8/1/25: This cemetery is also known as Rhode Island Historical Cemetery Middletown #11.
We were just walking around the back of the Howard Johnson Hotel parking area and stumbled upon this very old small historic cemetery.
The plots are barely visible. I could just make out that a few of these people passed in the 1800s.
Just love anything historical. I was curious, who were these people at rest here?
Rhode Island had so much history, I just had to do some research.
(According to a Newport Daily News dated November 12, 2018, it's catalogued as the "George Irish Lot"
on the Rhode Island Historical Cemetery Commission database, the 30-by-40-foot plot contains 18 burials, according to the commission's website. The vast majority of the stones demarcate family members who share the surname "Irish".
The cemetery is located on what used to be George Irish's farm).
(Legend has it that George Irish loaned the early U.S. government a large sum of money to help finance the revolution).
Presently, the large empty field across the street from the cemetery appears to be a farm from yesteryear.
I'll have to take a better look at this field, when up in the area again.
