We recently bought a what I consider very expensive pair of shoes at Zocolo Shoes from Mr Doug Goodhart ($395) with a pair of custom made insoles. Since he has good training that he also got in Germany where most of his shoes are made and I know that orthodontics there are very good, I was happy for him to choose the shoes for me since I have a bunion on my big toe so that I have trouble finding shoes that fit well. Although I did tell him several times that the shoes that he selected for me were rather tight on my big toe, he said that that would change once he makes the insoles and that there would be more space afterwards. Of course he told me to contact him if I had any questions or concerns at all. Since he seemed very nice and knowledgeable I went ahead with his choice. Once the shoes came in the mail, unfortunately I still had the same problem that the shoes were too tight. Nor did he tell me ahead of time that my knees would hurt for an extended period of time with the new insoles, something that I would expect to be told ahead of time. Once I had the problem with the not fitting shoes that I only wore in the house for a few hours, Mr Goodhart was not very friendly any more and turned very rude once I needed help. When I asked him to provide me a different pair of shoes that would fit or take the shoes that I got back, he did not reply at all any more to my E-mails. When I finally sent back the shoes because I could not wear them since they made my toe problem worse, he refused to take the package and they were sent back. Nor was I informed about his return policy when I bought the shoes (a small printing on the receipt says that they are non returnable.) This was the worst customer service I have ever experienced in my life and Mr Goodhart turned from nice to very rude once I needed help. I would recommend buying some good Birkenstock insoles online rather than buying any of his overpriced shoes, because unless you are lucky and the shoes including the insoles fit perfectly the first time (he does not take imprints of your feet), you are out of luck and waisted a lot of money! I regret that I did not check these reviews before I shopped at this store. I spent over $700 and had intended on buying three more pair in August; one pair of shoes fit fine, the other did not fit, nor was the work on them performed as described. I tried emailing to get help; the response was extremely slow, sometimes nonexistent. I was trying to find out how to adjust the shoes in order for them to work for me, I couldn't get them to help me. The owner, Doug Goodhart, was extremely rude. When I mentioned that I was concerned that they did not respond to emails and that the shoes did not work, he told me they answer when they want to, not when the customer wants them to. And further, that they do not accept returns. I have never experienced this kind of rudeness from a store owner or anyone who wants anyone to respect their work or product. My husband & I have both purchased shoes and we have been treated with outstanding customer service each time. The shoes and orthotics fit for my husband have made a huge improvement in his plantar fasciitis. After wearing these shoes exclusively for a few weeks he now walks with minimal discomfort. I have bunions on both feet and these shoes and orthotics provide great support and have kept my feet from getting worse. I am having a significant amount of pain as it concerns the overall fit even metatarsal area, which I was assured would be taken care of with the custom orthodics. I had difficulty with the build up on the soles which after 30 days detached. The new sole itself was sticky which therefore collected grit, and gravel. I was assured that this was the best product ever produced if you were looking for a tread. It is difficult to communicate with Mr Goodhart. read more

My wife and I both bought a pair of shoes from Zocalo last spring. I have some pretty torn up feet from years of climbing shoe abuse; plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, fatigue. Now, being old and fat, foot health has become a huge priority. I was pretty skeptical, considering the dang things cost me 300 bucks. The first couple of weeks, they hurt the arch of my feet; the orthodics are corrective, so I expected some pain. After that, smooth sailing. I wear them daily (I'm a guy) and super tough on shoes. They have held up brilliantly. I usually buy a new pair of shoes about every 8 months (Keen, Merrell, Lowa, Nike). Doug promised me 3 years out of this shoe; with an insole replacement at a year and a half. One year in and still comfortable; they have tons of life left in them. For sissy-hippy Birkenstocks, I am completely impressed. Well worth the investment. -1 star for no cowboy boots. read more
