The owner is really the centerpiece of the place --- friendly, conversant in several languages, and happy to tell how he followed the girl of his dreams to Switzerland 30+ years ago. (The only other staff member we met has an annoying affinity for loud vacuum cleaners). Rolling in post-hike on a Saturday, the owner mentioned he was out of several fillings; in particular, the eggplant-and-peppers Betenjan that grabbed my eye first wasn't available. That turned out to be fine, as the standards he did have were excellent. Our group ended up with a mix of lamb Shish Kebab, veggie Falafel, and simple Hummus. All were heavily laden with extras --- veggies, lettuce, a sweet chutney that nicely complemented the main flavors, and hot sauce to order. The hummus and falafel options are variations on a theme --- either a large scoop of hummus and two falafel balls, or 6+ falafel balls and a small dollop of hummus. The lamb in the shish kebab is in large, tender chunks, and nicely roasted. The bread is much more substantial than many pitas --- more of a crusty roll, but so filled with goodies that the ratios are still right. Drinks are fairly standard --- a few beers and sodas, boxed Ayran yogurt drink, and a giant urn of oddly spiced tea by the glass. Definitely a must-eat for a day around Solothurn.

Late for lunch and early for dinner but was able to get the veggie antipasti and a burger. The antipasti was a bunch of flavor bombs. The pesto and tomatoes were excellent. The olives I wanted to take home with me. So tender and full of flavor in olive oil and a little rosemary, the Parmesan with drizzled balsamic was great and so were the zucchini slices. Kept going back for the flavored almonds for some tasty crunch in between. A good burger filled the empty spot in my belly after a long travel day with no breakfast or lunch. A cold local beer went along perfectly. Lots of other things I wanted to try but bad timing! If you're in Solothurn this is a place to hang out for a drink at a minimum.

One of our local friends showed us this place, otherwise we would have passed it up. It is a large building, but doesn't look like much from the outside. Upon entering, I was impressed by how they had maintained the historical wooden beams of the roof, and floated from the ceiling the offices upstaris, and added the modern elements for the restaurant. It all worked perfectly together.There is a large interior, and a fantastic terrace overlooking the river with seating. However, this place gets packed on a warm summer day, and the drinks are served outside, not inside, so you have to fight your way to the bar to get yourself a drink. Once you find a place to sit, it is a fantastic venue to enjoy an evening with friends.

This evening confirmed the power the service can have over the restaurant experience. Take out the server, and this would have been a consistent 4 star rated restaurant for me. The ambiance of the restaurant is amazing. During the summer their is an amazing large outdoor garden like terrace with lights glowing from the trees above. I could not complain about the food. Also, for a nice Italian restaurant, the prices were standard Swiss compared to equivalent places I have been to in the Vaud or Geneva canton. Thus, it all came down to the service. Upon first being seated, our server never once smiled (with anyone), it was definitely a bad day. Plus, she seemed to not be able to speak English, which we later learned was not the case. The server was pushy and irritating, and rude at the beginning. However, our local friend in town happened to be coming down the street and saw us. He stopped in to say hi. He is a frequent visitor to this restaurant and knows the owners. Upon hearing about our experience, he spoke to the owner. Following which, our server came back and seemed to be a completely different person (even spoke perfect English!). The grumpy attitude was gone, and the remainder of our time was completely night and day different. It was as if someone else inhabited her body. At first, when I was beginning to write this review in my mind I was set on two stars, however, by the end of the evening, my overall review settled at four stars. This could potentially even be a five star if the service is consistently good. I guess I will just have to go back and try sometime. :)
