There is a definite pattern in the quality of hotels that the Trafalgar Tour Company books for it's escorted tours. Everything about our tour was excellent except for the hotels. This particular hotel was one of three that I stayed at earlier this month that I would never in a million years choose for myself. Cons: - One block from the Cardiff Prison. That is really heart warming. Look at the map. - No ventilation or fans in the rooms and we could not open our window. They only have A/C in the lobby. - They need new carpet because it is very worn and it looks awful. - Elevators are old and really slow. I think there are only two. I opted to take the stairs the morning we checked out and got trapped in the stairwell with a bunch of people from my tour group. Our coach was leaving for England in 5 minute, so I ended up busting out of the Emergency Exit on the ground floor. After checking all the locked doors on every floor I really didn't care if the sirens and alarms went off. There are no good signs for the regular stairs. - Emergency Stair Well - No phones or ways to communicate with the outside world when you get stuck in there and all the doors lock behind you. Pros: - The lobby has A/C. Unfortunately, I can't sleep in the lobby. - Cardiff has some nice sites to see. Visit the Cardiff Castle if you have time. This was the best tour and we could actually sit on the furniture and touch some stuff. - We had a great dinner at the Sutton Mawr Farm which isn't too far away. I wish we could have stayed at their B&B instead of the Park Inn. - The Wi-Fi was free. If it had not been I would have deducted another star. I cannot believe this is part of the Radisson chain of hotels because it really needs a serious renovation. It is one step up from the Holiday Inn hotels I stayed at in England. Recommendations: - Check out a B & B in the country so you can enjoy the scenery. - Really check out the hotels on your itinerary if a tour company books the hotels for you. I really think this is how they make their money. They get a good group rate for a dump and they pocket the difference.

The main desk is in a unique courtyard area. I remember when it used to look like a townscape painted onto the walls so its a definite improvement. I've always found the staff to be really accommodating and while the rooms aren't the most glamourous they are conformable and have everything you need plus wifi. Rooms usually cost under £100 included breakfast and I've ever stayed here for around £50 once.

It was originally a house built in 1878 and is now a locally owned hotel. The grounds are well landscaped and maintained. It is next to a golf course. My room was on the smaller side overlooking the central fountain. The age of the hotel is evident and a remodel is due. There is no air conditioning and no screens on the windows, so if you open the windows you can expect insect roommates. The TV was small and channel selection standard for this area, don't expect complete sports coverage or American cable selections. There was a hot beverage tray and I had to juggle the outlet use between the TV, hot pot and my chargers frequently. Same for the lamp, fragrance ball and laptop at the desk. The shower flow was low and needs maintenance, but it worked. There is complimentary WiFi which worked very well. Since it wasn't very warm during my stay in late July, the room was comfortable and functional. The room rate was moderate. I had breakfast every morning. The continental selections were limited with a fruit bowl, baked goods, yogurt, boxed cereals and juice. There is no breakfast buffet and I ordered the same cooked breakfast which was fine with me. The restaurant is open for dinner from Wednesday through the weekend. It is a French themed menu, very good and reasonably priced. There is an adjoining leisure center with pool, spa, etc. which I did not use.

The "kitchen" seems to rule the roost here as almost every question is met with "let me check with "the kitchen." "The kitchen" must be an omnipotent presence because the staff usually has a bit of trepidation when going to ask "the kitchen" questions. They have a small selection of items on the dining room menu and the food is not excellent and any deviation from items on the menu are strictly frowned upon. The menu does not change from day to day. Luckily, you may order from the bar menu in the library. This menu does not change either, but it does break up the monotony. We tended to enjoy this food more, but service was slow and inconsistent . Breakfast is the better option when dining in the dining room. The staff for the most part seems to operate with little or no training. They NEVER filled the water glasses. That's your job. They NEVER poured the wine, again, that's your job. This hotel seems to lack strong leadership. We had two rooms. The Queen Elizabeth room has extremely low beams. If one is over 5'3", one WILL hit their heads. We had to go to the front desk for ice to put on head bumps more than once. The third floor is for the most fit as there is no lift. Yes, I know we were staying in a castle and it was not going to be perfect, but for the price one is paying here, you expect first class service. Having said all of that, the gardens in the back are lovely, the visage from the front lawn is beautiful and the staff, though poorly, trained are friendly. Liam in the library area was very friendly and helpful. They need to have a rotating menu. The options in the nearby town are few to dine. It is possible to have a rotating menu, we also stayed at other manor houses which had wonderful menus and well-trained staff this trip.

The rates per night were a bit steep, but I justified it because "how often do ya do something like this?" So we did a night with dinner and breakfast included. Getting to the castle wasn't too bad we rented a car and made the journey into town. Parking is available and I believe they also have a charging area for EV. We checked in and were taken to our room, Queen Margaret's room. The employee was kind and explained some of the amenities like the complimentary gin and the common areas of the castle. We changed and went to explore, there was a wedding the night we were there so I feel like our exploration was cut a bit short since areas were reserved for them. We noticed there was a scale available in the room, but it needed a new battery so we asked at the desk for a replacement and was informed it would be done at turndown service. After walking the gardens, we went for drinks and played some of the games available in the sitting room/lounge. It was a bit unclear as to how to get bar service or the other amenities advertised. Having done research before it felt like there were things to do but upon arrival it was hard to figure out what we were able to do. Dinner was excellent; while sitting in the lounge you're served some almonds/olives and canapés where you place your order and then you're brought back into the main dining room. There is plenty of food even without the formal 6 course meal but it really is a fancy experience and the food is true art. We made an assumption that turndown service would happen at dinner but upon returning to our room- 2 to 3 hours later, everything looked the same. The shower was incredible and the bed was nice. You're provided with a fan which was helpful. Breakfast was a bit disappointing after the dinner we had the previous night- not sure I would need that component again. At check out I was given the invoice for one of the wedding guests, we had to refund that amount and charge the costs for our room. Looking at my statement the charges aren't equal so that's mildly concerning as well. Overall, Thornbury was still a cool experience for the bragging rights of staying in Henry VIII's castle, but I don't think I need to do it again. I'd come for the dinner but maybe skip the overnight stay.

I also enjoyed the convient parking 1/2 mile away at the shopping mall in town as the parking at the hotel is only for a select few. Do yourself a favor and find somewhere else to stay.

Obviously your not going to get luxury from Travelodge but the bed was comfy and I was quite happy with the spacious room. I think its also cheaper than the town version and has onsite parking.

The only downsides I associate with travelodges are their often tired, worn out and uninspired decor and their unromantic motorway side locations. No so with the Travelodge at Atlantic Wharf Cardiff bay. They have obviously tried to create a bit of a flagship model hotel for the group here. It's light, airy, bright and clean plus its only 2 minutes walk to the bars and restaurants of Cardiff Bay and 10 minutes to the City Centre. So if you're not planning a romantic weekend you could do a lot worse than book this during one of its many offer periods.

We'd walk through its majestic doors, took in the gloriousness of the reception area with all its pomp and grandeur somewhat mystified by what a bargain we had nabbed ourselves. Receptionist: "...Oh wait. You want the OTHER Marriott hotel". Now, I know that Bristol is a fairly large city, but to have two Marriott hotels just a 15 minute walk apart - what are the odds?! (Apparently lots of people make that mistake. Hopefully.) When we eventually got to the right hotel, it felt ever-so-slightly anticlimactic after seeing the beautiful Royal counterpart. But it turned out that we had still grabbed a great room at a discount price. We had a view of the park, easy access to Cabot Circus and a very pleasant resident late night bar in which we had a night cap. The beds were of the sink-into-able kind, with a hot-hot-hot power shower for £70 for two people. To get the best deal, do a bit of internet shopping rather than booking direct - and make sure you go to the right hotel!
