Let me start by saying I arrived with a plastic bag on my head. Told the owner I have a color treatment in my hair but I want a deep conditioner. Totally missed cuz Mariveah washed my treated it which burned the back of my head. Then it was roller or blow time. My hair is natural so I blowed followed by flat iron n trim. So I can honestly say this is one of THE worst hair salon experiences I've ever had. I normally go to the Joseph Tyler salon in bedstuy but I moved to a new neighborhood and a friend recommended sophys as it's near by. Upon arrival I walked in to the shop and within a few minutes I was greeted. I showed them pictures of the style I wanted (a layered bob with color). They said ok and proceeded to wash my hair, and color it. I'm not sure of the stylists name but she was an older woman with long dark hair in a ponytail. She asks to see the pictures again and says "she has a lot of hair and you don't". By the tone of her statement you would've sworn I was snatched bald (which is not the case) but I digress. I sit in her chair for her to start the cut and she looks dazed and confused. She cuts my hair straight across (no layers) and immediately I'm getting concerned because it won't have volume as the pictures. She literally took 2 minutes to cut my hair and stuck me back under the dryer. In the midst of speed cutting/drying, I see a roach walk across the floor. Nice. While under the dryer I see another roach coming out to say hey to his homie. After I'm retrieved from the dryer she blows out my hair until it's bone straight and lifeless. The end result looks nothing like the photo and I'm bummed. The stylist goes "at least the color is nice" and I think "yeah because someone else did it". When she's finished she looks at my facial expression and shrugs like "idk". She's given up and so have I. All that to say I couldn't get out of there quick enough! I paid the bill, grabbed my jacket (shaking it off so I didn't take any friends home") gave her a few dollars as a tip (even though I was totally not happy) and left. So overall I will not be returning to sophys. The price wasn't bad ($50 for the cut and color) but I'd rather pay more for somebody that has the skill set to achieve the look I wanted. I've already made an appointment with my bedstuy stylist to correct my time at sophys. read more

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, GO TO THIS SALON. ***especially*** if you're a black woman with natural hair. i've been to this salon about 3 times (in a 1 year period) because i live in the neighborhood and i go to get a wash/blowout before getting my hair braided. the last time i went, the woman working the second chair from the left, SEVERELY heat damaged my hair. when i washed it afterwards and realized it didn't revert, i went back to the salon (with my dominican roomate), so that i could get a refund. after showing the receptionist and the manager picture & video evidence of my SEVERELY heat damaged hair, they both said it was "impossible" for a blow dryer or flat iron to do that... when a simple google search will debunk that boldfaced lie. additionally, any legitimate hairstylist would know how heat damage can occur (even when using heat protectant) and how to prevent it. with my roomate translating, they said several disgusting racist remarks to me, and then refused to give me the owner of the salon's name or information. i didn't get even a partial refund or an offer/attempt to fix my completely damaged hair. so again, ABSOLUTELY DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, GO TO THIS SALON. read more

Terrible salon. They don't care about the health of your hair, and god forbid if you're African-American with natural hair. They will charge you more regardless of whether your hair responds to heat or not. And to make matters worse, one of the ladies had the NERVE to tell me I needed a perm! I was going to give them another chance even after they burned me with the blow dryer on my last visit, but after that perm comment, I walked straight out and will never return. As it was my very first time there, I was very skeptical. I was very pleased with the results of both my daughter and my hair and would go back again. It was ok. Nothing that would make me go back. She didn't give me any ear covers, She saw that I was holding my ears because the heat was burning them, I had to ask for ear covers. She did not have any so she gave me a towel to use. Ok fine, problem is the towel smelled like fish!!! Ugh. In the end my hair did come out nice even though she burned me with the blow dryer and didn't even apologize. Won't be returning. My search for a good knowledgeable hair stylist goes on. I have no complaints about any stylist in this salon. They all treat my hair good, but I do go to one person for my perms and cuts. Only because she was recommended years ago by a friend, and that's who I felt comfortable with. She respects my decisions and gives great tips. Her name is Dinorah, and I like the fact that the other ladies respect that and would never ask to cut or perm unless I say so. But these women are great. read more
