I tried to return an unused code reader, and they charged me a restocking fee plus tax. As far as I know, in Texas a restocking fee on an unused item is not taxable, but in this case they still charged tax. This is wrong.
Regarding the restocking fee, I admit it was my fault that I did not carefully read all the pricing details. However, if you look at the wording printed on the price tag, you would need a magnifier at 100× zoom to read it clearly. If a business wants customers to know that a restocking fee will be charged, it must be clearly displayed. In this case, the words "Subject to restocking fee" were printed in an extremely small font.
In the end, I was charged a 20% restocking fee, even though the percentage was never clearly disclosed. The bottom line is that a professional business should clearly post signage about the restocking fee and state exactly what percentage will be charged. I explained all of this and pointed out the lack of professionalism to both the cashier and the manager, but they did not respect my feedback and were still upset.
