a meal in a take out box

Delicious fish dishes were delivered via UberEats from Ô Fish. We had a promotion; and we had a family gathering. Every member enjoyed their platter immensely. I took fish and chips. My fish has batter of Caribbean spices, with fries, chipotle sauce and coleslaw. Everything was good except the coleslaw which was disgusting; you know it was rotten. It slightly put the vibe down to enjoy my food. Hopefully, they will careful next time before sending something expired, and keep it fresh.

I was very surprised by this restaurant! I lived in the UK for 6 months and tried plenty of the "best fish and chips" and was always left disappointed. For me, it's really the texture of the battered and fried fish that doesn't appeal to me. O Fish is now my go-to place because of their panko breaded option. It is nice and crispy, not greasy at all and the tartar sauce and vinegar coleslaw is just amazing. Portion size is just perfect and you'll definitely be full with all the fries that come with it. The fake newspaper is also a cute touch. Excited to try the other options they have available!

My new favorite seafood restaurant in Montreal…read more.. we met up at 6pm on friday night, during happy hour. The happy hour specials are one dollar oysters and ten dollars for cocktails. It is very satisfying. One caveat though, the oysters tend to have shell bits in them so be careful. I ordered the risotto as my appetizer even though it was listed as a main. My main dish was octopus. The risotto was perfect, the rice was just right, mussels, tiger shrimps, calamari and lobster tail. it was well proportioned, you could have seafood in every bite until the last bit of rice, just perfect. The octopus, came with onions, capers and olives, not my favorite combo but I did enjoy the tanginess at the end, it did grow on me. Dessert was lava cake with ice cream. We asked to have it with ice cream and it was amazing. Already planning my return...

Always get excited when a new restaurant opens its doors but was very disappointed by this place…read more There's was nothing exciting about this place decor wise or even food wise. First when I had to reserve at this place they wanted credit card information which is fine because some restaurants do that nowadays but what I didn't like was that the cancelation should be done minimum 2 days in advance if not they charge you 25$ for each person, I find that ridiculous because last minute emergency do tend to happen sometimes. Second when we got there the hostess asked us if she could seat us at the bar saying that the bar is beautiful and all. The brings us to the bar section upstairs and seats us at a tiny little bar which seats 4 ppl(nothing amazing)... The 2 other ppl that were already seated at the bar had taken 1/3 of the space leaving us a very tight area to sit and we were not comfortable sitting there. We asked to be seated elsewhere, the place looked packed but there was a table available on the floor but they told us that the only other table they had for us was a table downstairs, we agreed because we didn't really mind where to seat as long as we had more space to breath. Also something that we didn't like was that the bartender asked us if we only speak English, so we weren't quite sure why he did that remark because he was able to converse with us. When we went downstairs we realized that our table was next to the open kitchen and also we were the only ppl from the restaurant that were seated there. Which we found really odd and felt like the outcast of the restaurant. We didn't want to complain to much because we always try to give the benefit of a doubt especially when it comes to new restos. I have this place a 3 star because of the drinks, they were very well made. I definitely recommend to get the east and ivy if you like lychee and also the guilt and ginger if you like ginger. For food we got the oysters, these were really good and opened by a girl just next to entrance by order. The oysters were fresh and I love the dill mignonette, which was different then other places. For mains we got the mussel and fries. Which was okay eatable, nothing amazing. We got the new York strip and asked for medium rare but the steak came medium. The pepper sauce was too thick to my liking. We also got a side of onion rings and mushrooms, the mushrooms were good, the batter of the onion rings were have any flavor and it was bland. The waitress was nice but not really attentive, like I said before we got seated alone downstairs and we were isolated from everyone so I'm guessing she wasn't really reminding herself to come check up on us more frequently I guess. The food was average nothing spectacular about the food here. Also we didn't really like the atmosphere. I don't know if we just went on a wrong day or this place is always like this. Overall it seems like this place is good for big groups and I also heard that this place is considered a superclub. The music we were hearing was mostly techno. I give them the benefit of doubt of they moving us to a bigger space and also the men that moved us I think it was the owner checked on us twice to see if we were okay which we appreciated. Personally I would not recommend this place nor I will go back. For the price the food is not worth it.

Unfortunately, the evening ended on a disappointing note. When it came time for them to pay, they tried to use several gift cards, and the manager came over and told them they could only use 4 of the 6 they had. It felt unnecessary and honestly hard to watch. Gift cards are money. Plain and simple. If someone has saved them for a special night, especially a family celebration, it should not become a stressful or embarrassing moment at the table. The food was great and the service was great, but the way this was handled left a bad taste in our mouth. Customer loyalty and goodwill are worth so much, and this felt like a missed opportunity to take care of people who clearly love supporting the restaurant.

Turns out the name is an homage to a Quebecois novel of the same name, about woking class people who live in st-henri, which is where the restaurant is located. We had pain au levain, it comes with butter and black garlic spread. The black garlic spread is amazing, so intense in flavor. Then we had Boudin, I love Boudin, might not be for everybody but it was good. Then we had the lamb chop on some sort of mash with reduction sauce, it was well balanced in flavor and textures. Then duck for two, reduction sauce and some roasted squash on the side which added a nice touch of sweetness. For dessert we had the mille feuille and the royal hazelnut cake, the hazelnut cake was my favorite, intense chocolatey and just sweet enough. Loved the name, loved the food.

Chicken Liver. I thought it was going to be cubes of fried chicken livers, but when I got here, it turned out to be chicken liver mousse, which was a bit fishy, like the chicken liver mousse I've had before, and it's good with a little strawberry sauce, so it's not too greasy, and covers up the fishy flavor of the chicken livers. Kale with spores. I've ordered this dish every time I've been to a white man's dinner, and I've had a lot of combinations, but this one is sweet and sour, and it's served with sautéed mushrooms, with a sauce underneath, and crunchy almonds, and it's got a lot of salt, sweetness, caramelization, crunchiness, and mushrooms, and it's got a lot of flavor. Baked potato. Baked potatoes with fish roe? At first I was skeptical that it was a dark dish, but it turned out to be really delicious The fish roe popped in my mouth with the slightly sweet and caramelized potatoes, and it really went well together I'm kind of in love with the flavor I can't help but feel that chef knows how to innovate! Risotto. The special of the day was something I didn't expect, the chef used barley in the risotto, and paired it with a hot spring egg, morel mushrooms, and white truffles, all good ingredients. The barley was creamy and rich, but a little light. Slow-cooked smoked beef. This is the classic slow-cooked smoked beef flavor soft and flavorful with black olives and creamy corn puree yummy classic! Overall, this is a restaurant I'll be coming back to for fresh ingredients, niche and innovative flavors, and I'm happy with my stomach and the value for money is great

The food presentation was excellent and a few substitutions were allowed, which we appreciated very much. Pizzas are great, but maybe a little thin in the middle, weighed down by so many toppings. Nice selection of wines, with something to please everyone. We went with an Aligoté at $60 / bottle. Service was very, very attentive... perhaps overly attentive, with 3 different people checking on us, breaking up the conversation and whisking plates away that weren't entirely finished. We had to ask the servers to stop refilling our wine glasses, gave us a feeling of being rushed. And I know this is a personal pet peeve of mine, but servers please, can we stop asking diners " are we still working on this? " This question really ticks me off and makes me feel like a horse at a trough. I'm not at work, I'm trying to enjoy the meal you prepared for me at my own pace. Lastly, one of us did not enjoy the calamari... wondered if it was frozen as it had a fishy, not-fresh taste. I will say the server appreciated the feedback and removed this from the bill.

I did find both Five Guys and Brit & Chips (they are on opposite sides of the street) on McGill Avenue south of St Jacques. I had eaten at a Brit & Chips location before when they had a restaurant near Guy-Concordia metro (maybe about ~10 years ago) when I worked in a building which was close to the Green line so convenient to go there for lunch since it was less than 10 minutes away from my place of work at the time whereas for me to get to this location from where I worked would have taken about twice as long since it would have meant transferring from the green line to the orange line. On the day that I went to that location back then, I did remember that it wasn't that busy and I was the only customer. Unfortunately, that Brit & Chips restaurant did not survive. I did remember that the fish was very good so decided to go to this Brit & Chips since they had a lunch special. The staff were very friendly and greeted me in French and while I'm bilingual, I answered in English and the server replied to me in English. I was asked whether I was eating in or wanted something take out. I told the person that I was eating in and he told me that I could sit "anywhere" so I picked a seat in the back. I went to the washroom to wash my hands and then returned to my seat. I was asked whether I was ready to order and I mentioned that I was so the person motioned to the server and she asked me what I wanted. I asked her what I could get for their $19 lunch special and she told me that it was any of the 3 fish and chips dishes on the menu. I quickly looked at it and made my choice based on the server's recommendation (cod) and also decided to have a beer. The beer was brought immediately to my table and the food was put on my table a few minutes later (maybe 4 minutes later). The battered fish wasn't as good or prepared as well as I remember from the other location nor was it the best battered fish that I've had. The fries (chips) were good. The dipping sauce was also very good. What I didn't like about the way my battered fish was prepared was that when I cut into it, the hollow or "air pockets" of the fish/batter was dripping with oil. I know that the battered fish is deep fried so some oil is to be expected but I felt that it was "a lot" of oil that came out when I cut into my fish. The restaurant wasn't too busy at the time that I went (it wasn't empty nor was I the only customer there throughout my meal since as people left, others came in). I also didn't feel rushed. I showed up about 15 minutes before 2pm (their lunch special ends at 2pm... which I interpret to mean that the customer needs to enter and order before 2pm). In terms of whether I would return, I'm unsure since I'm rarely if ever at Square Victoria and for the orange line in downtown Montreal, I'm generally either at Place D'Armes or Bonaventure. If I exit Square Victoria metro, I would have no aversion to returning if I felt like fish & chips but would also just be as likely to try a different restaurant in the area. When downtown, I'm generally around the green line area. Yes, I know that in the underground city/tunnels you can get from McGill metro to Square Victoria metro without taking the metro but it is a very long walk indoors (from McGill metro station to Eaton Centre to the tunnel to Place Ville Maria to Central Station to the tunnel at Bonaventure station and a long walk indoors, one winds up in Square Victoria metro and exiting Square Victoria metro and going outside, walking a few blocks, less than 5 minutes or so away is Brit & Chips. Depending on the weather, if one didn't want to take the metro but was at McGill metro, it might be faster to just walk there directly above ground (outdoors) but then again with the traffic lights, it might not save that much time but would save a lot of walking (and perhaps going up a few flights of stairs since some escalators generally don't work). I would rate this place as 3.5 stars which I've rounded up to a 4 since I don't feel right lowering it to a 3.

The clientele is a cross section of the general population of Montreal. Young and old, families and couples. They have waiter service. The fish part of the "fish and chips"was not greasy or soggy. Which can often be the case if the oil is not hot enough. They have their own signature tartar sauce that comes with the meal. There are plenty of chips that come with the fish that are well seasoned and cooked to order. I didn't see any sitting in a stainless steel bin waiting to be delivered to the customer. The kitchen is partially open so you can see in and see what they're doing if that's your preference or if you're curious. As we were leaving, the cook was at one of the counters, eating his own food. That's a good sign!
