Want to experience heaven on earth? I did…read more Picture this: Sitting outside in the hot springs. There are only a couple of other people in here as well. You're sitting there, watching the steam rise into the fresh, brisk air. The springs are lit by the moon and the stars and it starts to snow. Your body is perfectly warm and comfortable and one by one, snowflakes fall into your hair. The steam continues to rise and you look up and make a wish on a shooting star. All is right in the world. This was one of my many experiences in the hot springs at the Aquatic Centre at The Banff Springs Hotel. When you first walk in, are greeted by a 32 metre indoor pool (which is 7 metres longer than an Olympic sized pool I'll have you know). There is also an indoor hot tub located at the side and it's surrounded by rock walls, so it makes you feel like it's a hot tub inside a mountain. Then, you go outside, and are welcomed by the indescribable hot springs which are surrounded by The Rockies. It's NEVER too crowded here, it's clean and it's truly heaven on earth. I cannot even describe how it feels to sit outside in the moonlit hot springs. The springs don't close until 10pm, so you've got a good number of hours to soak it all in. The locker rooms are pristine and they offer all products for their guests. Bath-sized towels, hair products, bath wash, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, hair dryers, you name it. Everything is kept clean and the crowd is monitored so that the hot springs are always welcoming and clean. I love it here. Truly. When I'm thinking of heaven on earth, I daydream of these hot springs and all my problems melt away.

There is a diverse class offering with times throughout the day from morning to evening candlelight sessions. They are rated 1-4 for difficulty and have offerings including, bowl meditation, intro sessions, gentle styles, and hot yoga. The costs seem competitive and for newbies like me, there is an intro cost level that has been really appreciated. From there, you can buy sessions on a sliding scale or commit to a duration. Also for newbies like me, they rent mats. I didn't want to buy one in case I hated it. :-) The teachers that I've experienced seem knowledgeable, patient, keep an even pace and are attentive to assist you if you are lost in a pose or help modify if you are struggling. They allow for online sign up or drop in. Classes have varied greatly in terms of fullness, but I haven't seen one yet where everyone didn't all fit. There are 2 rooms and I noticed the bathroom has a shower if needed. The place is clean, the people warm and welcoming, although getting a hold of them can be a challenge. I tried calling with no answer and FB doesn't seem that active, taking a few days for someone to respond to me by messenger. Overall I'm extremely pleased with my experience and plan to make the most of it before my schedule ramps up. Definitely recommend!

While it's a great little studio, there is nothing beyond intro and restorative Yoga. I get it, it's a niche thing, but I can't pay over $100 per month for laying on a cold floor. I took a chance and went out to Cochrane for a class. I have now been to at least 6 in three weeks. The drive is 35 minutes each way, so it's a bit of a committment however, there was an intro $50 unlimited 1 month pass, so I took advantage of it rather than paying $18/drop in. (Yes, people in Alberta are nuts to pay this ...their teachers are nothing compared to the West Coast - just sayin'). I like that there is a hot room as well as a regular room. I haven't tried the regular room yet as I am used to, and love, heated classes. I have done Monday/Wednesday and Friday 930 am classes as well as some lunch classes. What I like is the Friday 930 am vinyasa - lots of variety, music and ability to work at all levels. Hatha classes bore the heck out of me, but in a pinch I'll go. I'm not fond of no music - and so far there is only 1 musical class I have attended. I am going to try the Cowboy class they list as well as an evening class taught by a male instructor on Mondays, with my nearly broken DH. We are also going to try bringing our 6 year old to a kids class next Saturday while we practice in tandem - great idea. All in all, it's a decent studio and I am considering buying a monthly pass. I wish they had more musical classes....they just let you get into a zone. They have showers and some things to dry / tie your hair up. It's also great to have a cold lemongrass facecloth at the end of the hot room classes - maybe the others too, but I've not heard. I will update if possible.

I will return many times during my two weeks in town.

It's a flight of stairs from street level, but the view from the studio is simply breathtaking. Different types of yoga are taught, and teachers all have their expertise. Even though one can get used to the sight of the snow-capped Rockies after a few weeks in the region, nobody can really stay cold to the mountain panorama that can be seen through a ceiling-high window. Make sure to come to a class that starts before sunset so you can fully enjoy the view! The studio is small and cozy, which makes the practice much more calming, and the hardwood floor adds a homely touch to the whole studio. If you're more of an outdoors person, teachers often offer outdoors classes directly on the mountains, especially in the summer. As for any yoga studio, drop-in class fees are $18, and there is no student discount. There is a monthly trial package if you're new to the studio, but since you won't be disappointed, the best deal is obviously the yearly subscription. Mat rentals are cheap ($1). This local size neighborhood (plenty of space, not crowded together) gym was next to the resort (joke gym) I was staying at with my pro level fitness competitor fiancé. I was tasked with the job of finding a gym to meet her needs. After talking to Chad (owner) we walked over and met with him. He is very proud of his facility and for good reason. CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN, well maintained, great equipment for cardio and resistance training and very large open space/area(rubber floor) for stretching and plyometrics. We did a 1 week deal at a reasonable price with 24 hour access. Cardio equipment is situated facing large windows with views of Three Sisters Peaks. All machines were functioning 100% and clean. Resistance training area- Rogue Free weights and benches, dumbbells up to 150LBS. Lots of Hammer Strength selectorized machines. Basically anything a serious gym rat would want. All in like new condition. For the woman everything and more you need for glutes and legs! YES 2 squat racks and one Smith! Leg presses, hacks ........ Only missing members required to use/bring a sweat towel. Wish I had a gym like this in my home town.
