They employ young tutors that have just finished high school so whatever is being thought in text books if fresh for the tutors to remember how to do the work and teach your child. La Crescenta schools are very tough, all the kids are attending some kind of after school program to meet and exceed expectations of the teachers. If you were like myself and works all day and then has to come home and go over home work with your kids then i would suggest you go with Yail. They help in group and one on one environments to make sure your child knows the work and gets their homework done without ever getting frustrated like i would get trying to help my child understand.

So when it was my daughter's turn I knew what to expect & I thought I knew the staff well. Mr. Alan did assessment test on my 5 year old daughter and told me that I should change her time to different days since he will have more individualized time to 'work' with her. I had to switch around my older kids schedule & hire nanny to accommodate to those days to fit our crazy drop off and pick ups for all 3 of my kids. The first day, He worked with her for full 1 hour for both math & reading. She came home happy & she did her timed homework and it was very easy for her to finish all 3 packets daily. Second session, my nanny took her to the center & was told to not leave the center because my daughter will be done in 20 minutes instead of a full 1hr. My nanny then called me to confirm this time since she was supposed to go pick up my other child and was expecting to pick up my daughter after 1hr. I then called the center to ask why they are cutting my daughter's time short. Mr. Alan then told me that she is too young for 1 hr. (but my boys started at even younger age and was able to do it for 1hr?) Also, she didn't have any problem sitting through 1hr on the first session. When I asked why he failed to tell me that he might cut her time short before we signed her up & allowed for automatic payment, he then said (these are his exact words) "your card isn't charged yet you don't have to continue if you don't like this" I asked "you told me it was for 1hr? how do you justify paying $360/month to have 20 minutes of tutoring? He then said "I'm not a daycare, if you need a place to drop off the kids for 1hr this is not it" At this point, I'm shocked at how quickly he dismissed my daughter & I. He was saying that she wasn't able to sit through more than 30 minutes and I should pick her up now if I had issue with him cutting her session short! When I returned back I asked the front desk girl to see if my daughter was being disruptive and she replied no. I asked my daughter if she had gotten up or cried or behaved in any ways she said no. My daughter did tell me that there was a sad boy that Mr. Alan had to work with and she was waiting for the teacher. I'm left wondering if he had more students than he can handle that day. If so, why did he even suggest that I sign her up on those days? Promising me of more focused time for my daughter. Or did he think that my nanny wouldn't let me know of these short reduced time? Surely, he didn't cut her time short when I was the person to drop her off. Did he think that my nanny wouldn't care to tell me? I'm really turned off by his "I'm not a daycare" comment. Yes, Kumon is not a daycare.. I didn't treat like one...but you're charging $$$ to teach the kid how to sit still & grow their learning stamina. It's a tutoring center which you pay for their TIME. I even suggested if he can split up those hour into two separate 30 min sessions and he replied no! lol Facts: before enrollment he promised 1hr. My boys who were even younger sat through 1hr few years ago. He taught my daughter for 1 hr when I dropped her off. He taught my daughter 20 minutes when my nanny dropped her off. (How did he even predict that she was not going to be focused just few minutes into her session?!? Hmmm can he predict future??!!) Owner is basically telling me to leave if I'm not okay with paying $360 for 20 minutes instead of promised 1 hr. He can easily point the fingers to a child and say she's not ready but still charge you for full prices. If the issue was the limited concentrated time.. then why can't he divide up into 30 minutes sessions? I ended up giving my daughter worksheets to solve just to time her 'focused' time & it was over 1 hr. Maybe I should start my own tutoring center :) I lived in this community long enough with lots of friends & neighbors to be honest & write everything truthfully as it happened. Mr. Alan is soft spoken & seemingly gentle & nice.. but I find him two faced and shady with soft voice. Make your own decision!

Starting with outcomes: I got into all of my reach schools & my cousin (applying this year) is knocking out target/reach schools by the day. Of course, results never paint the entire picture, so I'd like to highlight a few behind-the-scenes aspects of their approach that I believe are quite conducive to great application delivery. 1. Crafting an authentic application. Every word on my application contributed to an accurate picture of who I am. Not once did I get the impression that Albert & Bryan were trying to fit me into a "template" of the perfect candidate (as a significant number of college applications guides tend to do). Their primary role was extracting notable points about my experiences and helping me with synthesizing/packaging them into compelling and genuine stories. Authenticity is one of the key characteristics of engaging college essay writing, yet it is often one of the most overlooked. Albert & Bryan know this, a fact that is reflected in their guiding principle: "If we anonymously drop your essays in the middle of the street and your best friends pick it up, they will immediately think of you. If strangers pick it up, they will feel as if they have already met you." I certainly believe that we accomplished this by the conclusion of the process. 2. Storytelling expertise. To put plainly, they are great storytellers. Albert & Bryan teach storytelling techniques that I haven't encountered anywhere else. Short, choppy phrases to convey excitement and thrill; sentence cadence to amplify any message you are trying to get across; sustaining a metaphor to create cohesiveness and make the essay a better read- a few of many techniques that I employ to this day. Telling a good story is a fundamental skill of any capable writer, one that is especially critical when trying to encompass your entire character in a few pages of paper. 3. Commitment to their students' success. Albert & Bryan had many other clients while I was there, yet they somehow made it feel as though I was their only student. They reviewed each completed application with the utmost care. I got emails from them at all hours of the day/night, pointing out the slightest of details (deviation in format, potential ambiguity, minor discordance in information) that I somehow overlooked. Every time I needed their help, they found a way to clear up a time slot. I've heard of instances where they devoted their entire night *after closing hours* to work on a mentee's last-minute submission. It goes to show how much they are willing to do to ensure that their students are supported. 4. Staying well-informed. They go to conferences every few months to keep up to date, not just with what application reviewers want to know from their applicants, but also general trends in what types of individuals thrive at which places. This- along with the personal network & bank of experiences that they built over years of being in the industry- means that they had well-informed and nuanced responses to any inquiry I had about the application process or the universities themselves. It's difficult to find guidance of this quality, especially for a process as convoluted as applying for college. Albert & Bryan's service is a gem in the space.
