This gym is super basic and constantly full. It has TVs over the cardio equipment, but with no sound or channel changing options. Its a nice mix of women and men, but again, super full, and very basic. read more

I mean she is very friendly and all but I didn't sign up for this, i signed up for some "good morning D, just stretch and don't break out a sweat". No this was a proper wake up call. A 4* for effort though: the manager/instructor was ever so friendly, it's still a stylish gym, smaller though than on Wibautstraat, and the guy at the counter was also quite helpful and very friendly. (Take notes, angry wibaut birds...) Anyway I guess in the end I did have a proper workout i needed so badly, humbug. I am hoping to have a proper lazy class tomorrow though. Ps here you can wear your skanky tank tops (more perverts at Wibaut maybe?) Oh and maybe i overlooked but it would be great if there was a cleaner and paper cloth in sight to clean those sweaty palm and butt prints (people, sit on your towel, please...)

Overall it is an okay gym for me. I go between 9 am and 12 pm. I have my own exercise routine, so I opted out from the premium plan that has a trainer session once every 6 weeks. There is a juice bar by the entrance; solarium; plenty of group classes. But there are few things that just makes me say "huh?" - one of them is showers. I have no idea why there are no shower doors? Also why the heck I can not control the water temperature? It runs too cold for me. I do feel miserable every time I take a shower.... :( I do like the core area, would like to see better yoga mats - current one looks like they have been through the war zone.

Always in very spacious buildings, lovingly appointed to look sensibly chic for a gym, visited by a wide mix of people. What I also like is that they renew their equipment and keep the existing equipment in great shape; this particular location seems to have just taken delivery of some new Kinesys cable equipment which is a lot of fun to use for strength training. This gym is situated on the south side of the WTC station, has always had friendly staff when I visited (it does help that I speak Dutch, I think), a quick entry procedure, and nice towel service. You will need €0.30 to pay for the electronic locker, but you do not need to bring a lock. The equipment area is big and ready, and the sauna (Mixed! It's considered normal, so learn not to stare at naked specimens of the opposite gender!) is warm. Enjoy.

The gym itself is very nice and has a lot of equipment and classes. However the saleswoman Noor is…read moreterrible, very flippant, not at all helpful, basically doesn't seem like she wants to do her job at all. Specifically I showed up with a friend who had done a tour the week before and I wanted to use the wellness area. I had a tote bag purse that was obviously not full and she stated that I could not wear a swimsuit, as if I should have come in fully nude (I was in work out clothes) I already knew this and said ok. The website states over and over that this is an all inclusive club, it also mentions towels and robe service which I assumed was included. I wasn't offered during the above conversation to rent a robe or towels. I also wasn't offered a tour of the facilities. I went upstairs to the locker room (that my friend told me where they were not the sales person) and took 10 minutes trying to figure out the lock, when I was finally successful, I wandered around trying to locate towels and robes, they weren't there. I went back down the stairs and stood at the front desk so I could ask someone, the first employee didn't really understand what I meant, she was very polite and tried but asked me to wait while she got Noor. I stood out there another couple minutes and eventually Noor moseyed out with her freshly made cup of coffee (because customers should always wait for employees to do personal things), I asked for a Robe and Towels, she looked at me like I was an Alien from another planet, so I repeated myself. She notified me that towels and robes could be rented in a very snotty way, didn't offer to rent them to me, didn't tell me what the rental price was. I unfortunately also was very annoyed at this point as she seemed to be going out of her way to be unhelpful and replied that isn't what the website said and also isn't "all inclusive". To be fair the website can be taken both ways but she could've been polite. So I went back to the locker room, grabbed my bag and went back downstairs and sat in the lobby for about 30ish minutes while my friend finished up. We went to join up, she asked how our time was I responded with Terrible, I was ignored. My friend grabbed the paperwork because overall the facility was very nice and we figured we would never have to speak to her again. We sat down to fill out the paperwork and after about 15 minutes she came back over and in what I'm sure she thought was a huge display of generosity said for that this 1 time only she could give us free robes and towels, keep in mind this was 45 minutes later from when I originally asked for them. I said no I didn't want them, I was hungry and wanted to leave. She then started to offer again and I stated that she should have offered them when I asked. She then told me that it was my fault because I didn't give her a chance to. I guess sitting in the lobby for 30 minutes didn't give her a chance or when we went for the papers 15 minutes before or I dunno offering to rent them to us in the very beginning or being nice instead of rude when I actually asked. We would have happily paid for a robe and towel rental, we would have totally signed up but telling a customer that they are responsible for the employees bad behavior by the employee is a major deal breaker. So they lost 140 eur a month in membership fees.
Before I go ahead and talk a bit about Basic Fit in general, I'll mention what I like about this…read moregym specifically. IT'S 24/7 !!!!!!!!! Just kidding :) that's a lie. Actually, it's 24/4 (but 24/7 sounds so much better). So how does that work? They're open from Monday 8 AM through Friday 10:30 PM when they close for the first time in the week. Then they're open in the weekend from 9 to 4. Fair enough, right? This gym was recently renovated and fitted with lots of brand new black and orange Basic Fit equipment. They have rows of lots of cardio equipment and also plenty of heavy weight stuff for serious people. I was pleasantly surprised by this, although I'm still new to it all, I prefer working with loose weights. They have it all. In the early mornings and late evenings (after 10 PM) it's surprisingly busy! But everyone here, including, nay, especially, the big n' mean looking fellows are super nice and helpful. This is definitely not a gym with an arrogant culture so if you're shy, don't be and set you're worries aside if normal gym hours don't fit your schedule. Just come on over and get fit. If you're a member of the Basic Fit gyms, you're welcome at any of their gyms throughout the Netherlands! And we like that. There's only one membership, the all encompassing membership. They don't have silly things like saunas and fruitbars and bla bla bla. You don't go to the gym to make use of its cafe and have a smoothie while you read the paper at one of their tables! NO! You go there to get RIPPED.. or fit. Basic Fit gyms are without bells and whistles! You can pay the least by paying for the whole year upfront, or pay a tad more and do it monthly (automatic payments) with a one year contract, or pay even a bit more than that to pay monthly without a contract, at all. These are the only three options you have the rest is all-in. They even allow you to lend your card to someone else! As long as you're not working out together at the same time. One card per person at a time. You can, however, invite someone to workout at any Basic Fit for a day at no charge to either of you as an introduction.

I like the electronic wristband system for getting in and out and also for the lockers. There are many many activities to choose from. I only have experience with the lane swim, but there are designated time for women swim, endurance and swim stroke training (I want to check that out), gay swim, and they also have nude swimming. Maybe doing laps in the nude makes you more efficient? Basically, it seems like whatever you are looking for they have it. The cost of a drop in lane swim is EUR 3.80. You can get a pass for 12 for EUR 38, so basically 2 passes free...not a bad deal and seems to be competitive with some of the pools further away. My only issue with this pool is the same issue I have with all pools in Holland....why why why are so many lanes dedicated to breaststroke and leisurely swim?! Where is the pool where all lanes are open to people who are training/freestyle/swim workouts? I'm not a fast swimmer by any means (I am quite). But I would like to be able to do a swim workout in a lane that is not too too slow or too too fast. Why why why are so many people doing the breaststroke?! Truth be told, if you are looking for a pool where you can get some good swimming in (and, leisure swimming, too!) Het Marnix will suit you just fine. You may just end up in a lane with fit Dutch men that are faster than you, but if anything it is a motivator to swim faster :) Enjoy!
