Stones clocks and…read moreowls The Ogunquit Library is a relatively small building that was dedicated and built in 1897. As with most libraries of the time it was constructed with private money. I love old libraries and love old libraries made out of old stones the best. This entire building is made out of local field stones. Incredibly stunning to look at. I spent some time just walking around the lovely building admiring the work and textures of the library. Of course having lovely gardens outside the library doesn't exactly hurt the experience. But the library is more than just a lovely building made from cool stones and surround by beautiful flowers. Although that would probably be enough for me to give it five stars. However to make things even better the inside of the library is lovely too. All kinds of cool things are inside; great old pictures, stuffed owls, huge grandfather clocks, lovely ceilings, rocking chairs and even a small model of the library. It even has books, periodicals and computers but you can find those at any library. This library is definitely something special, both on the inside and out. Maine has a whole lot of very cool libraries but this one is really, really one of the most stunning.

It's also made of stone, but the style is more Tudor and the inside is larger. This library is relatively small, but it's well laid out, elegant in design and functional. It was built in 1897. You can read its history on the library website. It gladdened my heart just to sit inside it. I checked the shelves of books for sale, a relatively small collection left over from the book sale, according to the librarian, a cordial young woman w/ an English accent who grew up in London, but didn't find a copy of "A Gentleman in Moscow". There are the usual computers and shelves and shelves of books. The library is open from 9-12 and 2-5 daily, except Sundays. In the winter it's closed Sunday, Monday and holidays.

There's a lot of chairs and tables by windows so you can get some natural sunlight while you read or work. The second floor has a lot of maps and information about Portsmouth which is nice if you're unfamiliar with the area. The staff is very friendly and help. I am a fan of renovating old mills, so this library's location didn't disappoint! I went on a Monday morning, around 10, with my 15-month-old daughter. We were the only ones there. I was delighted when we turned the corner to enter the library. It's very nicely decorated! It still needs work in some areas, but it's clear that a lot of thought and work has gone into making this a comfortable and inviting place. The librarian was SO nice. We had a friendly conversation and she was very helpful. I'd like to come back for storytime to get a more well-rounded picture. The only reason for 4 stars at this time...no baby changing station in the bathroom (which was a little icky...)! It's fine...I'm used to changing her on the floor no matter where we are. But sometimes it's awkward with other people around. Thankfully, we were all alone.

We met a man who was working (or was he just hanging out? not sure) there and was nice enough to give us a special tour of the place! He was so knowledgeable about the history of Portsmouth and was so passionate about the town. I saw some really neat artifacts here, including whale vertebrae...which totally made me squeal in excitement. Just take a visit to the Portsmouth Athenaeum and strike up a conversation. Couple flights of stairs or an elevator and you find yourself in the middle of a pretty neat research library. We went to the North End History exhibit and it was super-informative and very interesting. Lots of neat old photos and details about parts of Portsmouth we drive by on a regular basis without realizing their historical significance. Ask for James, ask a few questions, and sit back and laugh as he takes the history of the area and wraps it up in funny and memorable stories and anecdotes. Just a note - finish your food and coffee before visiting. There are some incredibly old books in this place and you don't want to spill!
