One of the most admirable programs the YWCA supports is "Dress for Success", helping women boost their confidence as they enter/re-enter the workforce. I was involved in a similar program in the San Francisco Bay Area; there is universal support for women. Showing support can be manifested in several ways (see the YWCA's website), including attending their Pre-Loved Clothing Sales, with great prices, held once a month. The sales are published on their website, or by signing up for email notifications. Both the quality and quantity of clothing are 'knock your socks off' experience - wonderful donations with proceeds going to the program. The sale is held on the 2nd floor Gym from 10-5; payment is with cash or credit card...BYOBag. Parking can be a bit of a challenge...meter on the street or across the street in the Iolani Palace paid-for-parking lot. Either way, plan on spending at least an hour at the sale - everything is neatly laid out, sorted, and organized...way to go, YWCA! read more

I haven't been a member very long but I have enjoyed going to the aqua fit classes led by Derrick Kam, who not only leads us with water exercises using water bar bells but provides us with fun music to sing along with as we move through our exercises. In addition, I use the gym on the second floor. You have to book your time so there's no waiting to use equipment. The place is kept clean but the mats could be replaced. NOTE: The YWCA's Health & Fitness programs will be ending as of March 31, 2024 due to low usage and a reduction in membership since COVID. Folks who work downtown used to use this facility at lunch but since then, most have not returned. The Board has decided to end these essential programs without input from the membership. Some of us in the aqua fit class have spoken to the Governor and Speaker of the House about our plight and KHON-2 covered us on TV. We won't go down without trying to save these essential programs first. read more

Annual Benefit Clothing Sale 2020 - November 18 and 19, 2020 from 10am to 2pm... If you are looking for great deals, come to the YWCA (Young Women's Christian Association) on Richards Street, located across from Iolani Palace. This YWCA is situated between the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) and Alii Place. Metered street parking is along Richards Street and King Street and even at the nearby Post Office. On Sundays, metered street parking is free!!! I first learned about the Annual Benefit Clothing Sale from Facebook. I marked my calendar, then saw an Instagram contest, so, I entered and won $20 worth of items. At $5 per piece, I was able to select 4 things for free! Mahalo!!! I actually went at 10am on the first day of the sale (11-18-20). The line to get in was rather long, so, I went to lunch and came back. I strolled right in at 1pm and had an hour to shop before they closed at 2pm. There were bargains on shoes, purses, tote bags, and clothing. I saw name brands such as Christian Dior, Ann Klein, Ralph Lauren, etc. Some clothing still had tags on them, indicating that they were never worn! For sure, I will return again next year. The YWCA has great programs such as the Dress For Success and job training for those entering the work force. As a child, my mom enrolled me in classes like cooking, swimming, and sewing. When I was older, I took a hula class and even did aerobics since I worked in downtown at the time! Ahhh... Such happy memories! Group exercise program closed abruptly at the end of March 2024 with notice given to members only in January. Poor management and lack of honesty and financial transparency by Board of Directors and paid management staff. It didn't have to be this way. So disappointing. For decades, it was a neighborhood gathering place for many years and an invaluable fitness resource for seniors - not anymore. You can't even sit in the lobby anymore, they took away the tables and chairs. read more

I remember coming here to take dance lessons during middle school, and of course, the architecture here has always fascinated me. A hundred years later (or what seems that way now that I'm much older), the YWCA Laniakea has evolved with the needs of the community and offers so much more. We got a behind the scenes look at some of the cool things going on, such as: * the Patsy T. Mink Center for Leadership and Development offers counseling and resources to help women succeed as entrepreneurs and small business owners * the fitness center offers a myriad of classes including barre (shades of my ballet lessons here come to mind!) as well as use of various fitness machines in an air conditioned room and the 84 degree pool perfect for clients who have special needs * dress for success helps women in transition (eg, from incarceration back into society) with clothing, shoes, accessories, toiletries and makeup as well as interview training and resume writing I was mostly impressed with the passion and commitment of the organization's leadership and staff to help women become all that they can be whether it is through physical transformation (health and wellness) or advancing their careers. In this day and age, the mission to "Eliminate Racism, Empowering Women" resonates even louder than when the organization was founded a hundred years ago. The facility at first appearance seems a bit dated but it is clean and efforts to maintain it are probably based on membership fees and donations. They can always use volunteers, as well as new/gently used career clothing (women and men), new female undergarments and bras, jewelry for interview outfits, unused makeup, and of course financial contributions. I am so happy that this YWCA on Richards Street accepts donations for working women! I have donated alot of my dresses, shoes, handbags for their Dress for Success Program. Their Success for Women program have monthly sales for women who are getting back in the workforce needing professional work attire! I also understand that many have found good buys that costs as little as $5! I know i have donated many brand named dresses and designer evening wear throughout the years! I haven't hit the gym in a hot minute. And I realized I was getting a little tubby and decided to use my employer's Active & Fit Program as an incentive to get back into shape. Active & Fit will reimburse your fees ($200 in my case) when you work out for 30 minutes for 45 days. Note: this is per calendar year. That means you need to complete this requirement by 12/31 to qualify for reimbursement. I got a bit turned around at YWCA, but it's ok. I eventually found the Fitness Center. And I was eyeing the pool like crazy. I plan on participating in the AquaFit Classes, free swim, or laps, sounds really appealing. I'm definitely a water person. Today I just did a couple miles on a stationary bike. I'll try the stair master tomorrow. read more

My review will be based on a phone call I made. I simply just called about how to send flowers to my Aunt in the building. I wanted to send my Aunt a thank you bouquet of flowers for our stay in Hawaii. The woman who answered (possibly receptionist) was very pleasant and very informative. She told me the department where my Aunt worked in and the address I can send it to. Very detailed and helpful. Since Kaiser offers a free gym membership for those willing to visit a minimum number of times per year, I figured I should make the effort to be less of a lazy pants. After researching several gyms, deciding that I wanted to find a place that wasn't going to be packed 24/7, I discovered the YWCA would be a good option. The building is absolutely gorgeous and there are several workout areas that offer all sorts of classes. There is a large, heated pool that offers time for laps, free swim, and swimming lessons. Classes take place either in the gym or in room 201. The gym is also available for basketball, although from what I've observed, only the guys play. (I'm sure they would be open to a woman playing, but it seems to be mostly men on their lunch break.) The classes are for all ability levels, from high-intensity CrossFit-like sessions to low-impact chair yoga. Most of the high-intensity classes are offered very early in the morning (before 7) or after work (after 4). Sometimes they will offer lunchtime classes, too. They post the monthly class schedules online, but you can also take a printed sheet home with you. Note that the entire YWCA facility is closed on Saturdays, so if you are a weekend workout warrior, this may not be the option for you. They also have a room with weights, treadmills, recumbent bikes, stairclimbers, etc. Some of the equipment in the room is rather old. They have one really nice treadmill and one really nice bike, but the others are really basic. Of course, everyone wants the better equipment, so it's a roll of the dice for what you'll be able to get. If you plan to work out at the Y, be aware that you are probably going to be paying for parking. There is very limited metered parking right outside the Y that's free before 7AM or on Sundays/holidays. There is also parking at Iolani Palace ($1/hr) or at the surrounding parking garages, like Ali'i Place. During prime times (like lunchtime), parking can be sparse. The bus is also a good option, since there are several major transit points right around the Y. In all, the YWCA is a good option for a gym, especially if you are taking advantage of your Kaiser membership benefit. read more

Recently went to a beautiful wedding here and was surprised with the ambiance of the place. The wedding was in the center court and I felt like I was in a little village in Italy. Our dinner was also served in the center court which the staff turned into a beautiful reception. Caf'e Julia catered the dinner and the food was delicious. The pupu's were well-prepared and I loved the Short ribs which were very tender and tasty. I've been here before, but never thought about having a wedding or a reception here. But the staff did an amazing job with the transformation. It didn't even resemble the Y. Great job because everyone had a wonderful time in the beautiful surroundings and great food. There isn't much parking and downtown parking can cost a lot. Fortunately the wedding was on a holiday and street parking was FREE. read more

Review for Wedding Event: Just attended a wedding at Laniakea YWCA and it was the perfect venue for a middle size and price wedding. There are lots of advantages to this having your wedding at this beautiful historic building. I'm not an expert on wedding planning, but just like everyone else, I've been to a few over the years. To me high end weddings at HHV, Royal Hawaiian or Ihilani Ko Olina Resort are great. If you can afford it, go for the best and don't hold back. If all you desire is a simple wedding on the beach, then that don't let any one try to convince you otherwise. Follow your heart! But, for almost everyone else, a wedding must be carefully planned and, just as importantly, budgeted. This is where Laniakea shines. This place is really worth looking at. Venue: Indoor/Outdoor court yard area with two dining rooms available. Private to the max and flexible to allow you to do things your way. Chairs were set up for the wedding ceremony out in the courtyard and taken down after to allow for dancing and a band later on. First dining room (Cafe Julia) was used as reception/gift receiving area and for drinks and pupus pre-dinner. Outdoor tables were also arranged to allow for maximum socialization and activities like a photo booth pre-dinner. A program and dinner was served in the second air-conditioned dining room (Elizabeth Fuller Ballroom). As a guest I was pleased and it seemed like everyone else was happy with the food and drinks and service. Heard no complaints at all. Weddings: Weddings always contain a few common elements like a ceremony exchanging rings and vows. But the rest of it is a blank slate. This wedding was lots of fun for everyone. People were more into socializing than dancing though. The good thing was that there were lots of areas for people to gather and talk and laugh and move around and mingle. Weather: This has been a hot summer. Courtyard was shaded, cool and pleasant at 4:30 pm. Was not hot at all. This venue is stunning, and a perfect hideout downtown. The gym facility is great and is an amazing deal for students on a budget. The pool is stunning and always makes me long for days when women wore one piece suits and crossed their legs. The classes offered as part of the wellness program are amazing. Cafe Julia is a great spot for casual or formal lunches and offers catering services. For the last few years they have really grown their events side and I wouldn't hesitate to hold my wedding here! I have donated women clothes for "Dress for Success" for about 20 years. I love clothes and felt it was always important to be well groomed not only in a working environment but in any venue. Therefore, the clothing that I donated for "Dress for Success," had to be clean, gently used, hung on hangers and encased in plastic bags. My goal was to deliver them ready-for-the- showroom or a sale rack. It didn't have to be expensive and/or couture clothing -- just something that a woman would want to wear in an appropriate setting. I love Julia Morgan's design, the first woman to be admitted to the architecture program in Paris, and the first woman architect licensed in California. Review for YWCA Fuller Hall: It was a challenge searching for a venue that was within my budget. Five weeks before the event date for my little sister's graduation party, it finally clicked... why not inquire about venue rental at YWCA? Afterall, I've held numerous work events in this particular location. Immediately, I set up a site visit to check out the venue, specifically Fuller Hall (even though I've been here before). I have to admit that party planning was smooth sailiing since my first initial email up to the last second of the event. I worked mainly with Event Sales Manager Kelii, who represents the company well. Kelii is easy to work with, very accommodating and his response rate is rocket fast. We settled with twelve round tables and it still allowed ample space for dj booth, photo booth, 16' x 6' stage/riser, refreshment table, pupus table, dessert table, buffet line and of course, checkin table. I believe that the addition of the continuous live feed of our event hashtag on big screen contributed to the ambience of the party. Kelli along with GM Emerson stayed throughout the event to make sure everything ran smoothly. The only problem I encountered was the technical difficulty with the audio of the slideshow video. It worked during sound check but no luck when the time came to present the video. No sweat... our dj saved the night! Aside from the small hiccup... I can't express enough how I grateful I am for everything! I received many great compliments from our guests about the location, the decor and of course, the food! Thank you YWCA for your exceptional service and for allowing us to book your beautiful venue! I kind of wish I could go back in time and have my high school graduation party here instead! I am not a member of YWCA so I can't base this review on membership perks. I came here for a special event, held in the Fuller wing. Without this event I would never have known this "wing" existed. Enter through the front door, head straight past the pool and turn right and there you have the Fuller wing. It's a good size room to hold banquets (and wedding reception or any special events - can the YWCA allow wedding receptions here?). The room is air conditioned. The building is kind of old and it shows in the wooden windows, that if opened, would look over the pool. During the event, the doors kept rattling and was quite distracting. All in all, not a bad place. But definitely not a go-to place to hang out. If another event is held here that I want to attend, you can bet I'll be back. But not because I want to be there, but have to because of the event. read more

I've attended a few events at the Laniakea YWCA and it's one of my favorite buildings in Downtown Honolulu. Located right next door to the Iolani Palace, the YWCA is a quiet hidden gem that can often be forgotten about. If you're looking for a mid-size venue for a wedding reception or business function this is a great option because it's centrally located and the grounds are gorgeous. I've attended a few social media seminars in Elizabeth Hall and it's the perfect size for a group of 50-80 guests. The building itself is over 100 years old and I love looking at the architectural details on the columns and entranceways. Parking can be a bit tricky because it is downtown but you can park at Ali'i Place which is accessible via Alakea Street, at Iolani Palace across the street or at the post office located at the corner of King & Richards Street. As a member of the YWCA in Oahu, I like taking advantage of the offers that the YWCA provides for its members. I heard about the "YWCA Benefit Sale: Dress For Success" through the website and fliers inside the Laniakea location/building on Richards street (their main building on the island). This is definitely one resale that the YWCA holds every month that is worth checking out. The sale is the last Tuesday through Friday of each month. I think that you can go in during select months and shop/buy if you aren't a member. Times of sale for it is 11am-2pm. Their current members get a "Give Back Card" for every $100 you spend. Their set up thrift sale is inside the Laniakea building, and has only women's clothes for sale. Items are in pretty good condition; they do a good job picking out the pieces that people would actually wear and want to buy. A lot of styles are catered towards women in their late 30's and up, but there are enough younger looking picks to bring in us young girls. There's a big section for LARGE and MEDIUM but a smaller section for SMALL clothes. They have tops, pants, skirts, dresses and a big selection of name brand professional 2-piece suits. Accessories include purses, shoes, scarfs and jewelry. I skipped the shoes and purses since nothing was interesting. Bottom line: if you're looking for clothes for work that need to be professional looking, conservative or business casual--you'll definitely walk out with something then. As for the prices--they're mad cheap! Their flier ad says: "$5 tops/skirts/jackets/slacks + $10 dresses/2-piece outfits + $20 suits" Although, when I went on their second to last day of the sale, I walked in and the signs on the racks said, "everything $3 except for 'boutique store' " ...boutique store meaning brand name fashions, which were marked at $5. The fashion brands there were pretty impressive; Calvin Klein, Ann Taylor, Armani Exchange, Banana Republic, Bebe, Wet Seal, Charlotte Russe, Cinnamon Girl, and much more. Some of the clothes are new with the tags still attached and others are mostly pre-worn clothes I got a summer dress, a Bebe dress, a Calvin Klein button down work shirt and a Wet seal tank top---all for $12 total! That's only 3 bucks a piece people, and all in great condition! I think most of my clothes were on the "boutique store" racks but the girl didn't charge me $5 for it. Perhaps all the clothes were discounted from $5 (what it said in the ad) to $3 because it was near the end of the week and they want to sell as much as they can to make a profit. Either that or it was because of my member ID I showed her or because she just didn't give a you-know-what! All their proceeds from the sale go to the Dress For Success Honolulu Program. Their program supporters are AUW Society of Young Leaders, Kate Spade New York, Ann Taylor and Ala Moana Center. 1 star deducted because the dressing room is communal...there's lots of room in the dressing room but there's no separated rooms for privacy--you're stripping down in front of others! read more

This is the building my church has services in, it's a very nice room and a pretty building but, the AC is rarely on, the carpets are filthy, and the room is just ok. As for the Y, I have walked around this place, it's pretty big, they have pretty nice work out rooms, a nice outdoor pool, and the locker rooms are very nice. The building is very old looking, and not all that well maintained. But overall it's alright. read more

Nestled across of the Iolani Palace lies this wonderful place called YWCA which has programs that support mostly women (though I think men can join in the recreational programs and more--it's best to inquire with the organization). I had the honor of attending their monthly clothing sale which consists of selling designer and ordinary business wear to raise money for their programs. The sale dates varies and it's best to look at the website or their Facebook page. The sale usually goes from 10 am until 2 pm, but it's best to go early since that's when you can get the best clothes, jewelry, and shoes. I arrived at 9:50 am and there was a bunch of ladies waiting anxiously for the sale. Once the clock hit 10 am, all the ladies dashed into this small area of the lobby to get all the clothes they could carry. It was kind of a mad house, but I managed to get some clothes--slacks, dresses, and blouses to try. There was also bags, purses, jewelry, watches, shoes, slacks, pants, dresses, skirts, aloha shirts, and Ugg boots too, but I was determined to find appropriate business wear for work. There was a closed small community room with chairs and mirrors for women to try the clothes and see if it fits. I took 2 hours to find 6 designer brand clothes--1 $5 Express Slacks, $10 Anne Klein dress, and 4 blouses ($5 each) for a total of $35. I wanted to search more but felt weary after trying on so many clothes. I would definitely come again for the sale, but wished it was a little less of a mad house in the beginning. I just had my wedding here and I couldn't have been happier. The star of this place is Kelii the manager. He was such a pleasure to work with. Very responsive, accommodating and adaptable. The courtyard was beautiful and the ballroom was exactly what we wanted. If the weather wasn't so unpredictable having both the ceremony and reception in the courtyard would have been nice. Emerson the owner was also very nice. He seemed sincerely excited for us to get married at his place. The only negative was the bartender working our wedding she wasn't the friendlies. We brought in our own alcohol and she opened all the bottles of wine. So at the end of the night they gave us back all the leftover alcohol and we had about 8 full bottles of open wine. Review for SOCIAL WAHINES event: *Before I review park in the Ali'i Place building on Alakea street as parking is $0.75 per half hour. then walk around onto Richards street. its like a 2 minute walk. I found this event on MeetUp dot com and registered via event brite. It was a FREE networking event for career, business oriented wahines (women). I went by myself, which was kind of lame...should've brought a friend. Anyways, check in was in the front which they gave me a name tag. All the women were in this small banquet room with random tables promoting certain businesses. I felt very disconnected as the women at the tables weren't as inviting. However I found Cafe Laniakea where I ran into a couple old coworkers. I had a glass of wine and ending up leaving. I'd definitely go back to YWCA for the cafe but probably not for that event. read more

I love the feel of this YWCA...the old school architecture to me makes this place so beautiful. The iron wrought balconies, wood details in the lobby, cobbled stone... The courtyard area is also a beautiful place to relax, outdoor yet still indoor. The addition of Cafe Julia on the premises is also a plus. I was here today for the First Lady: The Movement event that was held here. I loved that this event was promoting business women & entrepreneurs! The set up was throughout the courtyard and in the Cafe Julia area. There were a lot of great vendors, but weaving throughout the tables was a bit confusing... Either way, I'm happy that the Y is continuing to support and provide opportunities for women! As for facilities, I've only seen the pool and the indoor gym--yes, there is one here believe it or not! If you enter the Y from the front entrance (on Richards Street) and walk straight, up the stairs, the gym is right at the top! This is a beautiful building that does and provides so many great programs and services to the community. My main reasons for visiting the YWCA Laniakea are to (1) drop off clothing to donate to the Dress For Success program, and (2) eat at Cafe Julia. The Dress For Success program is an awesome program to help ladies get on their feet and into the workforce with training, tips, and a couple of outfits to boot. The program accepts career clothing, shoes, handbags, accessories, and makeup. It feels good to help by donating. The second reason I visit the YWCA is to eat Cafe Julia, which deserves (and has) its own Yelp review. Each time I visit this historic building, I feel like I am taken back in time. I love the architecture of this building with the beautiful courtyard and swimming pool in the middle. You forget that you are in Downtown and easily ignore the glass and concrete office towers situated around this building. I've been here to use their meeting rooms for seminars, but the YWCA also houses a gym, classroom and studio space and even the Myron B. Thompson Charter School. So much is housed in this gem in Downtown Honolulu. It truly is a must see. read more

This was my very first time to this place. I have to say that this place has good activities for all ages alike. Also the courtyard of this place is breathtaking beautiful and for a wedding like this, it was very nice and wonderful. I highly recommend that if you wanna have a wedding, just let the people know and for sure that it will happen for you. Remember being here few times for the cafe and the dress for success clothing sales event. The building was elegantly designed with geometric lines and aesthetic symmetry, under tremendous western influence, the building was highly valued as historical architect and significant masterpiece. The ywca used to be a good place to enroll in a few classes. I had been a member from 1999 thru 2009. I had lived in a small unit in Manoa for 3 years. One day I hung laundry up and the female in the next apartment assaulted me. She assumed I was touching her laundry, so she started banging my arms. I was upset and called 911. They thought she called because she has very light skin & mine is pretty tan. So they nearly arrested me. I was very upset with the whole thing. My landlord thought of evicting all of us. Then he changed his mind & asked the female to bring me a lease to extend. Apparently they realized their error. But I said no. I'm moving into the YWCA Fernhurst, not knowing it was occupied primarily by felons. I ended up volunteering for them for 2 years and finally I left to a new unit. I went to the YWCA on Richard Street & they claimed I couldn't join because of an "incident". The entire time at their residence I actually set their dinner and breakfast, brought in new members and settled disputes. First time at this place didn't know there was a ywca center. Nice venue for wedding and other parties. Love the character of the building and the colors. When we went around 3 pm. It wasn't crowded. Staff are very nice and helpful. read more

Why is there only 1 review besides mine? Anyway, I just recently started to volunteer for the Dress for Success program which has only one location on the island, YWCA Laniakea. There are so many great things about the facility and the program I don't know where to begin! Dress for success is a great program which provides disadvantaged women with professional attire so they are prepared in their quest for their perfect career. If the building could speak I'm sure she would have wonderful stories to tell. I actually took swimming, tennis, computer, and ukulele classes there as a child. The pool still looks exactly the same, except they took away the spring board! Oh well! But the pool is heated now! About a week ago I went in to inquire about a lady I met during one of their dress for success events they were quite busy so I left my name and number with a lady whom I found out was Shirley... Because I'm not a member I didn't think that I was going to get a call back but to my surprise she called that this morning with information for me... On vacation from the mainland and needed a monthly weigh at a weight watchers meeting. Found one here at noon Thursday. Could not have been more convenient and people were very friendly. Had a great conversation with the leader, but unfortunately didn't get her name. The building was very interesting also. The little cafe has a gorgeous courtyard that I believe is available to rent for special occasions. Getting information about that was not easy though. There's a pool on the other side which was a unique set up. Worth checking out. read more

We have our yearly office staff meeting here today, it's the second time now and the quality of service and the overall feel has improved significantly perhaps it's the lighting but they did a much better job with the room. read more

The pool at the YWCA is one of the most gorgeous and peaceful spots on the island. The pool is located in an open air courtyard with a garden around it. It is pretty surreal to be back stroking and looking up at the surrounding buildings. Cafe Julia is located inside the Y, great place to grab a glass of wine or business lunch. I also rent the event space several times a year to host workshops for my job. The architecture of the building is gorgeous! read more
