I would have given this place a fraction of a star or no stars if I could have.
Avoid this place at all cost!!!
I checked in, found they lied to me all this time when they said Wi-Fi throughout; I was told to get the Wi-Fi, sign up to the Cloud (sign up and give Sky marketing all my info, I expect emails and cold calls from Sky and anyone Sky sells that data to, now); The Wi-Fi worked, in the municipal TV room - the only place it worked. As for up in my room, no signal, no internet, nothing. As for the municipal TV room, the TV in there was meant to be Freeview but couldn't get a signal, so the 1 TV for everybody didn't work, so YHA provided a DVD player and a modest selection of DVDs;
back to the main issue, I was assured Wi-Fi covered the entire building after booking upon finding out that the rooms don't have TVs in them; that claim was a bald-faced lie, what does this place expect the solo traveler to do in this day and age all night, sit alone with their thoughts, f' that! I am currently in the process of a full refund because I could not use the room I booked; I checked out, told them why, and am waiting for the outcome of if I get a full refund or if I have to sue the YHA for legal costs and the cost of the room which was the same price as a competent hotel in Whitby I ended up using that I should have used for this night all along, so I will update this review pending the outcome of the refund they owe me.
The location isn't for those with vertigo or agoraphobia either, because it's on a cliff at the top of the famous 199 Steps; it gets windy up there, the sky is above you, the sea is there and you could see for miles, and it's high up.
I was recommended this place by 2 idiots on YouTube on a channel called Travel Beans who seem to be traveling around England using YHAs all the time so are probably in the pay of the YHA, Travel Beans are idiots though, they spoke of a Full Yorkshire Breakfast too at a cafe in Whitby but failed hard when they didn't bother or care to share or divulge the information on which place in Whitby it was, I myself had to do my own detective work to figure out what place it was, so I should have known any business Travel Beans do recommend would be a ripoff and a con and a lie.
