Perfectly balanced diet of meat, carbs, veggies and happiness…read more Like all good things, we started with two dips to go with the complimentary bread - garlic yoghurt and tomato eggplant. The smokiness of the eggplant shines through and the yoghurt gives it a tangy creamy coolness. Slip in a cheeky mint leaf and the world is good. The koobideh was massive on flavour and portion - so big it could feed a family of four or a hungry me. Tender juicy lamb and buttery fragrant rice. Sweet juicy chargrilled tomato and chilli to give it a kick. Ghormeh sabzi. Beautifully tender lamb pieces and beans. Fragrant herbs spices and dried lime. Massive pile of rice. Massive pile of happy. Too full this time, but dessert won't escape me next time round...

Over the last few years though things have started to change for the better and Jaam-e-Jam is the latest shimering oasis in Hornsby's cultural dessert. They have been open a few months now and serve really amazing Persian food. For those of you who (like me, up until last night) has never eaten Persian, it's similar to Lebanese/Turkish/etc but at the same time, quite different. And it tastes amazing. Kebabs are a big part of the menu and we had the Jaam-e-Jam special which was a mix of minced lamb, lamb fillet and chicken kebabs, all beautifully cooked. We also had a chicken stew in a pomegranate and walnut sauce that was absolutely fantastic and a braised lamb shank served with broad beans, rice and dill. Fantastic. Everything is served with buttery saffron rice and bread. They also serve traditional Persian drinks - rockmelon juice with ice and sugar, carrot juice with ice cream (yep) or Doogh, a traditional spiced yogurt drink that's sweet, sour and salty all at once. Desserts included saffron and rosewater ice cream (available to take home from the Persian supermarket next door), traditional Persian sweets and some chilled rice noodles in rosewater syrup served with lime juice. Not your ordinary, everyday dessert selection and all fantastic. The service was fast and friendly. As first timers they advised us on how much to order (and got it spot on) and the prices are very reasonable. Well worth a visit. They also do breakfast and lunch. Some of the Persian breakfasts might even tempt us out of bed on a weekend morning...

Flame grilled chicken places have become more popular lately and this is definitely one of the…read morebest. I've been going to El Jannah at Granville for years and have also been to Inflames at Castle Hill and I have to say that Sultans Grill is better than them both! The food is essentially the same. The same great tasting flame grilled chook, the same pickles, awesome garlic sauce, etc. But thats where the similarities end. Unlike El Jannah you can actually get a parking spot here. Its directly across the road from the Bull n Bush hotel and there is heaps of parking both on the street out the front and behind the restaurant. Unlike El Jannah you don't have to queue forever and you can also actually get a seat as well. I don't know how long that will all last but for now its awesome. They do a chicken wrap with chips and a can of drink for a little over ten bucks and you can get it eat in or take away. There's a large indoor dining area with a big screen tv on the wall and also quite a few tables and chairs out on the street as well. They have a huge range of other things on the menu but I can't really comment about them as I'm just a massive fan of their chicken wraps and chips with heaps of extra garlic sauce. If you like El Jannah or Inflames then try Sultans Grill. You can probably park, order, eat and be out of there in the same time it'd take you to find parking at one of the other charcoal chicken shops!

5 Stars... for a Kebab shop. I know. A kebab is usually something you grab on the spur of the…read moremoment at 3am while drunk. And usually regret it deeply the next day. Zozan is diferent. We've been going here for years. I tried to work out how long but couldn't. I think it's at least 15. We go there after we do the shopping because it's late and we can't be arsed cooking. Yes it's a kebab shop. They do kebabs. But they are really good kebabs. Everything is fresh. They make their own chicken and lamb *whatever you call those big lumps of meat on the things that go round*. Yes, them. They make their own. And they are fantastic. The doner (beef) they buy in from elsewhere and it's... well... doner. But the chicken and lamb are fantastic. And they take the time to toast them rather than just whacking them in a bag. The real secret though, is to bypass the regular kebabs and ask for the adana or shish. These are a real treat. Big chunks of marinated meat freshly char-grilled over coals while you watch, then topped with some traditional salads. All with really good, made on premises, Turkish bread. They do take a while to cook (usually 10-15 mins longer on a busy night) but they are so worth it. With char-grilled chillies. So good. This isn't your usual dodgy kebab shop. This is Turkish street food. In Sydney. They have real pride in what they do and take great care to make sure that everything is just right. They even gave me their recipe for their lentils and rice (try that.. it's amazing... the secret is to almost, but not quite, burn the onions). This is a kebab you won't regret the next day.
