It was clear she takes pride in her work because she cooked with a smile on her face and her work area was spotless. I'm not Turkish but the food tasted like what I imagine home-cooked food in Turkey to be- delicious, simple, and filling. We've had peppers and eggplant at all the restaurants here but this one just tasted extra special. It was so delicious we asked for a second plate. The meatballs were also extra good, as was her roasted?? rice. Particularly surprising were the beans as I don't usually care for beans. Everything just tasted so flavorful. Our guide told us a lot of locals go there for lunch during their workday so there is fast turnover, which means the food is always fresh. It's is a simple place where you just walk up, she tells you what she has available, which she then she prepares for you and her son serves the food. I asked her to come home with me to CA but her son was pretty firm about not allowing me to kidnap his mom.

And while the food was indeed good, I was not nearly as impressed as I was with its next door neighbor, Cunda Sahil Restaurant. Firstly, Nihat is much pricier than any of the restaurants nearby. Secondly, the selection of foods (especially mezes) is not nearly that of other places. Normally, this wouldn't bother me as I prefer quality to quantity. However, the ones that Nihat had on tap weren't nearly as exciting or interesting or as tasty as others. We went for a late lunch/early dinner to avoid the rowdy dinner crowd, and we still had pretty lousy service (though not as bad as that of other reviewers). We ordered a variety of seafood and vegetable appetizers because summer is not really "fish season". The seafood mezes (especially what I believe were the squid eggs based in an olive oil/saffron broth) were the best of the bunch. I'm glad we went just so we could experience it. But, honestly, the experience once was enough.

Start with a selection of mezes, tapas like small plates, best enjoyed with a dose of raki. The menu is extensive. Avoid selecting from the menu. Go to the kitchen to view the mezes and chat with the chef to get his recommendations. Octopus salad, fried fresh calamari and turnip greens with garlic yoghurt are highly recommended. When going for fish, ask for fish that is line caught. Bream (çupra) and bronzini (levrek) are often farm raised. Taste is acceptable but nowhere close to line caught fresh counterparts. The chef at Yelken (who is also the owner) seems very honest. Our interest in line caught fish led to his recommendation for Sinarit, which was amazing grilled. They will also debone your fish if you choose to do so. For desert, make sure and try Aphrodisiac, a local dessert with ice cream, that is a true delight. Top it off with Turkish coffee. Don't forget the reservations. Many new customers were rolling in near midnight as we were leaving.
