My display at library pre-renovation in late-90s promoting the scrapbooking craze ;)
    Karen C.

I first discovered this library branch back in the late-80s when I moved into the neighborhood to attend Phoenix College and also Ariz State Univ. After graduation, I'd continue to visit this library from time to time to borrow a stack of books and magazines to take home to read, which I continued to do so up until more than a few years ago, when I no longer needed to read them (internet is partly the reason) for my then job and the magazine business had dwindled its volume (party due to the internet). The staff over the years has been steady-when I volunteered for a short time, I got to know some staff members: librarian Kathy, library clerks Lorre and Avian(exact sp?), to name a few. The staff and patrons were also kind to me when I brought in my hearing ear assistance dog, Beau. I even had a display window for the month where I decorated the inside myself with scrapbooking materials that I brought over. The general atmosphere evoked an idyllic feel... ...until recently. The library had undergone a major renovation back in 2000-1 and they held a temporary location @ Chris Town Mall. After moving back to its original location after completion, the atmosphere had changed a bit and some of the staff and even security, became less customer service-oriented. Yet, I loyally stopped by to continue to borrow materials, as well as used their computer (until I acquired a decent laptop and cell phone). I also check out the Culture Pass stand to get free admission to various museums. Since then, up to present day, I only stop by sporadically just to look at some materials to catch up. The neighborhood has changed to, umm, sketchy state and the number of homeless visiting, with a somewhat impersonal staff, and noisy kids have discouraged me from visiting much or staying longer. That's just today all over. Yet, I am appreciative that this library is still in business. It's kept clean. I am uber-bookworm and still love hard copies (the pretty books & smells & hard fonts) ;) I encourage you to keep visiting and supporting your local library. Keep on reading and enriching your brain. Happy reading!

From my view at the back table....just living it up

There was live music, the architect spoke explaining the light and architecture at work for the special hour (12-1). It was beautiful and fascinating to witness. There was also a demonstration of the Washington Printing Press in the Rare Book Room with a special print that day created by library staff. There was also a limited tshirt that day at the Friends Bookstore with a print from the printing press designed by library staff. Every day here is a special day, but today was an extra special day. Staff is always ready to help, is friendly, and is very knowledgeable - whether it's Adult Services Staff, Youth Services Staff, Circulation Staff, or Municipal Security; everyone is here to help make your experience incredible. There's a first floor with an art gallery, the children's area, the adult fiction area, the checkout area, the accounts desk, the security desk, and the auditorium. The second floor has the computer, printing, faxing, copying, and scanning area, the business area, the arizona room, workforce area, and college depot. I loved the informative display cases on the second floor which held information on filming western movies in Arizona, about Burton Barr - their namesake, and about the architecture of the building. This was a very nice, informative touch. The third floor is administration and is not open to the public. This is where the magic of Phoenix Public Library is planned. This is where the PPL team orders and processes PPL materials, where staff plans programs, marketing, and more! The fourth floor is the teen room, the makerspace, and where the youth services staff plans programs. The fifth floor is the largest reading room in the nation, yes, larger than NYC Central Public Library's reading room! It's an impressive floor and my favorite with those beautiful North, and South views of Phoenix. This floor holds the adult non-fiction collection, and reference collection. Each floor has restrooms, look for signs. Can't find it? Ask the friendly staff at any service desk. Enjoy your visit at an architectural gem, a Phoenix Point of Pride, and at one of the best library's in the nation.

One of the first things I noticed was how spacious the library feels. Everything looked clean and well maintained, which made it a really comfortable place to settle in and focus. There was actually already a line of people waiting outside for the library to open at 1 PM on Sunday, which says a lot about how popular it is. One feature I thought was especially cool is their seed library, where you can pick up seeds to plant your own plants at home. They also offer the usual cultural passes, which is always a great perk with a library card. Speaking of that, I really liked how unique their library card designs are. I was able to sign up for a card today thanks to a very helpful staff member who made the process quick and easy. Inside, there were plenty of tables and outlets almost everywhere, which made it perfect for getting work done. There is also a free charging center where you can charge devices. Parking was also simple. I parked at the Scottsdale Civic Center Garage, which made access really convenient. Overall, I was very happy with my visit today and will definitely be coming back.

My elementary aged kids are big fans of their Wizards of STEAM program on Thursday afternoons, we like to stop in for that and pick up some books while we are there. The app is super useful for placing books on hold, you can place a hold on any book in the PHX library system and pick it up at your preferred location. We've also taken advantage of their cultural passes - they offer free admission for two to a variety of places in the Phoenix and Tucson area (Desert Botanical Gardens, Boyce Thompson Arboretum, PHX Museum of Art to name just a few). Last, but by far my favorite, is the ebook collection. I'm a huge reader and their ebook collection is one of the best I've experienced. I used to pay for an out of state Brooklyn Library card for access to their collection, but the Phoenix collection might be even better. Huge fan of libraries in general and PHX/Agave are top notch.

I saw a book I wanted to read that was available while looking online and went for the one book. I got there and it wasn't on the shelf where it should be. I asked an employee who confirmed the same thing. She went to the back to check their intake. She came back saying she didn't know where the book is and that I can put a hold for it. This is a singular occurrence, but in frustration I would imagine with the technology used in libraries now for finding and coding books, that it would be relatively simple to find a book that is listed as available, but if I'm wrong then let me know.
