The Center is currently closed @ this time due to pandemic precautions. Normally, patrons could walk inside & speak face-to-face w/ preserve management. Instead, there's an outside kiosk that offers a pamphlet on the state forest. (I subtracted one star because it's difficult to know where the trail entryways are located off the main roads, & the pamphlet does not provide clear & concise info. I've learned through research that the Tucker Hill Day Use Area is a reliable entryway into this state park.) The Withlacoochee Forestry Center & an old water tower are on the adjacent property, along w/ many forestry vehicles. This large state forest covers three counties. It offers three types of trails: hiking (31 mi), biking (64 mi), & equestrian (43 mi). The Day Use Area fee is $2 per person. Annual passes may be purchased for $45 at this Visitor's Ctr, online, & at three other locations. There are 3 camping areas in the Citrus Co Tract, 6 camping areas in the Hernando/Croom Tract, & 2 non-electric camping areas in the Sumter/Croom Tract. Phone #877-879-3859 for reservations. Camping rates range from $10 to $25 nightly. (Pets are allowed at only Holder Mine, Silver Lake, & Cypress Glen Campgrounds.) "ATV & OHV traffic is restricted to the Croom Motorcycle Area (CMA)." This preserve is HUGE & very populated. Cyclists & horse back riders come to the preserve in large groups. Due to the trails not being well-marked, I don't plan to hike here alone.
