The black ramen was flavorful. Yum. I can't really place my finger on how to describe its flavor, but it was good. Promise. The genmaicha had a good ratio of brown rice to matcha. It can definitely get busy around the peak times, however there is an upstairs dining area, where I am always able to find a seat. Great food, great service, great value and easy access! I ordered the spicy tonkotsu ramen, a friend ordered the cha-shu ramen, and another ordered the miso tonkotsu ramen. After you order ramen they ask what kind of noodle you prefer, thin (standard) or thick (udon style.) Word of note, each bowl comes with two egg halves, so don't be a fatty and order an extra egg like I did...but you will probably want to order extra cha-shu, unless you only like 1 or 2 pieces of cha-shu. I ordered extra cha-shu ($2) and only had 3 pieces...I think they're skimping a little here. We also ordered a salmon roll and skinny avocado roll, and these were really good, especially the cut of salmon. Sushi is definitely good and reasonable here. Taking the first bite, the ramen was really good...but after a few bites it seemed to be missing something. I'm not sure what it was, but the flavour started to get bland, on top of not having many pieces of cha-shu to add more flavour to the ramen. Still better than Ryo's Noodle, but I don't think I'd venture out of the city to come here for ramen.

I was so disgusted and wanted to send it back but my boyfriend insisted I not make a fuss. So I sat there and ate the sashimi instead. When I thought I might try a piece of sushi from the non hair found roll, guess what, I found a hair just sitting on top of the rice( see posted pictures if you don't believe me) that was really all I could handle. 1 hair, ok I don't think its acceptable, but 2 hairs in 1 plate?! That's just asking for a health inspector. I had to say something at this point to our server who said he would talk to the chef. He ended up comping the sushi rolls which was nice but really I want the restaurant to take a little more care in the kitchen and pride in their food. A restaurant at least should have good food and meet the minimum health standards. I'm sorry but I just don't think I can come back.

I thoroughly enjoyed the ramen after I heaped on some chilli flakes. This isn't readily available on the table so don't forget to ask if you're a fan. The soup was pretty delicious and I almost drank my bowl dry. The magma roll was a bit disappointing though. Not as hot as I expected. Having salmon and canned tuna pieces together probably isn't the best idea either. The tuna definitely out ways the salmon even though it's the salmon you really want to task. Overall a great place for a ramen fix if you are ever in western sydney.

The quality is awesome, especially for such a small restaurant. I've been visiting this place since it first opened and been a loyal fan since. FYI they do open on Sundays now so don't be deterred!

From the street Sakae looks like any other shops in the centre of a bustling Illawarra Street with its modest entrance. There's nothing flashy about this place. The menu was extensive with lots of Entree options on offer. My husband had the Tempura Entree. It's a decent size for an entree, it includes 2 pieces of prawn, 1 piece of fish and 6 pieces of veggies fried in tempura batter. I expected tempura batter to be light and this feels heavier than what I'm used to. I had the Yakizana Entree. It's lightly salted half grilled Mackerel. The fish had been de-boned and the skin was crispy. It was a nice dish. Highlight of the night was the Deluxe Sashimi. It contains 22 pieces of sashimi goodness. It was a feast of raw Salmon, Tuna and Kingfish, as well as scallops, oyster, squid and Ikura or Salmon Caviar. Cut with great consistency, everything was fresh and the Ikura was real (unlike some other Sushi/Japanese place that serves fake ones). It was delish! I was a bit disappointed with the Cooked Tuna and Cucumber Hand Roll. The tuna was too mushy and it was so loosely rolled that when picked up most of the fillings fell out. But the mini rolls were neat and beautifully presented. The service was warm and friendly. And overall it was a pleasant experience. Would love to try other entrees the next time we come.

I am a sucker for Asian Cuisine, especially Japanese and especially their ramen and chicken. Already ate some of the noodles I don't remember now but I saw this secret menu thing online but it was tonkotsu+spicy broth I think.. It was exactly what I wanted. The noodles were perfectly cooked. Not too hard, not too soggy and the egg was so perfect and it was steaming hot!! The karaage chicken was also so yummy and it came out piping hot. Don't remember what mum ordered but she loved her ramen as well. Price is awesome for what you get although we were in a long queue, it took less than 10 minutes to get us in. I'm planning to go again this weekend. 12/10
