YMCA Camp Cheerio - Summer Camps Near Me - Glade Valley, North Carolina

Both of my kids attended Camp Cheerio last summer (July 2016) for one week sessions. They had never been to sleepaway camp before so mommy was nervous. My son was 10 and my daughter 13 their first summer at Camp Cheerio. They both had a wonderful time and will return this summer for two weeks. We chose Camp Cheerio because both my husband and his mother had attended this camp and had good memories. Also, the price is reasonable compared to some other sleep-away programs we've checked out. The cost per kid is $2,060.00 for two weeks. The shorter one got a $50.00 sibling discount. We just filled out the kids activity forms for this summer and they have so many programs to choose from. My son loves outdoor stuff so he has hiking as his first choice and my daughter is into horses at the moment and is looking forward to riding. The mountain setting is idyllic and the bunks and facilities look clean and well maintained. My daughter the foodie said the food was excellent. All of the counselors were welcoming and smiling. Weird experience being from New York and South Florida but I guess people actually are friendly in other places. The camper check in program ran smoothly. Read all the stuff on the website before heading there and you won't have any trouble. read more

This is the best camp hands-down! Our kids love this camp so much and sadly last year was the last year to be a camper for my eldest because he aged out but for the other Hopefully, this year will be her sixth! They love it so much and call it their second home! Every year they look forward to going to camp cheerio and are very sad when they leave. They have a wide variety of fun activities and are never bored! I have heard from both that the food is amazing and the cabins are really nice! Hopefully it doesn't get canceled this year! This is my son's third summer at Cheerio; he spent only a week the first summer but when I picked him up, he immediately said, "Can I stay two weeks next summer?" And, so it is been two weeks since then. He LOVES Cheerio. I love Cheerio as well. I know Z is safe at Cheerio under the supervision of the Counselors. Not-to-mention, he's having a BLAST and making new friends, he's also learning leadership skills and life lessons. ALL of the Counselors have been amazing. And, some return year after year which makes it nice to see familiar faces at drop off and comforting that the Counselors remember your kid by name. Check in and pick-up have always been smooth and the Staff and Counselors are always welcoming and enthusiastic. I'm sorry, EM, didn't have a positive review. Cheerio has a long standing unblemished history unlike many sleep away camps. It's sad that EM focused on the tragic, unfortunate and accidental death of, Sanders, a 12 y/o female camper who got tangled in the Zip-line a few years ago. Believe me, her death hasn't been forgotten by any Staff member at Cheerio, it devastated them. Note: Cheerio never replaced the Zip-line. And, sadly, EM, also focused on the anti-Semitic comment but didn't share who made the comment; was it a kid or a counselor? Frankly, I CAN'T imagine a counselor making any derogatory comments about anyone. In fact, the counselors come from varying backgrounds making for a diverse group of leaders. I'm guessing it was a kid who likely didn't know any better or was raised to be anti- Semitic. Yes, very unfortunate, but similar comments are likely made at school, on the playground or a playdate, I wouldn't hold Cheerio responsible. My children attended Camp Cheerio despite a series of unnerving events (death of camper on zip line one year...and an unexplained fire the ne). Unfortunately several counselors made anti-Semitic and racist comments. We found out about after pick up. We brought these to the director's attention via a survey but never got the return phone call requested. That says volumes. I think the Cheerio staff is not detail-oriented enough, whether it's keeping an eye on Anti-Semitism or safety. We won't return. read more

My children have been going to Camp Cheerio and Adventure for 6 years now. They both have had wonderful experiences! It has meant so much to them in developing friendships and self-esteem, not to mention all of the fun activities. My daughter talks about wanting to be a counselor at camp when she is old enough. Excellent. Your kids will have a classic camp experience here with activities ranging from archery to riflery to arts & crafts. I've sent kids from ages 7 to 13 and they've loved it. read more
