I had ashy blue hair and wanted to change my hair to an ashy/silvery blonde. I was worried about how the end result would be, but Chloe did a great job. She was very accommodating and didn't seem to mind answering any of my questions, both before and during the process. I felt that Zoom really focused on client's having an enjoyable and relaxing experience. The have a lounge area where they also do coloring. This was a first for me as I'm usually just sitting in the regular salon chair while my hair gets done, but this space felt more relaxing. They also had plenty of tea options for guests. One thing that I did notice was that one side of my hair was slightly lighter than the other. I think most people wouldn't notice it though. Would definitely recommend Zoom. read more

Andie is a hair goddess!!! One of the best haircuts of my life. She talked me through all of her ideas in the consultation and then each time she executed one of her ideas she'd let me know first. I felt super safe in her hands. I've had some bad haircuts and never once did I feel that she was going into that zone. In fact, I am kind of blown away at the end result. So I really don't want to write this review because every time I do with a service that I'm in love with bad things happen... like, for example, I can't get an appointment anymore. If you're looking at this review and I have short hair in my picture? Ivy did that. It looked and grew awesomely and she's amazing. I shouldn't tell you how amazing because you'll probably book an appointment and it will obviously be at the exact same time that I want to go. But whatever. Credit where credit is due. Phenomenal. I went to see Jason with 3 months to go before my wedding after my usual stylist went on mat leave. Unfortunately for her, he just won a new dedicated customer! I went in with a couple of pictures for colour and style, and he pulled it off magnificently while also taking good care of my hair. He gave was great at communicating exactly what he was doing so that I had my expectations set at the beginning of the appointment. I am a natural blonde and wanted to go lighter (close to my little girl colour) for my wedding while also managing to add some depth and layers. It looks great! I also loved that they do colour in their 'kitchen' area, where you are seated around a table piled high with magazines where you can either read, drink your delicious fresh Americano, or chat with the other clients and stylists. What a great set up! No more weird mirror eye contact! He also recommended a follow up schedule and some tips to make sure my hair is in the best shape possible for my wedding, and I've already booked my next two appointments to make sure I get him again. He didn't have time to finish styling it before his next client, so he rushed through it a bit. I was so happy with the cut and colour that I didn't mind, but he insisted that it wasn't good enough and asked another stylist (Amanda) to re-style it for him before I left the building. Since the cut & colour I've been getting nothing but compliments from friends and strangers alike. I feel like I finally have the bombshell hair that I always dreamed of! I was very happy with my experience at this hair studio. Even though I was a bit late for my appointment with Natalia, she still took me in without a hint of annoyance. I was greeted with a friendly smile and she listened carefully to what hair cut I wanted. She even gave me a glass of water, how lovely! She had me wear a robe over my clothes and then shampooed my hair along with a very relaxing massage. After my cut, I absolutely love how my hair turned out! She didn't cut it too short or left it too long, it was the perfect length. As she was showing me my finished hair, I noticed that she remembered everything I asked for because she pointed everything out. We also had a nice chat and she made me feel welcome and comfortable. She actually had two other customers come in for hair coloring and she moved very efficiently and was able to attend to everyone without rushing anything. While someone else blow dries my hair, she was tending to the other customer. And as their hair color sets, she came back to finish off my hair. We even had time to take a picture together! Very good time management right there and nobody had to wait for too long. As for the environment, the interior looks very modern and professional. The studio was clean and they had bag hooks/holders on all stations. I read a previous review on here talking about not having space to put their bags--now they do! It just shows that the owner takes suggestions and concerns into consideration and finds solutions for them. I really like how the stylists were focused on their work and kept a professional environment, unlike other salons where they just endlessly chatter with one another and not pay attention to the customer. I went in for a cut last night after letting my hair grow way too long. I looked at the decent reviews on Yelp and decided to try Zoom (it's located so close to home, and that was an added bonus too.) Amanda was kind and fun to chat with, but after a quick glance at the picture I brought of the cut I wanted, she went off in another direction. The layers she cut were too severe and too short, and nothing like the picture I brought in. In my shock after the cut I went home and thought that it might be salvageable, but my cut is so short that I don't think I'll be able to blend/tame those layers. I'm really not a person who is attached to my hair, often going through long hair phases only to chop it all off. However, my cut at Zoom upset me so much after the shock wore off that I cried in front of the mirror a little. I'm wishing I didn't go, or perhaps had another stylist. :( read more

Due to traffic, my stylist was quite late. While this wasn't a great thing, the way that Zoom dealt with it was admirable. The staff was very attentive, offering me water, etc. and once it became apparent that my stylist was really going to be late, I was given a complimentary hand massage to help pass the time! Now for the truly important stuff: The Hair! My hair is wavy when it is medium/short length, but by the time I get around to getting it cut it is usually a bit long (so fairly straight, with only a hint of a wave). Despite me giving advanced warning, most stylists will layer my hair, which will then curl, and then I end up with a pseudo-mullet. I have gone to many different stylists and am always both nervous and hopeful when visiting a new establishment. I *think* that I saw Amanda (I'm truly horrible with names), but regardless of what her name was she listened to what I told her and, miracle of miracles, when she was done my hair did not evenly remotely resemble a mullet! Even after washing it at home it still looked good. My friend also got her hair done here at the same time (with another stylist, obviously) and she was also very pleased with her cut. Her hair is quite thick and she is prone to 'triangle head', so she requires a fair amount of thinning and has not always been pleased with the results from other stylists. The fact that both of us, who have difficulties getting good cuts, were satisfied with the results here says something pretty good about the place, I think! I will definitely be returning. read more

I came in for a basic eyebrow clean-up. When I walked in, I introduced myself to the person who turned out to be the esthetician. She actually stood there for two or three beats and gave me the most obvious head-to-toe size-up I've ever seen. It was weird. And uncomfortable. Once we'd gone back to the esthetics area, I explained to her that I needed a clean-up, and any extra tweezing/waxing as she saw fit for symmetry. She responded back "Ok. I'll see what I can do." I really should have just hopped off the bench right then. She did an okay job on my brows; I've had worse, and I've had way better. But honestly, the entire experience was just so awkward and weird that I left wondering if I'd sprouted a pair of antlers, or something. read more

Ivy did a very wonderful job but it was insanely overpriced. I was told that because my hair was thick, they had to add extra product and this is why I was charged $100 more than quoted. My total price was $248 for a chin length perm. Professional services but I know a couple of other places that offer the same quality and stick to their quotes or at least warn the customer ahead of time. I was a first time customer also and prepared to shell out $150 to 200. $250 is just ridiculous and daylight robbery for a short perm. I will not be returning or recommending this place. Updated Feb 13: Walked in to other salons and the max charge after looking and feeling my hair in person is $60 to $100. I got a cut also at Zooms so it shouldn't be more than $150 range. After discussing my displeasure about my haircut with Natalia via email, she defended her stylist and made me feel as if the lack of communication was my wrong doing instead of taking accountability for her staff's actions. I asked for my bangs to be cut in line with my eyebrows, and expressed that often my hair stylist is hesitant to cut them to this short length. When it came time to cutting them, my stylist asked me again if I wanted them short, and without hesitation or further clarification took their shears and chopped off the entirety of the length. I now have bangs that are uneven and appear as though I hacked at them with dull Crayola scissors. I mentioned via email that the word short is rather subjective. Given that my stylist's interpretation of short was clearly very different than mine, it would have been nice to have been asked what MY interpretation of short was, rather than taking liberties and hacking my hair before communicating properly. I will not be a returning client, especially after the salon owner made me feel as if the bad haircut I received was my own fault. I think it's relatively safe to assume that nobody in their right mind would request to have "baby bangs" in the year 2014. read more

The first time I went in was for a cut and roots. The cut was great, the roots were much darker than the rest of my hair but since I was told it would lighten over time I sat on it. I left it for a while and the second time I went back to get my roots done again I asked her to fix the first time (since it never lightened) and just blend it through. I was told you can't put color on color and she would have to give me baby lights to fix all of it. So I paid another hundred something for her to dye my roots (to match the darker roots she did last time) which was still about two shades darker than my hair. A week later went in to get the baby lights which cost me another couple hundred?!?! Why am I paying to fix her mistake? 300+ dollars later... my roots still don't match the rest of my hair but it's to the point where it's just acceptable and I'm not planning to go back and pay another couple hundred to fix it. I'm pretty disappointed too because my hairstylist was super sweet and she did give me a really good cut but to pay over 300 to fix her original mistake and it's STILL not right?! Sorry. I have went to Zoom a few times and I'm always pleased with the outcome. I had an appointment at 10:45am on Saturday morning. I showed up 15-20 minutes earlier and waited. At 10:45am, the booking clerk sat next to me and informed me that someone had called to tell me that my appointment was going to be delayed until 11:15am and that I had accepted this change. I do not recall this. But that was fine, I asked if I would be done as I had to be in Kitsilano for a wedding as I was a bridesmaid by 1:00pm and they said it would be done in time. So, I waited. At 11:20, my hairstylist took me and informed me that there must have been some confusion as they had left me a message - two different stories... one from the booking clerk who told me that I was called and that I had accepted the time change when they called and now one from the hair stylist saying that there was a voice mail left for me. Ok - no big deal. Either way, I didn't receive the message. I've already accepted that it would be 30 minutes later. Time to move on. After noting that I HAD to be in Kitsilano at 1:00pm, my hair is done at 12:35ish pm. I didn't want to say anything, I am too worried about conflict and causing a scene. It gives me anxiety to upset other people, I really really did like her and the trim she did. I figured we would just be a little bit late if we managed to avoid traffic. But I didn't get to Kitsilano until 1:50pm. The wedding started at 2:00pm. I had 10 minutes to rush to get ready with my dress, shoes and make-up. I wish I had kept my phone with me to keep note of the time but I figured once I mentioned I had to be in Kitsilano at one after they delayed my appointment by 30 minutes that it would be on their mind. In conclusion, thank you for the great trim and style. Disappointed with the lack of communication with the time change and how long the cut would take. If I had known it would have taken so long to get a trim, I would have not bothered and would have been on time for my make-up and getting ready wedding photos for my best friends wedding. I'll STILL go back because they do a great job. Just going to call them the day before from now on because it ended up ruining the getting ready with my friend for her wedding portion for us. I'm constantly (pleasantly!) surprised by what my neighbourhood of downtown New West has to offer in the way of shops and services. Zoom opened shortly after we moved here--as it was being fitted out, I was intrigued by the brash and fun design that seemed to be shaping up inside. I walked past every day on my way to and from the skytrain, and resolved to check it out as soon as it opened. Bully for me! For my first cut, I had Vanya, and she did not hesitate to give me the punky pomp I wanted. While she was away on a sabbatical, I had several cuts by Ivy, who also did a bang-up job. The salon is beautiful and brilliantly maintained. There's no chemistry lab stink when you walk in, due to their commitment to the most eco-friendly products they can find. Even their retail products (Kevin Murphy) are reasonably priced--I'm so accustomed to salons using B+b, which is always prohibitively expensive. All in all, a really wonderful local spot that I'd like to see stick around for years to come. read more

I've been to Zoom several times over the past few years, and I've never gotten so many compliments on my hair as I have after my latest cut with Lindsey. She listened to my various hair obsessions and gave me a gorgeous bob that I don't even really have to style in the morning ... just wash it, dry it (sort of), comb the bangs, primp with a little sea salt spray (mmm) and off I go! I've also had my hair done by Ivy a couple of times, who not only knows what's up with styling short hair and bangs but is also very bubbly and fun to talk to. Since Ivy has been on mat leave, my one disappointing experience here was another junior stylist, but she seems to be gone now. It is a very small salon, so you do hear everyone's conversations while you're there and that can be either annoying or wonderful. I like that they always seem to be playing 90s music and it's just a fun atmosphere with good people. And of course, there's Zorro, the hyperactive canine greeter. Does every hair salon have a dog in residence or do I just gravitate to the ones that do? read more

I moved here a few years ago and I hadn't been able to find a regular hair stylist but now I have one! Natalia is wonderful- without a doubt the best hair cut I've ever had! The studio is clean and beautiful. All the staff are so friendly and fun. I showed Natalia a picture of what I wanted and she talked me through it to ensure I got exactly what I wanted. Senior is a total scam!! Based on google and yelp reviews and the location, I booked a senior stylist for extra assurance of the result, but I was wrong! With $80, it's the worst haircut I ever had. I mean only the worst haircut by Ivy, not other thing else because everything was excellent: clean place, nice people (Ivy was nice too but not the technique), on site laundry, drink serves. So it was a bit suspicious that Ivy didn't show me the 360° with a hand mirror when finished, but I was too into the chitchatting that I didn't ask. When I got home I looked at the mirror and only then I found out a good handful of my hair on one side were chopped short in a seriously unbalanced way. Now all I can do is to wait until it grows long enough to make another haircut to balance both sides. I'm so not going back. I'll give zero star if I can because all are periphery if they can't deliver the intended service. read more

Quite disappointed with services here. Asked for an ombré color with caramel going into blonde. I explained that I had no color on my hair (only highlights) so she used one application to do my entire head. I specified over and over again that I wanted NO RED. It works on other people, but not on me. No red. Not a hint of red, or orange, or copper, or strawberry blond. No no no red. No problem, she said, we'll just use a toner wash if it appears red after the color. After the wash my hair has zero blond. Only an all over caramel color. The stylist told me this was my fault as there MUST have been color on my hair. Sarcastically discussed this with another stylist in front on me and rolled her eyes which I caught in the mirror. She applied bleach and let it sit. STILL no blond. Just now a lighter caramel color. Quite disappointed $190 later. Went home and noticed all the copper. Flipping my hair over, the underside was copper. As were chunks of my ends. Talking to other stylists afterwards and they confirmed that I did not have previous color on my hair. Even if I did, she should have given the bleach more time to push through red into blond. The worst was how the stylist made me feel like compete sh*t. I'm sure they get people all the time that say they have virgin hair and DON'T and I'm sure that's frustrating. But at least wait until I'm out of earshot to blame me and roll your eyes at your co worker. read more

So I went here because this place had awesome reviews and I was new to the area, I hate going to new hair dressers because they always seem to mess up my hair and the last one before I came here I went to for 7 years, but then moved here from a different province so I didn't have a choice. After reading reviews I decided to get my hair done by Amanda. She seemed nice at first, but throughout the appointment she mostly talked about herself and her friends which I found quite annoying. And then there is my hair... I said I want the same style I had just cut an inch an half all over. Pretty simple right? Just leave the style the same and shorten it?! Wrong. She made almost all my layers one length..now I am no hair dresser, but even I know this looks stupid when someone gets layers all the same length. I also have natural curly hair and in this humidity there is no point in straightening my hair. So because of these "fantastic" layers, I now have a boxy looking layers that is above my shoulder and then the rest of my hair at boob level and looks thin and not even at all. I usually diffuse my hair because it makes my hair looks nicer, but I hate this cut so much that I have just been air drying it so the ends of my hair wont break off and I can go get it fixed by someone else later. I have been counting down the days to get my hair fixed. It is going to take me roughly about 6-9 months to get my hair back to where it was...not happy. I literally paid $65 to look like crap. I have been looking for a new hairdresser for a while, not being satisfied with either quality of the work (at various places) or the prices (Sukis). Having decided that I wanted to cut my hair short, once again, I ventured to try out Zoom Hair Salon as I was passing by it on daily basis and it looked nice on the inside. Their online booking system made it easy to get an appointment the next day. After reading through the employees' profiles, I picked Ivy as my hairdresser and was not disappointed! I scheduled my appointment for a haircut only, but the night before, I decided that I also wanted to dye my hair blond (my natural hair colour being brown). When I mentioned it to Ivy upon my arrival, she was very accommodating and as she did not have another appointment right after, she was able to do both, cut and dye my hair. As I had not fully decided on the hair style, Ivy listened to my concerns and ideas and recommended what she thought would look best and explained to me the different options of dying my hair, from highlights to full colour. During the whole processes, I was offered tea and the overall atmosphere was very enjoyable. This salon is very lovely, especially on a sunny day. Three and a half hours later (and ~ $150 : $45 hair cut + $100 for colour), I walked out of the salon looking and feeling excellent. I had an asymmetrical short haircut that was quite edgy, complemented by the bold blond colour. My husband, being a hard fashion critic, loved it, despite his earlier insistence that I should not cut my hair too short. I would definitely recommend Ivy for her thorough and fashionable work! read more

I have been to zoom 3 times and seen 3 different stylists. The last time I went, they really messed up my colour. They knew I wasn't happy! My hair turned brassy red - just what I was afraid of!! The cut was pretty good last time but I didn't like how it was styled. Other times I have gone the colour was good but not the cut. Why don't they keep track of what colour they use? Unhappy! After posting this review, I was contacted by the owner asking if I would like come in and she will fix the colour. I really appreciated the offer but I have already had the colour fixed by another salon. There is nothing worse than bad hair! Anyways, it was a nice offer and shows the owner is sincere in wanting happy clients. Just got my hair cut by Natalia! She did an amazing job, just as I was expecting. I got an a-line bob, and she took the time to make it just right. She listened to all my requests and warnings about my hair (wavy, thin but crazy amounts in the back, etc) and incorporated it into an awesome hair cut. Raven is a really talented stylist. Her mission was to transition a mane of naturally dark brown hair to blond - not an easy ask. She smartly decided upon a 3 step lightening plan to maintain the health of my hair, with a hip, natural looking balayage lightening and coloring. I'm at step 2 and it looks great and still feels super healthy. The rest of the staff likewise make you feel like part of the family and offer up tea and fancy hand lotions to play with. If you're canine friendly, Zoro will gladly cuddle on a warm lap. read more

I went to this salon, referred by a friend, this was approx 5 years ago. I just asked if there was someone there I could make an appointment with for a color I knew was not going to be easy. The new girl who was also answering the phones at the time jumped right in and said "I can do it", and even though the senior stylist should have said something they just let her do whatever, even when she would try to ask the other hairdressers question's during my color, I really felt like they were being cold towards her, not sure if it was because she was new and they were trying to make her look like a fool or if it was because she was young blonde and pretty. Either way I felt the tension in the room which made me sad because most salons I've been to the hairdressers have each others back and I didnt feel that at all. It turns out that new girl did pretty good the first time, the 2nd time she was getting a bit full of herself since she was no longer the new girl and my hair looked like... well I'm sure you know what I was going to say. I never went back, not sure if it is owned by the same person but if so hopefully you have learned to work as a team instead of acting the immature school kids. Best balayage I have ever had. I have dark brown thick hair, friendly staff and my hair stylist, Ivy was amazing.

I have always been fearful of men cutting my hair... as I have had bad experiences in the past. I was bit worried about Jeffery at first, but he is actually amazing! He loves what he does and truly takes the time and care to make sure your hair is fabulous! The wash, cut and style! He gets into a trance while blow drying and sends me home feeling like Barbarella! He loves his craft and I would most certainly recommend him to everyone!! Ally also did a great job washing my hair at my last appointment! WARNING! If you plan on going to this salon,you're making a big mistake! I got the worst haircut possible. I do not even want to call it a "haircut" because they completely ruined my hair. It lacked style and precision. I have tried many different salons, stylists, and this "cut" was by far the worst I have ever had. After the stylist butchered my hair, I had to hunt for another salon that was open to fix the hideous mess on my head. When I did find someone to FIX MY "cut", the stylist said she had done many "fixes" and my hair cut was the worst hack job she had ever seen. She had to cut off an additional 2 inches just to save some style. She was nice enough to charge me only for a bang trim because she felt so horrible that someone had butchered my hair like they had.
