Juli's Java is what I have wished for Covington for awhile! They went for quite awhile without a dedicated coffee shop, so they get a star just for existing. Bonus- the shop is in a decent sized space in one of the historic downtown buildings on the town square. They painted the walls a really pretty robins egg blue color, and with the tall ceilings and layout of the space, it feels plenty big! I admired the large round tables and the cozy front corner adorned with couches and armchairs. I could easily see myself bringing my laptop to work and hanging out here if the need should ever arise.
Now, the menu. Juli's surprised me by having coconut, almond and soy options available. BRAVO, JULI'S!! In a small town coffee shop, I don't usually expect to see non-dairy milk options. You all made my visit that much better by having it available - and only 50 cents extra. They have your pretty standard coffee options from what I noticed. I'm a tea drinker, so that's what I looked for on the menu. They have tea for $1.50, so more points for Juli's.
I ended up spontaneously ordering a pumpkin chai from the "fall favorites" board. I wanted coconut milk, but they had run out, so almond milk it was! The drink was really sweet and the chai flavor wasn't the best. That's not really their fault... I'm sure they use a powder and you can only do so much with that. It was okay, though! Just not the best chai I've ever had is all. My mom got an iced chai with coconut milk, but she barely drank any of it. She didn't like the chai taste, so much so that she couldn't make herself drink more than a couple of sips. I asked her how she'd rate just the drink from 1-5 stars and she said 1. I'd give mine a 3. My sister had a mocha, and she said she'd give it 2 starts because it wasn't the worst mocha she's ever had but it definitely wasn't the best.
I will say, the place was packed for Apple Fest and those baristas kept the line moving quickly and they were friendly and smiling the whole time. Another plus!
Overall, I'd come back. I'd try their teas and see how I feel about those. I probably won't get a chai latte again, but I don't need that much sugar anyway. ;) For Covington, I think this place is a big step in the right direction for coffee / tea. I'll look forward to coming by again in the future when I'm back in town. Total, 3.5 stars. read more
