Honolulu has a lot of great restaurants when it comes to Asian food, especially Japanese, but it is not easy to find good European food. Luckily for us, there is Breadshop in Kaimuki, which is a bakery that sells excellent Danish and croissants. The place is owned by Christopher Sy, whom I was pleasantly surprised to learn is an alumna of my alma mater, the University of Chicago. He then went onto cook at some of the worlds best restaurants, including Tru, Alinea, and The French Laundry before coming back to Honolulu to open his new bakery.
We got the pastry box, which came with the Makaha Mango and Tolentino Honey Cake Danish, Kaya Calamansi Brioche Tart, Prosciutto and Gruyère Croissant, and Blueberry Corn Muffin Bostock. My friend that I went with is a judge on Food Network Canada's Top Chef Canada and we both agreed that the pastries here are on par with pastries that you can get in international cities like Paris, New York, and Tokyo using unique local ingredients.
I only wish that they had seating and that we could order and pay at the counter instead of online. Hopefully they will continue to be successful so that they will be able to get a bigger place in the near future. read more
