Gravestones ponds and…read morequartz The Spring Vine Cemetery is a fairly large graveyard containing about 2,000 graves that was built in about 1850. Not really old, but old enough to be interesting since it contains a wide variety of different memorials. One of the most fascinating thing about the cemetery is the massive chunk of rose quartz that is located in the graveyard. Must weigh several tons and is almost certainly not indigenous to the cemetery, which means someone took a whole lot of effort to bring the huge stone here. There is no inscription on the stone so exactly when it was brought to the graveyard will remain unknown. The cemetery also has a nice little pond on the west side and some fairly large and interesting gravestones. No obelisks because they weren't quite in style yet but there are some pretty massive gravestones. A pleasant cemetery for a walk that is actually close to several other old graveyards. Flat ground and nice old trees makes it a cool place to spend a bit of time, if for nothing else just to check out the fabulous piece of quartz.

A lovely old…read morecemetery The Hillside Cemetery is located on an inlet of the Sakonnet River in the quaint old town of Tiverton, Rhode Island. A lovely place for a walk with distant views of the river and some nice rolling hills. The cemetery is quite huge with both new and very old parts. The oldest graves date back to the 18th century and of course there are others that look older but are now impossible to read. Lots of very cool and unique memorials and gravestones complete with unusual and archaic names and symbols. Some of the stones still look new and fresh while the softer stones are sometimes broken and worn down to virtually nothing. Hillside is a lovely old cemetery in a lovely old town. Many old graveyards have a spooky and morbid feel to them but not this one. I wouldn't exactly call it cheerful but it is a beautiful and historic area and a very nice place for a very peaceful stroll.

Bell graves and…read morecolonels The Union Cemetery is usually considered as part of the old Commons Graveyard right across the street. The two sort of merge into one and look quite similar. Lot of very old graves here, many dating back into the 1600's. Other s are just about gone, worn down to nubs that are impossible to read. This is a very cool graveyard with a whole lot of history. Fascinating going around from grave to grave reading the inscriptions. The ancient town green is here too and the Commons Graveyard Is actually right on the green. A cool old bell guards on side while a church is on the other. History and the feel of the past just permeates the entire area. Not a fancy cemetery with a lot of rich and opulent graves. Some pretty cool ones like a statue of a colonel and some small obelisks but all the markers and memorials blend together quite nicely with the ancient trees and wonderful old houses of the area. A graveyard that has been here for a long time. And I suspect one that will still be here long after I am gone.

Griffin Street Cemetery has a ton of history and stands proud as the first cemetery ever built in New Bedford. Early settlers are buried here as well as other local figures of historical significance. It would be a great joy to see this location pop up on the map and become part of the citizens memories. The area around the land is encroaching upon it and eventually it might be gone I fear. It is possible that I am a bit paranoid but it is a healthy paranoia stemming from my love for history and landmarks. If people conduct a search this very second on this location they will find articles and articles of information. New Bedford's library has a few pieces of material that people can read up on and they are actually good reads. It goes without saying that if we care about our home city, we can at the least, invest some of our time in showing them gratitude. To the people who don't live here or have lived here, I rated the place 5 stars out of respect for the dead. Regardless of whether a person was good or bad, we all deserve our peace.

Mayflower and mayor…read more The Ancient Little Neck Cemetery is indeed ancient. It was established in 1655 and the oldest recorded grave is John Brown, the guy that actually purchased the land that the graveyard is on from the native Wampanoag tribe. The spooky old graveyard has lots of very old graves, memorials and plaques and if you take a look at the top of the old flagpole you will notice that it has a carved skull on top. A whole lot of famous colonial New England folks are buried here, including Elizabeth Tilley Howland who came over on the Mayflower and died in 1667 and Captain Thomas Willett, who became the first English mayor of New York. The ancient graveyard is an absolutely fascinating place filled with plaques and memorials about shipwrecks, wars and disasters. It looks a bit worn in places and could probably use a bit of TLC but then the scruffy look just adds to the spooky and weird ambiance. One of the coolest and historic colonial graveyards in New England. Over 1,000 graves here from 1622 up till 1993 and of course all kinds of hauntings and bizarre things have been seen in the area. An amazing and historic place to spend some time with the people of the past.

I tried to find out who owned it and finally got a hold of a gentleman who claimed to be a commisioner several years ago that told me that the Chinese bought it and that it was only mowed twice a year! Then I was looking at some statistics that werent very promising that there were sources that said remains from plots had been flung over a wall so they could bury someone else in the plot! My heart sank thinking that my grandparents couldve been flung! I havent been back to the cemetery in awhile as I live in a different state now but I am interested to see what can be done about the state of the plots and headstones. I understand that it is a historical place and that it is ancient. However there is no excuse for it to have been let go like it has been. I wanted to buy plots if there were any available so that I could be near my grandparents but I doubt there are any left. It's my favorite because it is the largest LFL I've seen and it's inside of a retro gasoline pump. There were five shelves that were organized and fully stocked. I found some books I've been wanting to read and a classic that I've read before (The Great Gatsby). It's in a great location with plenty of foot traffic. There are plenty of parking in the area. If you're in the area and love books, I recommend you stop and check it out!
