So I can honestly say this is one of THE worst hair salon experiences I've ever had. I normally go to the Joseph Tyler salon in bedstuy but I moved to a new neighborhood and a friend recommended sophys as it's near by. Upon arrival I walked in to the shop and within a few minutes I was greeted. I showed them pictures of the style I wanted (a layered bob with color). They said ok and proceeded to wash my hair, and color it. I'm not sure of the stylists name but she was an older woman with long dark hair in a ponytail. She asks to see the pictures again and says "she has a lot of hair and you don't". By the tone of her statement you would've sworn I was snatched bald (which is not the case) but I digress. I sit in her chair for her to start the cut and she looks dazed and confused. She cuts my hair straight across (no layers) and immediately I'm getting concerned because it won't have volume as the pictures. She literally took 2 minutes to cut my hair and stuck me back under the dryer. In the midst of speed cutting/drying, I see a roach walk across the floor. Nice. While under the dryer I see another roach coming out to say hey to his homie. After I'm retrieved from the dryer she blows out my hair until it's bone straight and lifeless. The end result looks nothing like the photo and I'm bummed. The stylist goes "at least the color is nice" and I think "yeah because someone else did it". When she's finished she looks at my facial expression and shrugs like "idk". She's given up and so have I. All that to say I couldn't get out of there quick enough! I paid the bill, grabbed my jacket (shaking it off so I didn't take any friends home") gave her a few dollars as a tip (even though I was totally not happy) and left. So overall I will not be returning to sophys. The price wasn't bad ($50 for the cut and color) but I'd rather pay more for somebody that has the skill set to achieve the look I wanted. I've already made an appointment with my bedstuy stylist to correct my time at sophys. read more
