We visited the post office on two separate occasions to buy stamps and send some postcards. All of the postcards were going to the US except one that was sent to Canada. None of the US postcards ever arrived but the Canadian postcard arrived. It's true the post officer workers were a bit surly but that's standard right? Not sending mail is a federal offense in the US I imagine, but I guess it's ok in Austria if you hate Americans? Seriously, it's not possible to lose that many postcards unless it's on purpose. I wish I had sent the postcards from Innsbruck as I did not detect anti-American sentiment there. I think the government in Salzburg needs to reign in this post office.

The post office in question is just fine and provides good service to the hundreds of thousands of tourists and locals who frequent it every year! But how Mary could presume that merely because she finds the decor pretty and clean, it must be a privatized, i.e. non-governmental service, is frustratingly typical of the blithely ignorant Americans who wander the city with their rose-colored, Sound of Music glasses on. Geez Louise.... no country in its constitutionally right mind would privatize its postal services. Not even pretty little Austria.

Consider the Westbahn line, which offers fares between Vienna and Salzburg for half the price of…read morethe OBB outfit. In December 2012, on OBB, the per person fare is approximately 50 Euro whereas it is 25 Euro per person on Westbahn (but note, for some reason our credit card did not work so we paid cash like everyone else). Plus, on the WB, you get a leather seat, an in-seat electrical outlet, and free wifi that was pretty speedy. The trains leave Salzburg every hour or two. The 2.5 hour trip will be up before you know it. Just get on board and buy your ticket from the attendant once you are underway. If headed from Salzburg to Vienna, pick up an assortment of inexpensive groceries from the SPAR market in the train station to have a picnic lunch on board. NOTE: OBB will not tell you about this line of train service. There will be little to no signage about WB in the train station.... that is because WB is new competition for OBB... Check with your hotel or the WB's website for information.
