I was in dire need of a re-evaluation of my vision and I was long overdue for an annual check up. I've been going to the same ophthalmologist in Hawaii Kai for years but when we moved to west Oahu, Hawaii Kai seems like a world away. I still maintain that going to an ophthalmologist is my preferred choice for vision care but if you're fairly healthy and no ongoing chronic issues with your vision, an optometrist would be ok. Sween Optometry is located inside Costco in Kapolei. Dr. Sween is an independent physician not working for Costco but has an office inside by the optical department. I had called ahead to see if they were taking walk ins and was politely told that it would be better to make an appointment as there would be know way they could tell how soon I would get in that day since they already had scheduled appointments and a few walk ins already. No problem. An appointment was made and two weeks couldn't come soon enough as I was truly struggling "seeing" with my old, prescribed lenses. I love Dr. Sween!! He's a bit OCD like myself (detail oriented, prompt and thorough) but I certainly don't mind that in an exam. It's hilarious that he has the same sock fetish as I do (but that's neither here or there). He's personable and easy to talk to as well as very accommodating when it comes to explaining things in layman terms. He did some baseline pictures of the back of my eyes as well as give me a thorough eye exam and compared it with my existing, old prescription. Wallah! Quite a significant change in vision since my last exam (oh...some 4-5 years ago). No wonder I couldn't see! Thanks to Dr. Sween, I can now change the font size on my cell phone to reflect my corrected vision. What a difference an updated and correct lens makes in vision! Dr. Sween's office takes insurance and will bill them for your as a courtesy. As a note, unlike many optometrist's offices, he does not carry frames and/or lenses for sale, instead you walk away with a prescription for lenses and/or contacts and you can either fulfill that prescription at the Coscto Optical/Vision counter (or your choice) where you can choose a new frame or have them replace the lenses on your existing frames.
