all my ailments! Definitely a winner. read more

Can't speak for the food as I was only there for drinks, but even so this place gets high marks. There is a Mexican theme that reminds me of funky bars in Tucson and the walls are plastered with posters from indie and punk shows, The music was great and the staff was friendly and competent. In addition to a great selection of bottled Mexican beer and Melbourne Bitter long necks, they also made some decent cocktails like a dark and stormy. Prices are pretty good for a popular Chapel Street bar. I will have to go back and try the food. read more

Popped in for lunch and ordered the veggie burger (which comes with a side of fries) and a flat white. The veggie burger appeared as a towering mountain with a hill of fries on the side, there is no going hungry in this place. The veggie burger was delicious with a sweet chilli marinade on the outside of the parties, and the fries were clearly not all eaten as their sheer number was too much for me (but they were tasty). My coffee was made to my liking nice and smooth, not too bitter and hot enough, but as it was a flat white could have stood to have a little less foam. Customer service was adequate, I was acknowledged and served quickly and my food brought out quickly. All in All, I definitely recommend this place. I've eaten here a couple of times only because I like to give the benefit of the doubt! On my first visit, I ordered the Fisherman's Basket as it included beer battered 'flathead fillets'. Being a fisherman's daughter, I grew up eating flathead fillets at least once a week. I was very disappointed when the dish came out with...FISH FINGERS!!!! As in those ones you may have eaten at other kids parties when you were 7 years old! The place was flat out at the time and I was in a hurry, so I decided to let it slide. Not to mention the staff seemed to move at a glacial pace with the personality of a dirty dish rag. So in my infinite wisdom, I give Yellow Bird another shot and once again order the Fisherman's Basket. More out of curiosity to see if the chef actually knows what a flathead fillet is. Strike two! It comes out with hake fillet instead of flathead! (Just to clarify, hake sells for around $9.00 a kg and flathead for around $37.00 a kg) I justifiably felt ripped off. Unfortunately for Yellow Bird they struck someone on Chapel Street who actually knows what a flathead fillet should look and taste like! Do not order the 'Fishermans Basket'. read more
