Really helped keep my daughter and I engaged in the content. We had a great tour guide who wrote a more in depth book. He was entertaining, kept things moving. The short film is also a good introduction. Even at the end of February, the sun was fierce. Wish we would have brought hats and water. I have forgotten how dry it can be. While it wasn't hot, the sun felt unrelenting. Highly recommend stopping and enjoying the site. A great piece of American history.

Specifically, it includes: (1) the Yuma Crossing Historic Landmark, (2) the Yuma Territorial Prison - very cool; (3) Colorado River State Historic Parks; and (4) 3 miles of riverfront parks, trails and 350 acres of restored wetlands. National Heritage Areas are places where historic, cultural and national resources combine to form cohesive, nationally important landscapes. Yuma is the oldest city established on the Colorado River. Really interesting to learn about the history of Yuma, and the story of the River and its impact on the people and land. Beautiful place to walk and enjoy the River, too.

The park has bathrooms, picnic tables under a large pavilion, a play ground, and a sandy beach. There's even an outdoor shower for cleaning off the sand when you're done. On an August weekday around noon, there were multiple families at the park to lounge and swim. The bridge provides ample shade for sitting on the beach or swimming in the water. The water was clear and looked clean. Some kids had tied a rope swing to the bridge and were swing jumping into the water - so fun! Yuma is HOT and frankly quite ugly, without much to offer the passerby outside of food, fuel, and the prison (also worth a stop!!). Gateway Park is an exception - a beautiful spot and a great break point for the weary traveler. Bring swimsuits - you won't just want to dip your feet in!

There is also a side, smaller area for toddlers with smaller slides, swings, climbing tubes, etc. Along the perimeter there is a traditional zip line and one with a chair. After eating we'd go mini golfing & then ride the go karts. I still remember when they had the batting cages running back in the good old days We visited during a slow day, and as usual, we ordered the sampler and a pizza. The sampler came first, 2 ranch and one marinara sauce in mini cups. The pizza came shortly after and was sat on an upside down plate, which was really odd. They use to put the pizza on a pizza stand before but I'm going to take a guess that convenience was at play here. Might as well set it on the table lol after being served we didn't see our waiter until the check came. It took a while so we decided to go up stairs to the arcade area and play a couple of games and then headed out to the go karts. To no one's surprise, it's still the same go karts as before. Kid's can't ride if they're under 52", considering places like San Diego, it's 48". The guy at the karts was kind enough to let us ride a bit longer than usual. This made it worth while. We didn't mini golf this time and playing in the arcades just wasn't worth it. The Star Wars game is nearly $2 per game. It's insane. The other games you're lucky if they even fully work. You end feeling scammed. You can tell this place is slowly losing its magic and it's because this place is not maintained at all. Not a huge deal but you have to make sure to tell the staff you are taking the drinks outside if you want to mini golf and have your drinks or else they'll complain and tell you that you're not allowed to take the drinks outside. The mini golf course area is missing patches of turf. I can't even remember the last time the speakers or games made noise. This place really needs to be brought back to life.
