Red Hook Tavern is well-known for being one of the best burgers in NY, so the wait here can get crazy. If you can get a reservation, I highly recommend it or else you may end up waiting hours. We arrived on a Sunday 20 minutes before opening at 5pm and there was a line of about 10 people ahead of us. In the first seating round, we ended up getting the second to last outdoor seating without the heaters, so it was a bit chilly. Since we were outside, I wished that the servers came around more often and were quicker with our food so we didn't have to sit there too long waiting in the cold.
To start off, I had the Isle Old Fashioned ($20) to drink and the Country Ham Croquettes ($15) to eat. The croquettes came out pretty quick and were nice and crunchy over a pool of dijonnaise sauce that went quite well together. The cheesy ham filling was gooey and creamy --nice, little appetizer. Finally, came the infamous Dry-Aged Red Hook Tavern Cheeseburger ($30), which took half an hour. When this burger comes out, it's definitely a beautiful sight. The cheese is perfectly melted over the thick and juicy beef patty with a layer of sliced, raw onions. The burger is so juicy, so it can get a bit messy. It's a classic and tasty, though it's quite pricey for all the popularity it has gotten. The cottage fries are a unique version of fries and the pickle is quite refreshing as it's not too pickled and sour.
It's a tasty and delicious burger, but not necessarily enough for me to wait again. Highly recommend getting a reservation if you want to try the burger here. Every table ordered at least one of these, so that says it all. read more
