Blown away. My wife told me this food hall is ranked the 7th best in the world. I think such rankings are silly, but between its historical feel, the variety of its offerings, and its pure aesthetic appeal, we thought Saluhall was an amazing place to eat. We came specifically for a Skagen toast lunch at Lisa Elmqvist but there was so much more there to explore and sample. Lots of varied price points, good for all budgets - but with a seeming emphasis toward higher quality options than you'd typically find in a food hall. And the grandeur of the hall itself was tough to forget. Love this food court hall. They have everything from bakery baked goods, to seafoods, to meats, to candies, and so forth. They also have restaurants, bars, both downstairs and upstairs and outside too. Plenty of choices and stalls to shops. It's not stuffy but it it's very spacious and roomy to walk around. Östermalms Saluhall is a food hall that has been open since 1888! And it's one of the best food halls I've ever been to. Bright, high ceilings, with beautiful stands. You can tell it's old - it still has historic charm - but it's also completely modern. Tons of seating (indoor and outdoor), lots of stands/vendors. I was also really impressed by how many walking snacks vendors offered - like cones of cheese?! We picked up a cone of smoked salmon (laxnuggets), which was a great walking around snack. It's great market. I highly recommend checking it out for a meal or a snack or a souvenir or a drink if you're in the area. read more

Our food tour met up here and the first stops we had on the tour were here. This brilliant red brick building was originally built in 1888 and you can see the inner cast iron construction here and there. The kiosks have an "old" look and feel to them though the market was reopened following an extensive renovation in 2020 and was awarded Stockholm's "Building of the Year" in 2021. Produce, fish, cheeses, meats, candy, coffee, baked goods. Aisles can be a bit narrow here and there. Restrooms are clearly marked and there's just so much food that you'll be challenged to just pick one. This is a higher end market and the prices reflect that. Stockholm's famous food hall! I got there right when it opened so it was empty and all the counters were setting up. First of all, make sure to take in the beautiful architecture (both outside and inside)- I thought the ceiling with the tall pillars was especially breathtaking. Also breathtaking- the selection of foods! Check out the stalls featuring whole fresh fish and smoked fish, produce that's just too pretty to eat, and all the baked goodies and cheese and more. I do love the idea of these big inside markets, what a great venue for year around shopping and support to local businesses. It reminds me of our eastern market, except it's closed in. This is quite an impressive foodhall. Lots of interesting counters and restaurants. Besides some typical swedish food, fish and seafood there are some really specialties to find. Lots of game meat (deer, moose, reindeer etc.), real Japanese Wagyu (in different qualities and price ranges) and also even bear meat (!) - which I really didn't feel like trying. An interesting selection of cheese from all over the world and so much more. We planned to eat at the famous Lisa Elmqvist. But - even though it was sunny - they didn't open the outside tables. And our dog wasn't welcome inside. Prices were beyond reasonable anyways, including the wine prices. So we headed to the Tysta Mari - good fish and reasonable (enough) prices. Outside tables - dogs welcome. We were happy with it. So all in all a fine experience. Most products here were a bit beyond our budget, but a fun visit nonetheless. read more

The difference between a foodie back in 1888 til now? None. Stockholm's love for food and design aesthetic runs deep in their veins. Back in 1888 when this indoor market was constructed, the red brick design was way ahead of its time. Inside you'll find well organized, wooden food stalls selling the finest wines, cheese, desserts, cooked food for take out, Smørrebrød, meats, coffee and seafood. Lisa Elmqvist is a nice sitdown restaurant/deli where you can sample the best toast skagen (prices are slightly higher than other stalls). But it was Husman's Deli that caught our eye and we loved sitting at the counter! We tried the traditional Köttbullar (Swedish meatballs) and Kåldolmar (cabbage roll filled with minced beef) The house pickled cucumber and lingonberry jam made my mouth very, very happy. A crisp Italian white wine helped cut through the richness of the gravy. If I had another day in Stockholm, I'd spend it here. Just being in the presence of the heady aromas, the interesting sights and sounds from tourists and locals alike, makes you feel alive. This is what traveling is all about. read more

When we lived in Stockholm ('94-99) this was the best place to get top quality food...bread, fish, meat, cheese...you name it, but in addition you could eat outside these "stalls" too...always great to do...but of course this all comes at a price...and you are in Stockholm which is already pricey So we thought let's have a wander around the market and eat at a stall...ALERT...they are setting up a pavilion and moving the stalls but, we understand, not their cafes very soon...and renovating the whole place...it will take 3 years!!!! Reminds me of borough market in London! Awesome location to walk around and checkout the different stalls. Lots of groceries, sweets, meats & fish. Most items are pricey but still fun to checkout! We stopped at a wrap stall with a small bartop to eat at. It was delicious! One of the few places in the city where we felt like we got some fresh veggies/healthy food for such an affordable price (approx. $8 USD). Ostermalms Saluhall is a great place to wander and gaze upon an array of Swedish specialties. I was unaware it was at a temporary site across the street but it's still equally as impressive. You can walk around here for over an hour, enjoying each display and trying small bits of the fair. Everything is incredibly fresh and well done. They have everything you could think of. My only criticism is that most of the staff at each stall seemed annoyed and didn't have much of a desire to help. Also, the lack of seating. read more

I'm a sucker for markets, but a old school (thanks, Janice C. for the specific date: 1888) market? I'm in, hook, line and sinker. And speaking of hooks (lines, sinkers)...this market really celebrates seafood. I saw some beautiful fish that I had never before seen. So fresh, so beautiful. Smoked salmon. Caviar. For the picnic-minded, there is a great opportunity to purchase some wine, cheese and other nibbles here. Add to that list: baked goods and little canapes with smoked fish. If the weather isn't the best you can stay put and have a (short) respite from the hustle-bustle of the market sitting in the cordoned-off area and enjoying a glass of something with a smorrebrod. Fresh, fresh is the order of the day. All the food spied on tables was beautifully presented. People are exceptionally nice, too. I got two iced lattes at the coffee shop within the market and the woman working there offered her last buns 2-for-1 to the couple behind me. I've seen attitude from vendors at UK markets towards people taking photos of everything around them (even though, yes, I can concede that the 'Instagram papparazzi' can sometimes be too much at markets). Really fun place, definitely worth a trip if you're visiting Stockholm. This market is a combination of small markets and casual, sit-down restaurants inside the market. There's a lot of chocolate, baked goods, produce, cheese, and meat for sale, anything you'd normally expect to find in an open market like this. Very fun to just walk around. We decided to eat at the seafood place for lunch, I can't remember the name unfortunately, but they had blue and white check tablecloths, if that helps. Are you looking for some fresh flavours of Stockholm and are you a first time visitor to Sweden who is very unfamiliar with Swedish food culture? This place should probably be your first place for arrival. This is a large market that serves a variety of fresh meat and produce as well as popular Swedish dishes such as open faced sandwiches, Swedish meatballs, and cinnamon buns. If Melbourne, Australia has the Queen Victoria Market, then Stockholm, Sweden has Östermalms Saluhall. I had to convince a guy and four ladies to come with me to this place before we went to the Stockholm Archipelago. By the time I took them inside, they seemed pretty impressed with the interior and the presentations of the food at this place. I got a salmon open faced sandwich from Tysta Mari and a small bag filled with Swedish meatballs from another stall. The Swedish Meatballs were pretty good, and not too expensive. I remembered the savoury flavour and the warm meatiness. The salmon open faced sandwiches are a little expensive, at 160 SEK, but were pretty delicious. I remember the salmon being so fresh and the flavours from the garnishes were great complements to the salmon. Overall, this place is probably a good preview of what Swedish food culture is like for the first time visitor to Stockholm or the country of Sweden. I would not come here often if you are on a budget, but I think it's a great opportunity to sample some of the famous dishes of Sweden before going to cheaper alternatives that you could hopefully find. This place will be memorable to me because it was the starting point of one of my best memories of Sweden and one of the best days I had in Europe. read more

The Saluhall in the Ostermalm neighborhood of Stockholm is awesome. Since 1888 it has been filled with Swedish vegetables, dairy products, and meats. And of course they have Swedish fish and seafood. They have so many different types of sill fish and strömming, it's hard for me to choose. And now at this time of year, be on the lookout soon for kräftor (crayfish). Summer is the time to party and eat kräftor in Sweden! The market is a short walk from Central Stockholm. And don't forget there are also restaurants inside where you can have lunch or a snack. And watch in the next few years as the Saluhall is restored to its original star design and adds more restaurants and covered courtyards. If you're in Stockholm, just go here. This is a really nice place to come for a leisurely lunch time stop. The hall is packed full of stalls with traditional Swedish produce, the majority of it really well priced. There's everything from a giant fish counter to cakes, fresh salads and jars of pickled unidentifiable produce. FUN. It took us about an hour to walk around the whole thing, and we ended up buying a lot of souvenirs/presents from here as well as lunch. With family in Stockholm, this market was one of our first stops to pick up food items for a home meal. It is the premiere food market in Stockholm. Open from 9:30 AM to 6 PM most days, and there are many tourist who move through in awe, as demonstrated by prior reviews. My advice here is to go in with a meal plan in mind. Choose your raw ingredients and head off to one of the many parks in the area for a shared meal. We like to stop in before heading back to the States to pickup salads, breads, and sandwiches for the flight back. Ask your hotel kitchen to store it in the fridge overnight if needed. Premium wines, meats, cheeses, breads, fish, and greens can all be sourced within the market. Be prepared to pay. Prices are fair for the quality, but they are not cheap. Where the Swedish upper class do their weekly grocery shopping along with tourists who just don't care about the price. This is the kind of place where you see something delicious and ask to buy half a pound of it and when they tell you the price, you run away out of a mix of pure shock and shame. Meanwhile, one of those upper class old bags is buying six gallons of said food to feed her dog. Nice to just look around and then buy cheaper substitutes elsewhere. Nice food hall with a lot of delecacies. A bit high priced if not overpriced compared to e.g. other good alternatives in Stockholm. The entrance doors shows clearly that dogs are not allowed. However today at least 4 dogs were in side the hall and they were not service dogs. Why? Swedes seems not to understand rules and/or do not respect the rules. Holy Swedish Heaven On A Stick, this place blew our minds. My traveling companion and I are from San Francisco, a resoundingly foodie city, so we were prepared to be underwhelmed with Swedish food but we were blown away everywhere we went in Stockholm to eat, and the Saluhall was a highlight of an afternoon spent wandering through town (Rolf's Kok was our other favorite; see my review). The food is so PRETTY (from the charcuterie to the pastries to the berries to the fish), all arranged like jewelry, with a particular emphasis on fresh seafood - my friend had her birthday lunch at one of the stalls there (salmon and shrimp smorrebrod, a seafood stew, and a lobster roll she kept calling a 'little lobster burrito,' to my amusement) and it was just delicious. We had champagne with our lunch and that felt very civilized. The Saluhall was the only place she came even close to hunting down a cloudberry - in the form of a cloudberry jam, which that girl dragged through five European cities in her suitcase to get home, mind you - and featured fresh produce and charming little cakes from an outpost of Vete-Katten, I believe. There were also just quirky (Scandinavia does quirky so well) little items all over (see my ram's head photo) to enjoy. This was one of our favorite places in Stockholm; well worth a visit and a leisurely lunch after browsing around. read more

Walked around the area trying to find this indoor market and lo and behold there it was in this inconspicuous door. Walking in you are greeted with stands and stands of meat counters, seafood counters, cheese, restaurants, and more. After walking around for a bit, we decided to eat at Lisa Elmqvist Fisk, Skaldjur, Delikatesser o. Restaurang. After being seated, the waitress brought over a basket of bread and we looked over the menu. Decided on the Toast Skagen and the Avocado Alexandra. The Toast Skagen was amazing. Mixed shrimp with mayo, dill, and other herbs atop a piece of toast. The shrimp was piled high and enough to feed two people. The Avocado Alexandra was less salty and equally amazing. A bit sweeter with a mixture of seafood and mayo mixed into a halved avocado, a slice of salmon and a few springs of arugula. After eating salty fish throughout the Nordic, it was good to finally have something not as salty. The service was pretty good. It was pretty busy but they came around once in a while to check in. You have to try one of the restaurants in this indoor market and grab some meats, chocolate, or cheeses. A great place to relax and recharge for more sightseeing. It's a beautiful red brick building with it's Neo Gothic architecture style, built by both architects Kasper Salin and Isak Gustaf Clason. There is a good choice of all kind of fish, cheese, meat, patisserie etc. and there are also some restaurants where you can take a seat and enjoy some meal. Walked in the door and smelled tourist trap immediately. I was with friends who had check-marked this as a place they "had to visit". Sat down to a 115kr IKEA quality swedish meatball plate that was microwaved in front of my eyes. Ate here twice during my 10-day stay in Stockholm and loved it every time. Although I walked around and eagerly gazed into the display cabinets as my mouth watered for all the yummy food, I ended up eating at the same restaurant twice because I loved the Elk patties with mashed potatoes with a delicious side of lingonberry. The gravy? Incredible. And they have a delicious light beer that I really enjoyed. The staff are very friendly and helpful with recommendations and the portions are destined to keep you full for at least 5-6 hours. Today I visited the temporary saluhall market. I came here for lunch and had a great surprise to find BBQ ribs on one the restaurants menus. We got nachos and ribs with a beer and margarita which came to about €55. Or 500 krona. My ribs came with chips or a baked potato and coleslaw. The ribs were good however the marinade was very rich for me. The nachos were also very good, the beans were delicious but the nachos were quite chewy. My overall experience here was really good. I would come again. The hall itself is really nicely laid out, lots to choose from and really cool to walk around. I imagine the permanent market was much better in terms of decor and layout but for what it is I really enjoyed it. -1 for the marinade and the hall feeling a bit rough. It's really well designed but there are places were it feels like we are visiting a temporary location, which is a shame after the effort that has gone into it. I'm not sure how well it will hold up over 2 years but maybe they will make some tweaks in between. read more
