I cannot speak highly enough of this wonderful team of midwives! From start to finish, they provided a level of care that went far beyond my expectations. You can tell they truly love what they do, their passion and compassion shine through in every interaction. I did not have any significant problems with my first birth, which was at a hospital, but wanted to have another unmedicated birth and therefore was seeking an environment particularly conducive to and supportive of my goals. That being said, I was on the fence about having a home birth, as it seemed like such a radical notion. Still, I decided having more information wouldn't hurt, leading me to interview several local midwives. While all were great, being a bit anxious about home birth to begin with, Paula's many years (and thousands of babies!) of experience is what sold me. Additionally, having done some reading, I concluded home birth is relatively safe for women with uncomplicated medical histories. Further, midwives have the tools, equipment, knowledge, and medications to address most the common complications for mother and baby during labor and delivery. I asked Paula and Arianna many "what if" questions, e.g. common complications, emergencies, hospital transfers, need for baby resuscitation, etc., and none went unanswered. The experience with Paula and her team (which includes Arianna and Anissa) has been wonderful from beginning to end, even with many hiccups along the way. I continued to see my OB during my pregnancy (did co-care), and was at one point diagnosed with IUGR, which later turned out to be a non-issue, after my due date was adjusted. Later, I was being watched for preeclampsia, and had a couple of visits to the hospital for additional testing, which after all was settled, also turned out not to be an issue Finally, I was being monitored for gestational hypertension, which also eventually resolved. In hindsight, much of this was likely due to stress I was experiencing from my father's illness and death, but there were a lot of ups and downs, and I had at one point pretty much abandoned the idea of a home birth due to these risk factors. However, Paula (fortunately!) encouraged me to stay in touch, and keep coming to visits, just in case things turned around, and that was the best decision ever. After all the dust was cleared, I was after all, in a good state for a home birth, and we were able to proceed as originally planned. The birth itself was as positive and supportive of an experience as could be. I am not one of those women who is going to wax poetic about how magical and peaceful it was, because I felt neither - it was intense and crazy. But in the hands of this midwife team, everything went swimmingly. Their confidence in their abilities gave me confidence (also true of prenatal and postnatal care). Everything that could go right, did; nothing that could have gone wrong did. It was amazing to climb into my own bed after giving birth, and eat a plate of eggs and bacon cooked up by my husband. Another bonus I hadn't been fully aware of when signing up for a home birth with Paula, Arianna, and Anissa was that the midwifery model focuses not just on mom or baby, but both. They are specialists in both areas! They came to my house for two follow-up visits on baby and mama, so there was no need to leave the house for OB/Ped visits in the early days. Such a great group of ladies. I knew I wanted a home birth for a long time, and was so happy when my husband (reluctantly) got on board when we got pregnant. I loved how much experience Paula had and got along great with the entire team. I am so glad I chose them and I looked forward to all of my pre and post natal visits. Even though my birth wasn't the magickal smooth water birth I had envisioned, I felt safe, supported, and in very competent hands. I had to have a couple of interventions, and I knew that the midwives wouldn't have suggested them unless they thought they were absolutely necessary, so I felt very open to them, whereas in a hospital I may have been more skeptical. It's nice knowing your birth team has you and your baby's best in mind and knowing you won't have to fight them in those surreal moments. I felt very respected and never pushed to do anything. Everything was a suggestion and I felt no pressure, only urgency when it was truly necessary. VBAC success because of Paula and Ariana! I will always be grateful for them! I came to Paula's group for my second pregnancy after having a C-section. I had planned on having a home birth with my first but never went into labor at 42wks and ended up with a C-section . With my second pregnancy, I wanted a home birth so bad but was nervous it would end the same way. While meeting with Paula for the first time, she welcomed me with so much love, respect and confidence that things were going to go differently. And they did-I truly believe because of her experience, homeopathy and bedside manner. Prenatal care with each of the midwives was great. Everyone has their own strengths and they seem to fit well with one another-care never felt disjointed. They did a good job educating about what my treatment options were in an unbiased, supportive manner. One pleasant surprise during my care was homeopathy. Paula had homeopathic recommendations for many of the pregnancy discomforts and I feel like they really helped. One of my favorites was her "happy birthday" tincture and "after birth"tincture. The happy birthday tincture really prepped my body for labor-my first labor was 30hrs. My second labor was less than 2hrs...need I say anymore?! The afterbirth helped me a lot with after pains and mood. Arianna and Paula were the 2 midwives on during my birth. My labor was fast and furious but they made it just in time. They stayed calm and set up efficiently. While pushing, Paula identified that my baby had shoulder dystocia within seconds. They got me out of the tub quickly without creating worry, repositioned my pelvis and my baby was out within a push. They empowered and encouraged me during my whole labor, and cared for me so well afterwards. Paula kissed my forehead while feeding me a meal in my bed while I fed my baby for the first time-both midwives love their work! The combo of my home birth and having an amazing team made my postpartum experience a breeze. I felt like myself within a few days and had little to no pain. I had the pleasure of having my homebirth and receiving prenatal care with Arianna and Olivia throughout my pregnancy (second baby, first was OB/GYN care and hospital birth). An experience I will forever be grateful for. The care received by these ladies is tenfold what I experienced from my first birth, as they not only became true friends throughout this journey, but are women who are just so intelligent and expertly trained in the field of birth and made me feel so safe and comfortable during mine. My experience with Paula and Arianna was exceptional and I would highly recommend their services to any mama looking for midwifery care! I was about 33 weeks pregnant when I contacted Paula and her team to take over my care. I had been planning on delivering in a hospital with my OB overseeing my prenatal care, but when Covid hit mid-March, I decided to avoid the hospital and give birth at a local birth center (Babies in Bloom). I reached out to Paula and within the hour, she returned my call and I felt a connection immediately. Right off the bat, she made me feel extremely comfortable in her care. I wasn't able to meet her in person, due to Covid precautions, but she made herself available through Google hangouts and I was able to contact her with any questions I had throughout the remainder of my pregnancy. She is experienced and knowledgeable, caring and personable, and really takes the time to answer questions and calm concerns. This was my third pregnancy and this experience was much different than my previous two deliveries. I had my first two babies in a hospital and this one at Babies in Bloom. The difference in the two approaches was like night and day. My experience with Paula and her team was just as relaxing as delivering a baby can be :). I may not have felt relaxed at the time, but in hindsight, it was a serene and memorable experience. I remember every minute of this delivery, including the pain during the delivery and the euphoria of holding my baby girl so very clearly. With my first two deliveries, I barely remember the process. Paula and her team made me feel in control of the process. They provided a tranquil atmosphere and made me feel invincible during my delivery. I loved the non-invasive nature of the delivery and post-birth experience. In terms of safety precautions during the pandemic, I felt extremely safe throughout the process. I still felt like I was getting exceptional care during our Zoom appointments, and when we did meet in person, safety protocol was manageable to follow. You truly cannot choose a better midwife team for your home birth. My husband was a bit skeptical about having a home birth but after our first appt with Paula and her team, he said "Ok. Now I'm in." The level of time and care they took with us at each visit was so reassuring, especially for first time parents. We also love that they can be reached through google chat during the weekday and would always respond in less than 24 hours (usually within a few hours, though, if they're not in a birth). Any question or concern I had could be answered quickly and I wouldn't have to wait days like I did at my other doctor. I am now 4.5 weeks postpartum and they've continued to help me immensely with every curveball this postpartum period has thrown us! They truly make you feel like you're their only client, which is absolutely priceless during such a life changing and vulnerable time. I'm honestly a bit sad my final postpartum visit is coming up because I enjoy seeing them them so much! Now to the birthing day. As a first time mama, we all expected my birth to be at least 8 hours but our kiddo surprised us with a 4 hour labor (only 2 hours of active labor). Paula raced over as fast as humanly possible and discovered that my baby was breech (he had been in the perfect head down position up until his birth day). Paula took all precautions nececssary and called the paramedics but since my baby was coming so fast, she delivered him breech. Her 46 years of experience are unparalleled and I consistently felt calm during the birth because I knew she would get my baby out safely, despite the circumstanaces. Because of her (and Arianna), I was still able to get my dream home birth and deliver a beautiful, healthy baby. My first two births were in Utah with a midwife that I absolutely love and I was very nervous about having a baby with someone new. We honestly considered moving back to Utah for my pregnancy but after several people recommended Paula to me and I talked to her I knew I found the right person for me. Paula is warm and kind. She is knowledgeable and has what I like to call "midwife wisdom" meaning that she is very intuitive. She is incredible and so is her team! My prenatal care was great and I never felt rushed at any appointment. When they came to my home to do a visit, near the end of my pregnancy, they included my older two children and it was so fun for our entire family. My first birth was a c-section due to P-Prom at 35 weeks. There was an attempted induction for a couple of days but my body did not take. When I got pregnant again a couple of years later, I wanted to try a natural birth outside of the hospital. I found Paula and her team on Yelp, and after 1 interview knew this was my team. The team is very responsive and supportive. Prenatal care is simple and they listen. I had progesterone shots throughout my pregnancy to prevent pprom again but other than that had a pretty uncomplicated pregnancy. My mucous plug and water broke around 39 weeks. Paula was able to advise on which supplements to take at the end of pregnancy, for labor and for postpartum care. For someone who didn't even have 1 contraction in my first pregnancy when I was induced, I sure went into labor this time around! I had a quick 6 hour labor and brought my beautiful boy into this world in the comfort of our own home. This is a long over-due, but much deserved, review about the amazing Paula & Haley. I met Paula & Haley over two years ago when I began my search for a midwife for my first pregnancy. In that initial meeting, I instantly knew that they were the perfect fit for my family and I, and all this time since, it is one of the best decisions I have ever made. They feel like a part of our family now, and they are my midwives for life. I could speak to the excellent care they provided my child and myself during pregnancy, birth and postpartum, but given that is what most have already commented on, I wanted to focus on my experience having midwives take care of my well woman visit compared with my prior experiences with an OB-GYN. When Paula noted that I was due for a well woman exam and told me that they could do it for me, I, of course, said yes. I was open to this because of the positive experiences I had with our prenatal and postpartum exams, but it wasn't until I actually experienced it that I realized how low our standards can be when it comes to having our bodies examined by health professionals. Any time Haley or Paula would have to touch my body, whether it be my arm or my pelvic area, they would ask permission to touch me. It was then I realized I had NEVER been asked that by my doctors in the past. I didn't know how much it would make a difference in my comfort level, and overall experience. As with my prenatal and postpartum exams with Paula & Haley, the well woman visit was comprehensive and covered all the standard things you expect at a PCP or OB-GYN's office, but went above and beyond. They explained everything they were doing and why. They asked me questions about my health, lifestyle, and mood. Most importantly, they LISTENED and HEARD me and my concerns. They gave me choices and discussed what could be done based on what my needs were. I learned more in my one well woman visit about my body than I ever have in all my years of having well woman exams performed by OB-GYNs. For example, Haley walked me through performing a self breast exam in a way that I understood and have been able to replicate on my own. Of course, I've been shown and read about how to do it before, but something about the way Haley went through it clicked for me. I will NEVER go back to the status quo so long as I have the option. I highly recommend having Paula and Haley as your care providers for well woman exams (and any other services they provide), even if you are not planning on having children any time soon, or are no longer planning to have children. I never thought that these sort of health requirements would be something I look forward to and come out feeling good about myself, but they make the experience a comfortable, positive, warm, and informative one. A home birth was always in my heart, but being AMA - pregnant at 36 and birth at 37, we decided to take the Kasier route for prenatal care just to be on the "safe side". Now I know the safe side would have been to start our prenatal care on day 1 with Paula's Midwifery. I will spare you the rant about Kaiser. They did the best They could do with the system they have created, but that system was not up to our standards. However, our standards were met and exceeded by Paula's midwifery. We left every appointment feeling confident, supported, and loved. Paula and Ariana are extremely informative and give you all the options to make the best decision for your family. They were readily available to answer any questions we had throughout the pregnancy and postpartum. Their care goes above and beyond the call of duty. I cried on our last appointment. When I found out I was pregnant with my third child I starting calling and interviewing midwives. The name Paula kept coming up. I was planning my third natural birth and for some reason, this pregnancy I needed more. I was looking for someone confident, mothering, sweet, strong and amazing! After I interviewed three midwives who were very nice, I called Paula and she was AMAZING! I have never felt so supported and loved in my whole life. Every woman deserves that kind of care. I had used two different midwife teams for my other births and I wish I would have had her from the start! She has two assistants who are thorough and kind also. Rachel was able to do placenta encapulating for me as well. As I approched 42 weeks Paula starting helping me gently induce labor. Since I live in San Clemente and my baby decided to come on Memorial Day, Paula, Rachel and Lauren came to my house extra early to avoid any issues with traffic. Paula was my rock, I could look to her during my labor and when I was feeling discouraged or even a tiny bit scared and she lifted me up. They were able to feel a lip on my cervix which wasnt dilating and they immediately put me in a position which made my baby literaly slide right past my cervix. It was amazing! My sweet baby was born about 2 minutes later so gently. Paula was able to treat a few issues I had during my pregnancy homeopathically. I suffered from terrible vuvlar varicosities that no OBGYN or other midwife ever even acknowledged. They were so painful, I'm sad that I had to suffer through my first two pregnancies. I did't believe that homeopathy could cure something so extreme and painful! I have to admit that I wasnt sure about how Lauren would be at my birth bc she seemed so reserved. I will say that she is in her element when it comes to birth and labor, she really shined and got involved. I love all three of them so much, I feel like I gained three friends in my life that I will never forget. I love them. It is sad that I dont get to see them as much! Paula and her team provide a truly outstanding level of care for both mom and baby. There is no one else I would trust to see my baby safely into the world. When I was pregnant with my first child, we used a CNM in a hospital setting. This proved to be a disappointing experience (to say the least) where the midwife focused on numbers on a screen rather than on my baby and I as people, to the point where our health was put in jeopardy. For my second baby, I knew we needed a different approach. We needed someone who would get to know us as whole people, and would make choices informed by the complete picture of our health. I wanted someone who would listen to and support me, and respect my bodily autonomy, and that had the knowledge and experience to provide excellent advice. I wanted care based on evidence, not anecdotes. I feel so lucky we found Paula. She met with me for an hour, every other week, throughout my entire pregnancy, not to mention being available on the phone and by email. She wanted the whole picture of my health, including what I ate, how I exercised, and what stressful issues I might be dealing with in my life. She was prepared, conscientious, thorough, informed, available, and fun, and she made sure she had ALL the information she needed to evaluate our health situation and make the correct recommendations. We met Paula when I found out I was gestational diabetic. Not only are Paula and Haley amazing care providers, I very much consider them a part of our growing family. We were extremely lucky to meet Paula and to start midwife care with her at 34 weeks so that we could have the natural birth experience we had hoped for. We only wish we would have started with her earlier! From day one, Paula treated us like family. Each midwife visit was filled with care, compassion, and excitement.
