Lakeside breakfast with bacon and sourdough toast
    Bridget K.

I came up to Big Bear lake to stay with a friend and her dad recommended this place. We were a group of four and shared biscuits and gravy, a cinnamon roll, bacon, eggs, hash browns, a chocolate chip pancake, the breakfast burrito with bacon and toast. The breakfast burrito looked the best out of the things we tried. The biscuits and gravy were good! The bacon was way too over cooked and burnt. The eggs were cooked really well and the sourdough toast was great! The chocolate chip pancake was very dense and huge! One was definitely big enough to share! The cinnamon roll was soft and had a good flavor. It was clear that this is a favorite for the locals. The wait staff knew everyone who walked through the door, which was very sweet to see!

The cafe is right across the street from Bear Lake. Although your patio view may be obstructed by parked cars. The service was very friendly and accommodating. The menu had many options to choose from. But, unfortunately none of the flavors really stuck out.

My new favorite breakfast spot up north! Delicious food and fast service! The two girls working were so sweet and funny. My favorite is the loaded hash brown scramble - a little bit of everything! I'll definitely be back.

Great food! Recommend the gravy! Stop by Lakeside for breakfast next time you're in town!

The restaurant is small but cozy; it seems to be a neighborhood staple. I love how well the locals and servers knew each other; everyone was very welcoming. The breakfast was delicious and left my partner and I stuffed. I got a Hippie Omelette with veggies, bacon, and feta, with a side of home fries. If you get the chance to stop through, it's worth it!

This place was absolutely precious! What a cute little hometown diner! The service was a classic hometown feel and I loved how everyone knew everyone. We are up visiting the area and would definitely recommend to anyone wanting a good diner experience with warming service and a clean environment.

Great spot! Eating breakfast at tiny hole in the wall diners is one of my favorite things to do and Lakeside Cafe delivered. Breakfast was good, Service was good, and it does - indeed - reside on the side of the lake with a nice view. Prices felt reasonable too -- welcome thing to see these days. We don't come through here often but wouldn't hesitate to stop again.

We had an awesome Father's Day lunch/brunch today. Misty was our server and very helpful! Food was tasty and good quantity! My son had the chicken and waffles, it was amazing. It was clean and cute. I'd go again to try other things! Oh I had the blueberry pancake . It covered the plate. They supplied sugar free syrup! Go try it.

    Breakfast was perfect and quick.

The food is decent, it's always busy, and for really being the only breakfast spot in town, they are pretty good.

All of the food was phenomenal. We both ordered mocktails which had great flavor, and our salad (woodland salad) was unique and also great. I ordered the blue cheese filet mignon with asparagus while he ordered lamb with broccoli. Both of us were very happy with our meals! The staff was kind and attentive, and our table on the porch had a wonderful view. We will be back every time we are in the area!

We spent a…read morelong weekend in the Manistee area and got a recommendation to eat at The Glenwood which was just a short drive north from where we were. I called for reservations the day before and found that only very early or very late was available. We also were given an option of seating in the restaurant or on the porch. We chose the porch and early reservation. We were seated at a nice table with a view of Portage Lake. We started with wine, (even though we bought copious amounts of wine on our trip, the wine list couldn't be ignored) my wife enjoying a glass of Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc and me a glass of cab. It was recommended we try their Almond Battered Shrimp. This appetizer was served with a cherry mustard sauce that was wonderful. The menu said jumbo shrimp and yes, they were jumbo with that nice "steak like" texture and flavor. For dinner my wife ordered the Whitefish special (Whitefish is on the regular menu but the special preparation was a bit different). This presentation had wilted spinach, onions with a light Parmesan crust. She let me try some and we both agreed this was the best whitefish either of have ever had. I ordered the "Everything Tuna". This was yellowfin tuna with light and dark sesame seeds, poppy seeds. onion, garlic and salt. I ordered it extremely rare (so rare a good vet could resuscitate it) with wasabi. This was a taste sensation. Dinners included broccoli and an excellent salad. The dressing was so good we bought a bottle on the way out. A "loaf" containing four rolls was also included. Our server was Cyrillia and her service was as outstanding as it gets. Often when I'm enjoying service of this calibre, I look around and see if we just got lucky or is everyone getting great service. It seemed that the service standard at The Glenwood is high. On the drive back to our hotel, we tried to come up with restaurants we've enjoyed as much. The list is slim with The Glenwood at or near the top.

My husband got the motherclucker sandwich (chips on the side), I got the Utter melt (also chips on the side), my dad got an omelette and my mom a chicken dish (i can't remember which) that came with a biscuit, potato wedges, and cottage cheese. My husband liked his food (besides his hashbrowns not being crispy as ordered), our youngest is 2 and a picker so he doesn't care, our oldest son said his food tasted weird but he ate it and I DID NOT like my omelette. I had 3 bites and a piece of toast and left the rest (2 year old was being whiny and I hate annoying other diners with loud children so we went to the car.) My omelette had no flavor at all. After adding salt, pepper and hot sauce (and not a lot at all mind you) all I could take was what I added. There were SO MANY barely cooked thoroughly hash browns that it might as well have just been an order of hash browns. The omelette was pitifully thin. It just wasn't good but whatever. My husband and oldest son stayed to finish their breakfast as I sat in the car with the youngest. The waitress (who was fantastic throughout the service) went to the back and apparently talked to the owner. My husband said she looked a bit like she was upset when she came back 5-8 mins later. Apparently she couldn't take it off the bill because the owner wasn't having it. Very strange, but whatever, my husband paid it. My husband went to tip the server a bit more than he had initially taken out and she said "no, you don't have to do that." But she was great and deserved a tip. As a business owner myself, the owner sounds like a jerk who has zero concept of good service. If a customer doesn't like something, you fix it and you don't treat your employees rudely either. I couldn't imagine treating my customers that way. Also, invest in some seasonings and lay off the hash browns. Fix your food and your attitude. And play some music in there or something.

Fantastic sandwich and pizza option if you're headed to or from Sleeping Bear Dunes!…read more We came across Shipwreck Cafe after stopping for gas next door on the way to Sleeping Bear Dunes. We wanted a kid friendly option and came in for the pizza, but ended up being blown away by the massive sandwich menu! Don't be discouraged by the line - it moves FAST!!!! The young people at the register and in the kitchen are efficient and so nice!!! We arrived about half an hour before the sign says pizzas are ready, and the lovely man at the register said "sure!" when we asked if we could order a pizza. The menu has something for everyone - Including plenty of vegetarian options (I think they even had a vegan option). I loved my Griffon, and the meat eaters in our group enjoyed the SS Noronic (a BLT) and the Fitzgerald. Our kids devoured their cheese pizza! They also carry Great Lakes Co Chips, which are some of the best potato chips we've ever had. Our sandwiches were all so inventive with delicious, fresh ingredients, amazing condiments, and the most freshly baked "pretzel rolls" ever. If this place wasn't a vacation stop for us, we'd be back all the time! Our kiddos favorite part, bedsides the pizza, were the tiny plastic swords that came in our sandwiches holding them together. When they each wanted one more sword, we went back inside and the staff inside was so used to kids asking for more tiny swords that their response to "May we have two more swords?" Was "Sure! What colors?!" Very different from what the response would have been where we're from. :) We even came back later in the day for the frozen custard!!! All in all, it was a great experience with great food, great service, plenty of outdoor picnic tables under umbrellas, and something for everyone to eat.
