Well, I saw a model unit and decided to go forward with it, paying a $500 deposit only to be placed in a trash unit that didn't even remotely resemble the first one. The single worst transaction and experience of my life was with Young America, at the Lodge. All of the other usury aside - we got a $6,000 charge after move out for 3 broken chairs and a missing fridge drawer. After threatening legal action, they dropped it to $1,500 which we paid to be done with them. It was worth $500/person to not have to interact with this company anymore. $6,000 just happened to be the EXACT price of what they lost in rent from a random assignment roommate who squatted there until he was kicked out by the sheriffs office. YA selected and assigned us that roommate, who the three of us did not want, and we had no say in it. He was arrested multiple times, bringing the police and sheriffs office into my apartment on a weekly basis to check things out and I was thankful to have the police around so much while living with YA. He was a proud and open gang member, who brought other "killers" as he called them into our home. This was an entirely traumatic experience for us, as was dealing with YA. There was nothing they could do to get him out, and they charged us for their atrocious judgement. Their employee, Randall Paulissen, made our lives a nightmare. If you are a student, you have other options. You cannot imagine the financial burden, time, and emotional toll that doing business with YA will have on your life, ANY other option is better. read more

I do NOT recommend YA. My apartment was filthy, with bodily fluids all over one bedroom and broken furniture. Water filter was broken and gave out brown drinking water. We also requested maintenance to fix a back door lock that we felt was unsafe. Shortly after, we had an attempted break-in and a nearby domestic dispute (police were involved), so we requested the lock be fixed again. Lock remained broken for a MONTH. Their excuse? "You chose early move in, so you agreed to take the apartment 'as is, and with all faults'. We'll get to it when we get to it." We pushed furniture up against the doors every night and I slept with a Renaissance faire sword by my bed. My lease ended a month ago and YA is still charging me for frivolous things -- even though I no longer live there. Parents, your children are not safe with YA. Avoid at all costs. read more

Completely takes advantage of college students. Entire staff is turned over frequently leading to incompetency and inaccuracy. Have had countless issues with extra charges to my account, cancelled payments, maintenance issues, etc. Was locked out of my apartment for 3 months while the company gave me keys to other apartments instead of my own and refused to pay for a new key to be made. The fees are insane and no one can explain why they have been charged, but good luck trying to speak to a manager. I know the college-age employees are not to blame for the issues, but instead point to lack of thorough training. One of the big realty places around ISU, however, I'm just not sure they would make the grade if they were not renting to 19-21 year olds. I was just visiting Normal this weekend and some friends and I drove around and looked at some of the places we stayed in when we were in school- and yikes. In such disrepair. I mean- some of the places didn't look like they'd even had a pain job in the last 10 years. I really wish that I could leave less than one star for this company. While I understand that they have a high volume of tenants and a huge market share in the student apartment space, there is no excuse for the lack of respect and professionalism in relation to their student tenants. It is nearly impossible to get into contact with them (regarding tenant issues such as account charges), I would call for days trying to inquire about a service charge on my account (weeks to get an itemized receipt for the work done). Leaving a voice-mail is useless, do not expect a callback. If, in a rare instance, I ever got in touch with the accounts department, they are rude, disrespectful, and completely not helpful. This company will overcharge you for anything they possibly can and maximize charging most of your security deposit at move-out. For example, my roommates and I got charged over $300 for "broken shelf" and "cracked frames" in the fridge. The mentioned were already damaged at move-in, but it was an oversight on our part to not note it because we didn't even think to. If the company is so fast to charge for those damages at move-out, it should warn tenants to note every little broken thing at move-in. If they are charging a cleaning fee, they should actually clean the apartment before move-in. Point is, the apartments are in no way, shape, or form, "deeply cleaned" or "damage-free" for you when you move-in but you should expect to be charged for them to be in that condition for the next tenants! The student apartment market at ISU is an oligopoly, and Young America has no issue taking advantage of that. read more

Nope, was told "We are independent of the university and at this time since our tenants still have full use of their apartments. When you call or visit the office their front desk is staffed by students. I commend them for employing students, however they are not trained well and provide poor service. Additionally, Young America uses an online portal to facilitate their payments, but they have no access to this system. If there is an error in billing or anything they will tell you they have no access to your funds and basically tell you "too bad so sad." They have poor business practices and have no place handling anyone's living situation let alone someone's money. First off apartment was filthy when I first moved in, found a bloody napkin behind the desk. My roommate found a used condom under his bed. How is this acceptable?!? I pay them rent every month and this is how they treat me? Why does the county allow this? They try and have you also sign a whole year ahead of time, and act like you won't be able to find any other apartments. Don't fall for it, I one year signed on to a place a week before classes started. (So there are places...) If you are ever late with a payment for any reason (I don't know for something like having to fix your car?), they send you emails threatening to send you to collections. Young America is a monopoly in Blo No. There apartments are overpriced for the low quality amenities. Each month they email your utility bill to each person split evenly. One month each roommate was charged $200 in utilities, $150 of that in water. That was over the summer when no one was living there and no lights or water was left on. We have been trying to get this fixed since September yet they are not helpful. They gave us a 50 refund to "fix" this, yet we were still being charged 150 for that two week period. When you call for help they tell you they only deal with utilities over email and rarely respond to your email. For the month of April and May no one lived there for more than a few days because of covid 19. Yet we were charged the same amount in utilities for the month of January when all roommates were living there full time. The utilities is a scam and YA preys on clueless college kids who do not pay attention to their utility bills. On top of that, they supplied us a cheap couch that broke when my roommate sat down. The maintenance man told us we won't be charged because the couches are made poorly, yet we were still charged for this. This is the worst housing company on campus. I have dealt with management and customer service more than I ever have before in terms of this company. The Big White House on Broadway is one of their highlighted locations and when I moved in I was sick for three months from dust collection in the vents that needed to be changed months ago. I hired a maid thinking the apartment was just dirty until she wiped off a vent that had black chunks falling off of it. I refuse to let my friends sign with Young America or anyone I know. Young America realty is the premier slumlord of Normal. They do an ok job of power renting apartments to students, but there processes are deeply flawed and serve them only. They have move out day and move in day on the same day, so many of the apartments are never cleaned. For several years i had to go in and clean kitchens and bathrooms that had not been cleaned all year. They don't even clean the carpets and the appliances rarely work well. They charged my son for extra electrical usage because the dryer in his apartment was old and overused because it wasn't drying... To try and get service takes an act of God. I don't see why McClean County doesn't shut them down or at least fine them for improprieties. Maybe they should bother themselves to check on them. Its like the great college shakedown.
