This is the perfect place to come for a quick lunch mid-shopping trip. I spent many hours in the Bullring waving away my student loan, and we usually always found ourselves at Yo Sushi at some point during our outing! Set on the ground floor of Selfridges there is lots going on around you and it's usually fairly noisy. Not the place to come if you want a relaxed lengthy lunch, but great for a quick bite. There is usually a queue during lunch time hours, but the converyor-belt style service means that it moves pretty quickly. The selection is great although it's definitely worth ordering a couple of plates if there's something you really want! My favourites are the salmon & cream cheese roll and the duck seaweed wrap - delish. read more

Food was great. And prices are good given the cost of other sushi locations. Although we were told that our 3rd off birthday discount code was too old to be valid and not valid on saturdays. Odd considering we had recieved it yesterday and it read it was valid until the 26th of Feb and every day besides Monday. We didn't argue it as it didn't seem worth the hassle but it resulted in having to pay full price which defeated the point of our reasoning for going there in the first place. I was working in Birmingham for a few days and needed somewhere to eat just before it shut for the night. I had to order from the menu as there were no vegetarian options on the belt, but the items were delivered faster than I have ever had at any Yo! and they were perfectly put together (unlike my recent visits to some of the Scottish stores). The staff were great. The only comment is there was an issue with the till system and we had to go out of the Yo! area and into the department store to pay the bill, which caused delay and was annoying for all the customers, but these things happen sometimes. So having been THAT person who refused to eat raw salmon amongst other foods I have always vetoed YoSushi when choosing a place to eat, but today I took the plunge and I'm glad I did! The carousal style service for picking your food is much more entertaining and fun than I was expecting, only niggle is not knowing in quick enough time what was what, luckily the friendly staff are on hand to assist. The portion sizes are great. I'd imagine the average person would need at least 3 dishes which are reasonably priced, however if you were very hungry you could rack up quite a bill. Yo Sushi is on the ground floor of Selfridges within the Bullring and right at the entrance to the store, putting it at the forefront of most people's choices for food. It's always busy at lunch on the weekends and it can take a while to be seated. A polite queue tends to form around noon. Even though it can be busy, the staff don't rush to get you out. The dishes, as with other Yo Sushi establishments, are priced according to the colour on the dish. They can vary from £3.00 to £6.50 for the more exotic dishes. There is a good variety of food going around the belt at all times and new dishes are constantly being added. You can also choose a particular dish from the menu if you want and its made to order. You just ring the little bell on the table in front of you and the staff come over and take your order. You an also do this for drinks. I'd like to point out the water is not free! I find that I always spend more money here than I want to, but the food is always tasty. And, considering I knew how much it was before I picked it, I can only blame myself. I do find that Woktastic is better priced for me personally as I tend to eat a lot of sushi, so the all-you-can-eat is a wiser choice. read more

While travelling for business with a colleague we did some shopping in Bullring and decided to try sushi after for dinner. I had other (higher rated) places in mind but couldn't find them so settled on Yo! Sushi. Concept is simple, sit down and choose your meal/sushi from what is on the conveyor belt. If you are unable to find something you'd like on the belt, then you can always press the button to order something from the menu (warm dishes can only be ordered from the menu). The plates that the sushi/dish is served on indicates the price of the item (for example, yellow, green, pink, orange, etc. all have different prices, which are mentioned in the menu). You indicate when you are finished eating and the waiter running around will count up your total of plates and bill you accordingly. Although I find the concept fun, the way it is set up is more for you to eat quickly and go, so you don't feel too comfortable to sit around for a while. Additionally, I don't think the quality of the sushi is that great nor is it worth what you pay for it. I've had much better elsewhere. Another thought that ran through my mind as we were some of the last to leave (we had a late dinner), was what happens to all this uneaten sushi?? I certainly hope they don't just throw it all away, yet at the same point I hope they don't serve it the next day either.... I haven't been to a Yo! Sushi in over 6 years after a bad experience at the Leicester branch. Now how much you pay is based on what you eat and how much you eat. There are 6 different colour of plate or bowl ranging from £1.90 per bowl for green all the way up to £5.00 for grey bowl. It depends on what you want to eat, a grey bowl can get you soft shell crab tempura and the green bowl is usually edamame (soy beans). If you don't watch it you can end up spending £20 and having roughly 3 plates of food, the plates are also more like side plate size but the point is to try lots of different things not order one huge plate, it makes an introduction into Japanese cuisine much more gentle. Now I went on a Monday, I don't know how long the blue Monday offer had been running but it's pretty good value. Basically there are 50 dishes for you to choose from, you see them float past you on a conveyor belt. You like it? Pick it up. Don't put your dirty bowl back on the conveyor, leave a neat little stack so they can tot up your bill when your done. I got prawn katsu for £2.50, I think it's normally £3.50 (not sure) so I saved a pound! But the edamame floating around too are also £2.50 so they up the price there. But mostly your getting a better deal. I wouldn't recommend this for large groups as you sit side by side on a bar, and if it's really busy somebody might keep picking the really good dishes before they even get to you. read more

Visited here for "Blue Mondays" special offer day yesterday evening. This means there's an offer of certain plates all turned into blue plates and all reduced to £2.50. While things tend to be relatively all the same in chains like these, I find the Birmingham branch is particularly hit and miss in quality. Depending on the chef you'll either get a wonderful fresh meal bursting with flavour or a sad plate of charcoal. The service however is always exemplary even when I order tap water (tap water, unlike the filter water, is always free!) Would recommend a visit, especially on the Blue Mondays. I suggest asking the server for orders of takoyaki (octopus in batter balls) and pumpkin korokke (pumpkin croquettes) as this will ensure you get these hot and fresh and - very importantly - still for £2.50 a plate! read more

I have formed a habit of going to yo-sushi after going around the Bullring, the staff are (mostly) lovely and the food (even though its a little expensive) is amazing. I recommend ordering the miso soup as it has free unlimited refills and it is quite tasty. Also it is a good idea to go on Monday as the majority of dishes are only £2.50! Also if you dont link sushi they have a wide range of rice, fruit and fish. Yet there are a few problems with the restaurant. Firstly the amount of time required to que for the restaurant is frustratingly long if you are in a rush (especially on weekends). Another problem is the response time when you call the waiter. But these are both quite minor problems and don't really take anything away from your meal. Overall I think the restaurant is lovely, it has a great atmosphere and high quality sushi. I got into the habit of eating at Yo instead of Wagamama, and had a few nice meals there, but the last time i went was bad enough that i will not go there again. I went at 6.30pm on a Friday, which i thought would be a sensible time. I found a poor selection on the belt, the majority of the staff were either rude, indifferent, had no communication sklils, or all three. The most annoying part was when the waitress sat a couple in the seats immediately next to me, asked if the lids were from my meals (which they were) and then moved them in front of me, and then the person who was sitting next to me had no personal awareness and dipped her hair into my soy sauce. read more

This restaurant is located inside a department store in the Bullring. It had a long conveyor but and you pay per plate. They do have a menu and meals you can eat as well. The counter is narrow and had little stools.....so its similar to many places I have eaten in cities in Japan, especially noodle shops and izakaya. It is in the open yet feels a little cozy while also being full of activity. You can hit a button and service will come. During our meal service was very fast even though there were many people. The sushi and sashimi quality was generally average but some were tasty. Pricing wasn't cheap but not crazy expensive for Japanese food. Sushi (which is sort of an Eats, Shoots and Leaves name presenting the grammarian with all sorts of emphasis difficulties), is pretty much the best sushi for the price you can get in England outside of London's Japan Centre, or without paying an arm and two legs. Unfortunately for Yo, Sushi, this isn't saying much. As a chain, they're cute, fun, and non-intimidating, and seem, for the most part, to employ Japanese people, lending an air of credibility to the whole set up. Like in Tokyo fast food sushi restaurants, the sushi is prepared, cut and laid out on bowls which are then put on a conveyor belt that goes around the customer's eating area. Punters pick out what they like the look of, and eat it. They stack their plates beside them, and when they're done, the Hey, Yo Sushi! staff calculate the total. The prices vary based on the colour of the plate, with the nicest dishes being the most expensive. I've never had outstanding sushi here (especially because lord knows how long it's on the conveyor belt), but I've never left disappointed, either. Service is kept to a minimum because you pick your own food, and just order drinks. The Bullring Yo! Sushi is outstandingly busy, and you have to go at just the right time (3pm on a random Tuesday) to get a seat without queueing for 20 minutes or so. If you've never been to the Bullring, be warned that the little mini-pod "restaurants" in Selfridge's Food Hall are all open, so shoppers are walking right past you as you eat. Yo sushi is a really great place to catch up with friends whilst shopping or to have some lunch to give my boyfriends feet a break whilst dragging him around the shops. I've become a pro with chop sticks now and my favourite dish, although not sushi is the teriyaki beef. When you go on a Monday or have registered as a student and bring your code you get a discounted price. There is a menu you can order from and tell the chef or you can just pick up items from the conveyor belt. We normally end up doing both as to try out a bit of everything when we go. I had never been to Yo Sushi before this one so wasn't really sure what to expectit looked great but I knew I didn't like sushi so was worried that there would be nothing I would like.However,I needn't have worried as they do a selection of hot noodles and chow meins etc which is great if your not a sushi fan.The different coloured bowls all go round on a conveyer belt,you look up the menu to see what colour the dish you want is,take it from the belt and eat.Couldn't be simpler and you have none of this waiting about for orders to be taken and bills to be paid. read more

All the times I visited this branch of Yo Sushi! I've had a generally positive experience. The only 3 issues I've had are:the place is really noisy when it's busy,it takes quite a while to be seated and it takes a long time to be served when ordering certain menu items. Super terrible service! A fat female waitress treated us so bad. When we walk in, we waited by the counter for service and a family come waited beside us. She came and said you have to wait there and go straight to led the family to the seats. When we order food, she was very impatient. When we want to pay the bill, we showed my student discount code. She was pretty despise upon us and said the code is only for one person per meal. But we have used this many times and no one told us about this. It was my first time to try Yo Sushi.I picked 4 pink plates (ebi sushi, prawn katsu, japanese cheesecake and ordered 1 spicy seafood udon, 2 cokes) and was billed £26.62. Cold food were dried, tiny portions, not tasty at all, noodle was a joke which anyone could finish in 1 bite, the rest was full of soup liquid. Poor quality, poor quantity. This is a fantastic place to eat, you can watch the people rushing around the bullring in birmingham while eating excellent quality food, may i add that it is freshly prepared in front of your eyes.
