In December 2012, on OBB, the per person fare is approximately 50 Euro whereas it is 25 Euro per person on Westbahn (but note, for some reason our credit card did not work so we paid cash like everyone else). Plus, on the WB, you get a leather seat, an in-seat electrical outlet, and free wifi that was pretty speedy. The trains leave Salzburg every hour or two. The 2.5 hour trip will be up before you know it. Just get on board and buy your ticket from the attendant once you are underway. If headed from Salzburg to Vienna, pick up an assortment of inexpensive groceries from the SPAR market in the train station to have a picnic lunch on board. NOTE: OBB will not tell you about this line of train service. There will be little to no signage about WB in the train station.... that is because WB is new competition for OBB... Check with your hotel or the WB's website for information.

Go for the stunning view!…read more Had limited time to explore Salzburg after our walking tour. Our guide recommended using the lift at Monchsbergaufzug to reach the top of the mountain for a beautiful view of the city. Walked from the walking tour to the end of the shopping street. Then hugged the street along the mountain to find the elevator lift entrance. It is where the lift goes to the Modern Art Museum. Paid €4.80 for a round trip tickets. Less than a minute later, we were at the viewing platform. Wow! What a view!! Definitely worth the trip up and the lift saved us valuable time as we only had a couple of hours to explore independently. So nice to see the rooftops of the cathedrals, the fortress, city hall and the river with several bridges. Stunning!! Also spent a few minutes looking at Sky Space by American light artist James Turrell. An unexpected find. Definitely go for the views....and if you are short on time. Take the lift.

That said, the view at the top of it is tremendous…read more Mönchsbergaufzug is the elevator that brings you up Mönchsberg, one of the mountains in Salzburg as well as to the entrance of the Museum der Moderne Salzburg which is situated on it. The elevator is your standard version. It isn't see through so there is no view to speak of. And the elevator ride is very brief. Cost of taking the elevator up and down is €3.60. Though you get one free ride if you have a Salzburg Card. I would combine this trip with a visit to the Museum der Moderne at the same time if you do. When you do exit the elevator, make your way to the right and head outside the doors. There you will find a viewpoint which is a terrific place to take aerial pictures of Salzburg. If you are looking for a Facebook friendly place to take pictures of your trip to this beautiful city, make your way to this elevator.
