Our family tracked to Scranton for a basketball game @ Marywood. We targeted Dutchies on the recommendation of a Scranton native.
The format was unusual in that it appeared to be a carry out place- but with a dining room attached. You order & pay- then go sit and wait for your meal to be served. The dining room is more comfortable than a typical pizza place with a family warmth.
Our crew ordered chicken soup, burgers, pizza and a sub to go for out basketball player.
We selected their "Old Forge" style pizza- iconic to the region. It didn't disappoint. The crust was light & crispy, the sauce in the sweet side and the blend of cheeses (including American cheese which is the hallmark, I'm told, of the style). It was delicious. I am a pizza 'freak'. I've enjoyed pizza from iconic restaurants in Naples, Rome, Chicago, New York, California, Detroit and now...Scranton!
The burger people praised their 8oz. Burgers. The diner that enjoyed chicken soup (an accomplished cook) had high praise for the home made flavor and textures.
When you add that we were treated like family members of this family owned establishment, our experience was exceptional. My only "complaints" are that: the check was far less than expected and (more of an opportunity than a complaint) I would have spent $$ for a nice red wine to complement my meal. read more
