Yokdzonot is just a 10 minute drive away from Chichen Itza. If you're not on a group bus tour, this is a must visit. When we came here, we were the only people. It was an amazing experience. This cenote is maintained by locals and not many tourists know about it. When we got here, we saw some 3-4 locals got into the water and cleared up the fallen leaves. It is much cheaper than any of the other cenotes we were considering. While some cost at least 50-100 USD, this cost about 3.5 USD. And that included life vests. They also had a rappelling line above the cenote. The water was a clear turquoise blue and had mangrove roots along the edges.

We stopped by the ruins at Ake this past week when we were exploring the area surrounding Merida…read more On our way to Izamal, we stopped at Ake, which was a very interesting comparison to Uxmal, which we had visited the day before. Uxmal is a significant attraction in the area - lots of tourists, lots of guides! When stopped by Ake, we were the only visitors! After our guide purchased our tickets to enter the site from the woman in the kiosk, we were on our own on the site! Ake's architecture dates from the Mayan Early Classic era (250-550 CE). It doesn't have the intricate details and grandeur of Uxmal, but it's beautiful and interesting in its own right! Maybe because it isn't as much of an attraction and you might be able to explore the site entirely privately, it's special and unique. You can climb up on the pyramid to get a great view of the overall site! Just next to the entrance, there's a factory making natural twine (from henequen), and they will give you a tour for a small fee if you want to learn about henequen textile production! Overall, it's a site well worth visiting if you're interested in Mayan culture and history - although best with a guide who can explain the site (since it's not as developed as an archeological site as Uxmal, for example)!

This isn't Chichen Itza so if you are planning on coming a long way make sure you want to make the drive. If you are staying on the coast/Progresso or even Merida it's worth the visit. 75 pesos entrance fee, bring your bug spray and sun screen. You can walk through most of the site in way under an hour. Bathroom at the main gate. You are on your own while in the site. We arrived on a day where there were only 7-8 other people so we go the top of both of the pyramids to ourselves for pictures. One thing that would be nice is a kiosk or sign or something that tells folks about the site. If your a Mayan history buff you will have already read everything you need to know and can drive your group crazy with facts.

I was in Merida on work earlier this year and made a quick visit to Uxmal. If you're into archeology and history, this is an interesting place to visit. Note climbing the pyramids is no longer allowed in Mexico. The park requires two separate tickets, and the purchasing process is inefficient. You can buy one ticket from an automated kiosk or stand in line. Then, you must stand in a separate line to purchase the second ticket. Credit cards are accepted, but the lines for using credit cards are slow. Cell service is a bit spotty. Public restrooms are available and they are cleaner than average. Time budget: 1.5 to 2 hours Parking: Parking is not free. Bring some pesos to pay for parking. Tips: Plan to protect yourself from the sun and stay hydrated.

A lot fewer crowds possibly because of its more remote location . Beautiful landscape with lots of Iguanas. There is paid parking available. There are couple of Cenotes X'Batun and Dzonbakal on an off beat path to cool down. Definitely a must visit place ! My advice to tourist is to rent a car when in Yucatan and you can actually reach places that are wonders !
