Up on the Paddington end of Crown Street, one is presented with many terrific options for dining out. I was craving Japanese the other day and so a friend and I ducked into Zushi for dinner. We walked past the long sushi bar and I stopped a moment to watch the diligent chefs fast at work. We were escorted through the restaurant and up the stairs to a section of tables overlooking the ground floor. With minimalist wooden tables and stools, low lighting and an intricate wooden sculputure that sprawls across the ceiling, it definitely demands that the next time you're here, you best bring a hot date. We started with an order of gyoza and a small assorted sashimi plate. The sashimi was very fresh and included tuna, salmon, another white fish, and two thin pieces of trout belly. I found the trout to be the most flavourful and interesting out of the four. Next, our Ocean Roll arrived ($18). For me, this was the obvious top runner of the meal. Ocean trout, cucumber and avocado made up the bulk of the roll and was topped with seared trout belly, mustard mayo, sweet soy and tobiko. The seared trout gave the roll a smokey, almost BBQ taste, which was perfectly complimented by the mustard mayo. It is clear that the geniuses behind Zushi have crafted their menu with care and creativity. The flavour pairings are definitely some of the most interesting I've seen. Go to Zushi, grab some wine and some starters and go nuts with the custom inside-out rolls. You won't regret it.

Quit a nice place is you want sashimi or a fresh salad. I would recommend it for lunch or dinner or if you just meeting with a group of friends. Everything was fresh and delicious here. Check it out!

This is three stars for the service. The service is non-existent. I understand Australian restaurants do not provide service but even given such standards, the service is between average and quite poor, so no tip. The upstairs is nicely decorated and the blowfish painted on the wall looks cool and seems appropriate, although I didn't see fugu on the menu... The food came quickly and was DELICIOUS. Food rating is really four or four and a half stars. The salad sampler to share is four traditional offerings but done really well. The seaweed and cabbage were pickled to perfection, the daikon and carrot coleslaw was spot on, and there was another blend of greens with house peanut-sesame dressing which was to die for. The sashimi platter small had snapper, kingfish, tuna and salmon on it all very fresh and tasty. My partner's ocean roll was outstanding, as someone else's review notes, the trout on top was smoky and gave the whole roll a pungent flavor almost like bbq. The last dish we had was the eggplant to share, which came out in two large sections cut straight from the plant and obviously cooked whole, covered in a savory and sweet miso glaze. Eggplant can tend to be a bit greasy if fried, and I'm not sure if this was grilled to avoid that flaw or if it was just fried well enough not to be saturated, but it was PERFECT. Moist, cooked through, fell apart with chopsticks, the sauce was like butterscotch on dessert and I could have eaten three more just like it. A bit awkward to break apart with the chopsticks, was served with a giant wooden spoon but I don't really know what to do with that. All in all I would probably go back for lunch to try some more Zushi sushi deals, as dinner was a bit on the expensive side, but reasonable given how good the food was. Our four dishes for two people was $65.

There was 6-7 people cooking on Friday night, one people at each station. Thus the food come out very quickly! We learn the hard lesson by making a mistake of ordering everting at once. Sure enough all the 8 dishes were delivered within 20 minutes.... make sure to place your order one to two dishes at a time. Food was good. Yakitori juicy, Hotate was fresh, seaweed salad, grilled mackerel, all dishes we ordered were pretty good. Old fashioned fries are a good deal (for Aussie price). Plenty of sake choices. You can choose from 100ml or 300ml so you can taste a little first, to see which one you like. I'll come back here again.

I did have a higher expectation with the food after reading all these 4/5 star reviews but nothing we ordered was really memorable. Maybe I did not order the right things? Good as a place to meet up with friends and have a drink but if you are looking for higher quality of Japanese fare, you might need to go somewhere. Just be careful the portion is tapas style and your bills can quickly added up if you want to have a full meal here.

(Please read October 2018 update, can't be arsed doing yet another review of Makoto, but the news…read moreis good!) This hurts. For 15 years I've been enjoying that feeling of having a special place thats pretty much perfect. Where the guys knew me and the food was way above the rest. Makoto was the best Sushi Train I'd ever been to and it was fully 1 minutes walk down the road. So I went a lot, I mean at least 800 times. The value was there. My favourites were the tempura king prawn hand roll, the king prawn and omelette hand roll and the most basic of all, the salmon sushi. Thing was, all the offerings were fresh generous and delicious. Last year a new owner came in. You don't need to read anymore if you, like me, know what that always means. The first to go was James who had been there from the start. Most of the staff went because they put in the ubiquitous computer screen ordering system. Then they removed all the old prawn dishes. All of them. Now you are lucky if you get a pre prepared frozen crumbed prawn covered in a mayo mess. Then they reduced the sizes of every dish on the train so the salmon was much smaller. All my favourites disappeared or were scrimped. Then they put all the prices up. The next thing to go was the queue, then the regulars stopped going. Now there's barely anyone there at 12 noon when there used to be a wait for ten to fifteen minutes. I'll still go now and then because its still fresh and its still close. The really sad thing is that I see people there who never saw what it used to be - they probably think that this is a pretty good place, they don't know what it was like. Sigh. Update October 2018 The tempura king prawns hand rolls are back!!!! The other day they had the old cooked prawn and mayonnaise gunkan on the train, its not back full time but at least it made an appearance! The salmon sashimi is no longer scrimped upon. Its back to its old size. Back to 5 stars for the prawn hand rolls alone. Thank you God, I really missed those things. And they are still on the blue plates, which have been bumped from $3.60 to $3.80 - so what - 20c!! Two words - yaa. hoo.

This a big call but I think this is the best sushi train in Sydney!! Genrally I don't like sushi…read moretrains but this is certainly an exception. The seafood is always fresh and of a high grade. However this does come at a price and you will certainly be paying for it. They have great Salmon sashimi but my favourites come off the menu, not the train and they are the omelette and king prawn hand roll and fisherman's soup. The Agedashi tofu ain't bad either ! I only wish less people knew how good this place is as sometimes the queue is pretty long.
