I spent May 1 through May 6 in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center recovering from life-saving aortic valve replacement surgery performed by Nishant Dinesh Patel. Every patient in that cardiac ICU is under Dr. Patel's care, and the hospital staff clearly knows the process involved with follow-up appointments and post-operative imaging. My follow-up appointment with Dr. Patel was scheduled for May 14, and my chest X-ray at the hospital was scheduled one hour before the appointment. Dr. Patel's office is literally across the street from the hospital. Instead of simply contacting Dr. Patel's office to obtain whatever referral paperwork was apparently missing, a hospital employee called me on May 13 and unilaterally moved my chest X-ray appointment to Friday -- the day after my doctor's appointment. That was not only illogical, it showed a complete lack of customer service, common sense, and compassion for a recovering open heart surgery patient. Rather than doing the job they are paid to do and coordinating directly with the physician's office, this employee chose the easier route: push the problem onto the patient recovering from major cardiac surgery. Patients recovering from open heart surgery should not have to fight administrative battles or be forced to correct scheduling problems created by hospital paperwork issues. At a time when stress and elevated blood pressure should be avoided, I was forced to deal with unnecessary aggravation because someone could not be bothered to make a simple phone call to Dr. Patel's office. The medical care I received from the cardiac ICU nurses, rehabilitation staff, and Dr. Patel himself was outstanding and compassionate. Unfortunately, this interaction with hospital administration was the complete opposite. Hospitals need to remember that recovering cardiac patients are human beings, not paperwork files to shuffle around for administrative convenience. During my most recent visit, the intake process (once inside the ER, not the first one that you have, but the one with the actual person who's gonna be treating you) felt extremely rushed, my nurse spent less than 30 seconds with me, and I did not feel properly assessed or heard. I felt very dismissed on multiple occasions and like the nurse wasn't listening to me. Throughout my time there, multiple staff members came across as unfriendly, which made an already stressful situation feel worse. I also observed behavior that felt unprofessional for a medical setting, including staff joking around in a way that was disruptive and did not seem appropriate for the environment. Additionally, I was discharged before I felt ready and before I believed my condition had been adequately addressed or stabilized. When I arrived at the ER, my pain was a 7/10. It only went down to a six ish and is now back up to a seven or eight (several hours after leaving) also, the building seemed to smell like mold or something which is new from the last two times. I was there that I didn't notice up until this visit. I understand that emergency departments can be busy and stressful, and I respect how hard medical staff work. The one good part was that the male nurse I had (I had two- the female nurse was the dismissive one) was very skilled at doing IV, which has been a problem for nurses in the past because I'm a hard stick. However, I left feeling concerned about the level of attention, communication, and professionalism I received during my visits.

Don't ever leave a message for the nurses because they will not call you back. If there are any issues with your billing or insurance (even if you were unaware or it's an issue on the insurances part) the receptionists will rudely announce to the entire waiting room that you are delinquent. I'm pretty sure that violates HIPPA but regardless it's rude and unnecessary. 3. It will take them weeeeeeks to get what ever documentation you need so always plan ahead. I needed a letter for my ESA (emotional support animal) for the airlines and it took me over a month to get it.
