Sometimes food and coffee options are limited in these small towns along M22, but Yellow Dog is an awesome little shop! They make fresh baked sweets, frittatas, and pre-made sandwiches, along with a great selection of espresso drinks. The spinach, roasted red pepper, and feta frittata was delicious and the plum upside cake was moist and tart. They have seating inside with local art for sale on the walls and the little garden area outside is even cuter. There's always new art pieces out there to notice. My only complaint is that they aren't open every day of the week, but I understand Mon-Wed is probably more difficult to get the same amount of business in the area. read more

I am OBSESSED with this place. Though pictures don't capture the quint well made pastries they did a good job with presentation and quality of food. Though the flavored lattes were lacking in strength of flavor the plain dark roast coffee was perfect! The pastries were just so beautiful. Love this place! I wish every town had a friendly local cafe like this. Fresh locally sourced ingredients, a creative menu, local papers on the counter, comfy seating inside and outside... it's the perfect place to spend a morning with friends, or a good book! Last time I went I got the vegan hummus sandwich and a lavender almond milk latte. Delicious :) Please note: service can be a little slow here sometimes, but that's because everything is fresh and they pay attention to details. I was so happy to stumble on this place on the way to a hike. There are literally no coffee places in the area that I could see and then this gem happened. A cute little shop that is decorated well, cozy, welcoming, friendly, and also offers Starbucks type coffee offerings, along with some yummy homemade eats to choose from. I opted for an iced americano and got a quiche wedge with cold lentil salad. My wife chose a berry scone. Both of us were pretty pleased with the eats as well as the atmosphere. It's 11am Saturday morning on memorial day weekend, you are visiting some amazing lake side communities in Northern Michigan, your hotel has something pretending to be coffee, and you can't find a coffee shop anywhere. What do you get? A VERY GRUMPY HUSBAND!!! Thank goodness for Yellow Dog Cafe in the cute lakeside community of Onekama, and it's sweet owner Bonnie - who also has several very friendly young adults helping her out. Everything in Bonnie's quint shop is homemade. The scones were huge and so incredibly tasty! My husband had a slice of the veggie quiche with a side of lentil salad. I'm not the biggest lentil fan, but the salad was well done and had me discussing how I should be giving lentils more room in my life! We ordered our items to go, but we decided that the interior was so cute that we had our breakfast in the shop. It was nice to do some people watching. Bonnie has a lot of fans that were excited to see her again. I love small close knit communities. Kudos to owner Bonnie for creating this beautiful cafe, a long overdue complement to Onekama's downtown. Whether you are heading here for coffee and a homemade muffin or scone, sandwich or salad for lunch, or cheese plate to take to a picnic, this place has you covered, at reasonable prices no less. We really enjoyed the turkey sandwich with pea shoots and green goddess spread, the granola with yogurt, and the fresh baked goods. All ingredients tasted fresh and of a high quality. For less than $20, we were able to get 2 coffees, the granola/yogurt bowl, a sandwich, and 2 baked goods. A darn good deal, and so much more joyful than a corporate coffee mill like St*rb*cks.. The inside space is bright and pleasant to sit in, although there are also some nice outside tables, too. No detail has been overlooked, down to the Mrs. Meyer's soap in the bathroom. The cafe will stay open year round, and is open every day each week except Tuesdays. I hope that the community will continue to embrace this place! read more

We came in for breakfast, on a Saturday and had to go back on Sunday for a second stop the next day. Everything we tried was great. Staying in Onekama, craving a good cup of coffee. Thankfully, I found Yellow Dog Cafe and a place that actually knows great ingredients. They carry Higher Grounds from Traverse City - so good! I was also happy to see Raclette cheese, quinoa salad, flatbread sandwiches...I bought an apricot scone (made in-house.) The owner was talking to a local farmer who was delivering heirloom tomatoes. I know it is a small town, and I'm spoiled by good food at home, but it was refreshing that this place "gets it." read more

Don't come to this coffee shop if you aren't a local. We have a cottage up here and are in town often. My family was very excited to see that there was a local coffee shop around but from the second we walked into the door we immediately felt unwelcome. There is hardly any seating, they are not helpful if you aren't sure what you want and are very short with you. Very disappointed. read more
