Our cruise had canceled our Juneau port and so any helicopter tours there were cancelled, so we were pretty bummed and hoped that Ketchikan would be a little better when it came to getting on a helicopter. My husband booked the flight with the nicest woman over the phone who didn't make us feel pressured in any way. She was super informative and sweet. Our email told us to meet someone from the company near the bronze statue near berth 2, so we waited a few minutes and no one approached us and there wasn't anyone with a sign for the company, so we were a little confused at first. Eventually we were able to find the person picking us up and he was apologetic that he didn't have the sign on him, so no worries there. The tour headquarters is one of the comfiest places I've been, it was so welcoming and everyone is just so nice. We were given a safety demo and Ryan Maehs flew us in one of the cleanest helicopters I've ever seen. Ryan was super knowledgeable and took us to see great wildlife and even landed for about 20 or so minutes while we were able to put our feet in the water and enjoy Alaskan nature away from the crowds. Truly an awe-inspiring moment. Thank you, Ketchikan Helicopters, for being so great. And thank you, Ryan, for putting up with us and allowing us to enjoy Alaska.

After my husband enjoyed the excursions at the other two stops on the cruise, he asked if we could book something for our day in Ketchikan, hopefully a helicopter tour. So the night before we docked, I looked on Yelp and found Ketchikan Helicopters and explored their website for almost an hour. I emailed Ryan at Ketchikan Helicopters and he responded very quickly with all of the information I needed. When we pulled into port the next morning, I was able to call Ryan and finalize the details for our trip. Ryan made it extremely easy to find him when it came time for the tour. He was so welcoming and reassuring. And he went out of his way to build a rapport with our six-year-old son, who very quickly lost all anxiety about going up in a helicopter for the first time. My husband is retired from the Army and he immediately felt comfortable with the helicopter given it's immaculate condition, which helped me feel more relaxed. (I had never been on a helicopter, so I have no idea what a well-maintained helicopter looks like. My husband on the other hand has been on dozens and dozens of helicopters.) Ryan made sure we experienced everything we asked for with the tour. He was able to take us where we saw five black bears. He sat the helicopter down for 20 minutes and let us explore the terrain ourselves. (This was amazing! It was so beautiful. It gave us our first experience in Alaska where we were far removed from anyone, which is rare for people who tour Alaska by cruise, but is common for backpackers.) It was a long tour and we felt we really got our money's worth for the excursion. We felt safe with Ryan's decades of experience and his well-maintained helicopter. And the landscape he flew us over was breathtaking. Words and photos can't come close to doing it justice. What's really cool is that both my son and my husband say this way the highlight of the trip for them. I think that's a pretty good endorsement, given the six-year-old really enjoyed all Disney was offering on the ship and my husband had a trip to Alaska on his bucket list.. Everything about the helicopter tour was wonderful. It was very easy to book it, even with very short notice. Ryan was not only a skilled pilot, he was also very warm and informative. We were picked up by Luanne and driven by bus to the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary where we met our…read moreguide Ella. We walked casually through the forest while learning about the surrounding area and wildlife. We saw some eagles on our walk and eventually came upon the boardwalk near the salmon hatchery where we happened upon a black bear with its recent catch of salmon. After being mesmerized with the bear we walked further on the boardwalk to spy a ton of eagles perched in the trees and along areas in the low tide. Many full grown and juvenile eagles were spotted. Next we headed to watch a totem being carved them onto the blacksmithing area. Because we spent extra time with the bear we had a tad less time to wander around the grounds before boarding the bus again and heading back to the port. I thoroughly enjoyed the educational aspects of the excursion as well as the live appearances from the wildlife. It was an intimate tour with 11 of us total plus Ella. We really enjoyed the beautiful day outside along with wildlife spotting!

As we approached the hatchery, Emily was informed there was a black bear eating salmon in the area. We really appreciated that additional gear was provided at no charge. For example, they provided waterproof pants and a jacket! We booked the e-bike tour with hike through rainforest (because we love hiking and biking of course but also because we were on a budget and couldn't afford the kayaking). Although we mingled with the individuals who DID do the kayaking and they absolutely loved it. They were provided all their gear at no additional charge. KKC was very specific with their directions on where to meet them. As tourists and first timers on a cruise and first timers in Ketchikan, I was nervous I wouldn't be able to find them. However, Forest and Chris were very friendly and welcomed us as soon as we approached the group. The van ride to the facility was about 20 min. And our driver Chris was wonderful at telling us about the town and pointing unique things about the town (like the floating Safeway). Upon arrival - we met our tour guide Ryan. Even though he told us he had only been there for a few weeks, he was very knowledgeable about the area, about our hike and about the rainforest. He was engaged and really encouraged us to enjoy every aspect of the e-bike ride and to ask him anything and everything about the rainforest. He told us about unique plants and he even helped me be brave enough to try "rainforest spinach"!! There are two waterfalls that you'll pass during your bike ride and he learned how much I loved waterfalls. So on our way back, he made it a point to stop so I could take pictures. Ryan was wonderful to chat with and we had a wonderful time hiking and hiking with Ryan! Perhaps the biggest reason why I am giving a 5 star review is the hospitality and customer service we received! We made a big mistake with our excursion planning and had our next one starting before our e-bike reservation was scheduled to end. Forest was very kind to make multiple calls to help us resolve the issue. And then he and Ryan personally gave us a ride back to town early so we could make it to our next excursion! They made every effort to ensure we had a great time in Ketchikan and WE DID!! We will definitely come back for the kayaking and other excursions! Great company and great time! Oh - After our e-bike and hike, Chandler had prepared a nice appetizer and drink area for us. And we enjoyed so time mingling with others while watching boats sail in and out. Everyone was wonderful! All of their boats, bibs, and pfds are incredible and the tandem kayaks looked like such a fun time! The trip was incredibly enjoyable thanks to our two guides, Koda and Dana. They were clear and concise when providing instructions, and they delivered them in a positive and supportive manner. They were super entertaining and radiated love for nature. Dana met us down at the #3 berth and was very inviting, immediately engaging all of us in conversation, telling us what would happen next. She had such a positive attitude and gave a great tour while driving us to the site for kayaking. It is obvious that she is an incredible asset to a team both on and off the water! On the trip another guide joined us, so both Koda and Dana led us to some beautiful views. They expertly pointed out seals, eagles, and a rare sighting of a baby deer along the shoreline! They taught us exciting facts about the trees, the moss, the tides, and other fascinating topics. The tour was perfectly timed and never felt rushed, even in the end as rain was nearing. Koda and Dana were so on top of predicting how much time it would take us to paddle to different places, and they both made great calls about avoiding white caps and redirecting to other equally beautiful routes. I cannot recommend enough that you book this kayak experience and ask for Dana and Koda to be your tour guide! Koda also does the biking tour some days, and if I had enough time, I would've booked that excursion as well! She is so knowledgeable, respectful of nature, and kind! The snacks are also great!!

This meal was a bit of a mixed bag, though more about presentation and delivery than about food. Our group was met outside by the food and beverage manager, who looked very proud of himself and his position. He welcomed us but then went into a lecture about how the seating will be arranged and not to get lost after the meal going to look at their waterfall because people have gotten lost in the past... The seating was a cluster. F&B Man started yelling out, "Do I have a party of 9?" If no takers, he then went down to the next number and so on until we got a winner and that's how we were seated. Now obviously I am not a professional seater or restaurant host, but given that this excursion was signed up for quite some time ago and the bus driver contacted the restaurant earlier in the day to advise of the number of kids meals and food allergy/sensitivity guests they would have, couldn't they also ask the driver to provide the number of guests and how many in each party? Our friend doesn't do seafood and he shared that with the bus driver. He was served a bacon cheeseburger; no inquiry about if he ate beef and/or pork, or how he would want it prepared... Thankfully he said it was great! At any rate, we all got seated like good little cattle and were served their Taste of Alaska; halibut with lemon, crab cake, salmon and some rice. I thought everything was quite good, though the salmon was a bit on the drier side. Dessert was a berry cobbler that was nothing to write home about--could have used some ice cream to pep it up a bit.

The restaurant is classy and looks exactly like an Alaskan lodge should look--with huge picture windows looking out onto the Tongas Narrows. The atmosphere is spot on. The menu seems extremely limited. We were there the first week in September so maybe they were cutting down the menu in view of the seasonal closing coming soon. I had a Ribeye which was $60+ and was kinda average. Very fatty, even for a ribeye. The sides (whipped potatoes and carrots) were good, but kind of skimpy. My wife wound up sending back her tomato soup which had some undercooked chickpeas. The good was good, but we were not wowed. Maybe it was just a bad night late in the season. I know that our local friends consider this to be one of the nicest restaurants in Ketchikan. I would try it again next year.

We've been attempting to do a guys fishing trip every 5 years, but its been 6 years since our last…read moreweek long visit. The charter we usually go with had a break down, so he personally referred us to Kit, the Owner and Operator of Alaskan Dream Sportfishing. Working out of Knudson Cove (about a 24 minute drive from the downtown and the cruise ships), we were met exactly at 6:30am at the marina by his boat. Clean fishing boat that sat the 5 of us comfortably, with a big back deck to run around and fish off of. Also, there's an area to get out of the weather (wind, sun, rain) along with a toilet. We were taken on an hour and a half boat ride to who knows where, and as we approached the fishing grounds, we were greeted by pods of humpback whales and porpoises breaching at the surface. Kit set up the rods for each of us in under 5 minutes, and with in a matter of seconds, we were hooked into a silver and king salmon. Let's just say, he put us right on top of the fish!! Even with about 15+ lost fish, a couple of tangles, and broken rings on the hooks, Kit got our lines back in the water and kept us fishing, or in our case, catching! We hit our limits (30 salmon between the 5 of us) in an hour!! Then we took a short boat ride away and switch rods and set ups, and BOOOM! We were right ontop of the halibut now! We did have to battle a sea lion that gave us hell, but we were still able to land our limits of halibut. Made it back to the marina in the early afternoon, helped clean all of our fish, and then it was time for some cold beers with our Captain. This was THE BEST DAY of fishing we've all ever had! About Kit; Extremely professional! Felt like all of us were old friends, having a great time fishing and raggin' on each other, because thats what guys do. He did not show any signs of anger, frustration, or awkwardness our entire time with him. He continued to keep his composure and was a happy go lucky type of guy. His enthusiasm for fishing is infectious! He's a local family man, born and raised in Ketchikan and has always been on the water.
