From Kendo's review
Apr 8, 2008
Monday was a crowded day at the bank. I ended up parking in a side lot as all of the closer parking I usually use was jam packed. Walking back to the car I noticed a small strip mall for the first time. I'm sure I noticed the building before as I've been to the BofA next door countless times for work stuff. I guess I just never bothered to check out what shops were there. It was pushing 2:30pm already and I still hadn't made up my mind for lunch, and then there it was. Sitting smack dab in the middle of this thus far overlooked strip mall stood Alondra Hot Wings. Walking in, it was nicer than I expected. Red painted walls adorned with black and white images of famous mobsters with nicely stained wood paneling made for a nice setting. As my eyes wandered down the long list of tasty morsels offered here I knew right then and there that this was going to take a couple days to review. Pics from both trips are up. Monday: Had to go with their Hot Wings. I couldn't very well go to a joint with a moniker like Alondra Hot Wings and not order them. 17 different sauces are available, most of which fall in the norm as far as chicken wing dips go with a few on the odd side such as Maple Syrup Wings. I went with the Original Hot and it had a decent kick. I'll probably kick it up a notch to X-Hot next time around (anything named Suicide Atomic makes me wimp out... not that I don't like the heat, but more that I don't want to pay the price later... lol...) I also went with a side of their Seasoned Fries. These were also quite good, and in addition to a thorough dusting of seasoning salt, there is a definite presence of parsley involved giving the fries a slight herby taste. I normally pass on the dessert options, but this time I had to do it. I've heard about these things. I've seen them on TV and at various fairs. Up until today I've been a Deep Fried Twinkie Virgin. It is sinfully sweet, and biting into this thing... once you get through the crunchy deep fried crust, it's like a candy-coated sugar star collapsed in on itself becoming a super dense sugary black hole. I feel a bit hyperactive now, but I'm sure a crash is due soon... Tuesday: Mike F rang and wanted to do lunch. I'm swamped at work today, but good thing Alondra Hot Wings is only 2 minutes away. He went with the Hot Wings and a Salad (He's kind of easing into a diet he tells me... lol...) and I tried a few more items. The Philly Steak Sandwich is fairly decent. It isn't too traditional, as they use big thick chunks of seasoned grilled ribeye steak, which was quite tasty, smothered with carmelized grilled onions, provolone cheese, and mayo. Rather than get the fries again, I opted to try out their Fried Tomatoes. These things were delicious! Tangy and tart red tomato wedges are buttermilk blend battered and deep fried to perfection. These suckers hold their heat as well (temperature-wise). And of course, I had to get an order of Cheese Balls to share with Mr. Diet Mike F. Cubed mozzarella cheese, wrapped in their home made pizza dough, then deep fried to a golden brown. From there it is tossed in a garlic and butter sauce and served with a marinara dip. Lip smackin' good. I tried to get Diet Mike F to get the Deep Fried Twinkie, but he wimped out. =P read more
