Stayed here three days with my husband and infant child. Check-in was really quick and easy. My overall opinion of the room was a three out of five. Mainly because of there was no AC. If we had known this upon booking we wouldn't have chose this location. They only had a very small fan on the night stand. For there to be no AC I think maybe they should invest in better fans? The kitchen and fridge downstairs was really helpful because we had to make bottles. The nosies outside didn't bother us. (If you don't like loud outside noises this isn't the place for you) for being downtown for this price it's great. Horrible experience. There was only one bathroom in the hall and, of course, my room was at the end of the hall. Half the time there was someone taking a shower when I needed it. I left my diamond necklace in the bathroom with the shower (on accident) while trying to lug all my stuff back to the room. Never saw it again. There was some guy in the room above me that constantly paced around his room at ALL TIMES. 4am? He was pacing. This is not an exaggeration. Pretty sure he was on drugs. I guess for sanitary reasons they left the plastic on the beds. Every time my boyfriend moved I woke up because it was SO loud. As someone else said, "you get what you paid for". And I paid $48 for a room with a CLEAN bathroom, HOT water, CLEAN room, comfortable bed. Was it fabulous, no. But I wasn't looking for fabulous, it's a good clean hostel, well worth the amount. One staff member was a little "tart", but all the others were really helpful and courteous. If you want fabulous, there is a Four Seasons in town. I personally spent my money on lots of beer and food instead during the GABF. I'll be back here when I am in Denver. First the good: location is great, especially if you plan to visit the art museum or colorado history museum. I was easily within walking distance of food, beverage, and recreation. Price is fair. Parking was easy-$ 5 per entry in the recommended lot. Friendly staff. The meh: there is definitely a lot of character, and characters, here. I could describe it as rustic or old, homey or noisy, sleepy or shabby, and they'd all be accurate. This is a place to sleep and keep your stuff. The bad: the room temp is controlled by a window. If it's cold outside, you're going to melt or freeze. I felt icky walking barefoot in the shower, bring shower sandals. The water tastes like iron, and the beds are covered in plastic. Hey, this place is alright! I stayed for 3 nights at the 11th Ave. Hotel and I would do so again. Although a little rough around the edges, for ~60 bucks a night, it's a hell of a deal. I stayed in the private rooms on the hotel side of the operation, with my own bathroom and plenty of room. Things were clean, and I was expecting the worst. I was attending the Great American Beer Festival down the road, and I rented one of the Denver B-Cycle bikes from a station next to Arby's (catty corner from the hotel). Those things are money, and I was able to jam all over Denver by bike and then drop it off right by the hotel. (http://denver.bcycle.com/ - can't recommend this enough) Also, Stoney's Bar & Grill around the corner is a great spot for a draft and a meal. Added value. If you're scared of ghetto people from the local clubs (they're loud but harmless) around the area, or are afraid to take a quick bath in lieu of shower (only a bathtub in my room) - then stay away. However, if you're a well-rounded human looking to save a few bucks, this place is awesome. 11th Ave Hotel combined with the rental bikes and Denver is your oyster for pennies on the dollar. Not bad. Good for the price. Stayed about 4 days here and was overall happy. We had some issues with making our reservation (tried online, by phone, in person, by phone again, and finally finished up in person), but it all worked out. Road noise got a little loud and no curtains so bring ear plugs and eye mask. Clean. Variety of room types. Safe. Good location - an easy walk to the heart of Denver. NOTE - towels are $3 so just bring your own (I always do, makes life easier). Laundry is $1.25 wash, $.75 dry. If you have a car and don't plan on moving it much then use the car lot across the street ($5) each time you enter. If you plan on using your car then park in the residential parking overnight. Look for the signs that say 2hr parking 8am-6pm. Then as long as you move your car before 10am you are good to go. Finding a spot can be a challenge, but worth it in my opinion. The staff was not too helpful when we tried to get a refund for one night. I think there was a meth lab on one of the floors and the staff didn't seem too upset about it. Always seemed to be homeless people in the lobby or the sidewalk in front of the building, but they were nice and not threatening. I think the staff were friends with them or maybe they were the staff... not sure. This was my first hotel in American, and I have to say, my last. I think trying to save some money by staying here made me realize the little extra for a hotel that is reputable and nice is well worth it. read more

A hostel only in name. This place has many rooms, which is not a good thing when you call yourself a hostel and all you have is one small fridge, a microwave, a small griddle, a double sink, and a handful of dishes and silverware hanging out in a drying dish. I mean, we chose hostels to save our own money by cooking our own food. Don't expect to do that here. It's a non smoking establishment, which would be great, except they have the smoking area right out back where 1/4 of the rooms end up filling up with cigarette smoke. "Close the window," you say. Well, we would have, except there is no air system in the rooms. In fact, your air system is a fan to blow the cool air in, and in the case of the back rooms, draw in cigarette smoke and ash... yes, ash. It made it's way all the way up into my water glass. The beautiful twinkly lights also left our room nice and bright all night, since our blinds only went half way down the window... really guys!? The place looks clean enough. There was soap residue on the sink, not to cleaned very well. And I did see a cockroach scurry under the bathroom door where the tile meets the carpet. I put down some eucalyptus oil on the tile and he didn't come back. And showers were another issue. Your shower temperature is determined by how many people are flushing toilets or running water. It's a nice yo-yo or scalding hot, to icy cold in seconds, going back and forth for the whole duration of your shower. I will give it this, it is located in the heart of Denver, so everything is close. read more

Who doesn't love a clean pillow to rest your head at night? this place has that! and at an extremely affordable price. First off let me say this its a Hostel people. its gonna be janky and its gonna come across as old maybe even dirty but at this place I wasn't welcomed in with the terrible stench of backpacker, there was no homless outside begging and the beds are actually very comfortable. I've stayed at a number of Hostels around the world and this Hostel is one I would go back to time and time again. I had the options of staying in a private room with private bath, Private room with shared bath, a Multi room ?, and of course the Dorm Room which is the most common flavor in hostels. you stay in a room with 3-5 other girls or guys, you get a bunk, and a locker. The room even had its own attached bath with a shower. the windows opened wide to allow a wonderful cross breeze, and there was even a mini fridge, microwave (downstairs), and a tv in the room! I always travel with a lock to avoid the fees of using their locks or lockers, but if you want to take a shower make sure you get a towel, its a refundable fee and an actually soft towel. This hostel is located just blocks from the 16th street mall, art installments, beautiful parks, museums and delicious food is just out the from door. All with in a short walking distance. the 16th street mall is a great place to spend the day, and I do highly recommend straying from the beaten path, you will stumble upon hidden treasures. I will stay at this Hostel every time I come to Denver from now on. For 20 bucks a night, a clean bed, and knowing my travels are safe from any sticky fingers that happen to be around, it is totally worth it. Repeat after me: "you get what you pay for". Once you accept this maxim, all will be well. That, and if you get a private room with a bath - make sure it has a shower head. WTF am I supposed to do with a bath tub, anyways? The tub did not have hot water either (kind of brutal for winter/spring). Switching to a room with a proper shower head helped immensely. Once I got the bath tub sorted out, I was a happy camper. The bed was more than adequate for laying my weary head and there are far worse places to sleep. It is in a convenient location, but there is an underage club on the same block. Beware of teenagers when you cross the street. Otherwise, I had no problems catching a cab after parking my car. First of all, after reading all of the reviews I was terrified to have booked this place. I was truly expecting the worst and made secondary arrangements just in case.... With that being said, my stay was surprisingly wonderful. The room was clean and spacious. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was spotless and so cute. The outside of the building is under construction so it looks scary to come in, but the lobby was small and welcoming, featuring photos of the 116 year old building in its prime. The front desk staff was kind and offered us towels at check in. I read one review that towels were an extra cost? Perhaps it was because of the type of room they booked, but ours were included in our stay with soap and shampoo. Overall, we had a really nice experience! Now, some things that are true in some of the awful reviews: The 116 year old building does not have air conditioning. When we arrived it was 95 degrees. We had a small fan to put in the window and when we got back later in the evening, once the sun went down, the room was a comfortable temperature all night. If you come in the summer, set your expectations accordingly. The hotel is right next to a night club. We stayed on a Friday so there was loud, room shaking bass playing until bar close at 2am. If you are looking to stay out late and come back late this place is perfect for you! If you want a peaceful weekend of uninterrupted sleep, maybe look for different lodging. After staying at the AAE for a second time I noticed on my credit card statement that there was a charge from AAE Hotels for almost $10 but also a charge from 11th Ave Hotel for the nightly room rate (about $65). Every time I've tried to call the 800 number for AAE I eventually get a recorded message that they are assisting other customers and I need to call back. Granted $10 isn't a lot - but why was it charged to my card? Why by AAE hotels and why was room charge listed as 11TH Ave Hotel? I would recommend you check your credit card statement if you are paying with a credit card. read more

This hostel is a nightmare! While the location and price might seem like enough to offset the negatives, they are NOT! First, the staff is incredibly rude. Multiple times, we were harassed by the staff and treated like criminals. The manager accused my friend and I of not being registered guests and threatened to call the police for trespassing. This was absolutely false. Further, considering the other tenants and guests at the Hostel, we should have been the least of their worries. The majority of guests here are aging, drug users. Also, my friend and I paid for a private bathroom, only to discover it had a clawfoot tub instead of a shower. The tub had no curtain or shower attachment. There was ZERO chance we were going to have a "relaxing soak" in a grimy hostel tub. We ended up using the shared showers in the hall. Other complaints: lack of functioning outlets in room no fitted sheets on bed extremely loud event venue located next door our room was not ready when we arrived. I have stayed in many hostels in the United States and abroad. This was absolutely the worst experience I have ever had. Do yourself a favor and go anywhere else. read more

This place was an absolute dump! The carpet needs to be taken up and repaired. It's stained and damp looking. The communal shower area was nasty and people should be ashamed of themselves for leaving their empty and dirty shower products thrown everywhere. What is the problem with people flushing the toilet?! Everything was so bad that I will leave without taking a shower. It was gross. I also experience some pretty bad allergy related symptoms. I became stuffy each time I walked into the hotel. I'm not sure if it was from the carpets or from the environment not being cleanly. The staff at check-in was not helpful or informative when it came to parking (many of the parking lots do not allow you to park after hours). The door on my room (private room) does not close properly, which is not safe. I also don't understand why we were charged $5 for a room key. I know this place is cheap and rated a $ but what did/does my money pay if not a key for with this stay?! You could probably get better accommodations at a Motel 8. I would never advise anyone to stay here. Be warned, the only thing that's great about this place is its location. What a horrible experience! read more

I had a late checkout which I knew I would have to pay for as an extended stay, but the person at the front desk when I was leaving told me I did not have to pay for it only until I found out that it had been charged on the credit card that I used to make the reservation, which I was never informed about until I saw my statement. After calling the hotel more than 5 times expecting to have the issue addressed but never having a response, the manager Jeff, finally talked to me after I CALLED AGAIN, saying that it had been correctly charged since it had been a late check out. Meaning that either the employees are badly informed about their duties or they simply do whatever they want, so I have a charge on my international credit card made without my permission making me pay extras fees JUST BECAUSE the manager does one thing and the employees whatever they want. I would have gladly paid the extra night WITH CASH if I had been informed that I had to. Not staying there again!!! read more

Solid hostel. Beds for $20-30, $3 towel deposit. The showers and rooms are clean, but nothing special. Great location for the price, though - it's about a 10 minute walk from downtown, but there is also a b-cycle (shared bikes) station across the street, which puts the whole city at your fingertips. Also a shared kitchen with a large fridge and cooking necessities. Overall, great hostel if you're looking for a good home-base to sleep and cook, but don't expect a hostel social scene. read more

I had an absolutely fantastic experience here. Affordable rates and a great location. When we arrived they saw that my friend and I had signed up for a room that just had one bed and immediately offered to set us up in a room with a bunk bed for the same rate. The room was great - this is obviously an old building, but the staff has done a great job keeping it clean and presentable. This place should really take hotel out of its name. It's a hostel and they don't offer guests that book hotel rooms here many of the amenities you would expect a hotel to offer. They charge for room keys and bath towels, and I assume that means you get one towel only and not a set of towels. The mattress was incredibly hard and uncomfortable and is not suitable for anything more than a dorm room. There was no hot water. Not that it mattered since I didn't have a towel and the bathrooms don't have showers. I checked in late and when I arrived I heard the guy at the desk tell the young girl checking in in front of me that "if she was doing it correctly, it would work." Rather than trying to help her fix whatever issue she had. Then when it was my turn he turned to talked to his coworker several times leaving me standing there while they had a conversation about everyone "f*@king babysitting him" about clocking in and out. This is when I find out that if I want a towel then I would have to pay for it, so I told him that I needed a towel. After I settled my bill I asked what I needed to do to get a towel and he told me that I was "f*@king mumbling dude and I thought you said you didn't want one." So here I am writing a negative review instead of taking a shower. read more

This is my first hostel experience and I must say, it was very pleasant. I thought I would have an issue with the shower and bathroom not being in the same room. This place is a middle of the road aweful. Had a devil of a time trying to make a reservation for this hotel. Unlike a REAL hotel they do not have an on-line reservation system. You have to leave a message on their low-brow web site and hope that someone gets back to you. When that didn't work (4 days later heard nothing back from anybody) I called the hotel. The nice gentleman I spoke with told me he could get me all setup with a reservation. But when I arrived the reservation was missing at first but they sure found it when they tracked it using my credit card number. If you don't cancel your reservation within 48 hrs of arrival they will charge you for one night of stay. The rooms appeared to be somewhat clean UNTIL you take a black light to the room. The building needs AC because it is so cavernous that the heat is trapped. The heat trapped in the bowls of the building made for a hot nights sleep. I kept waking up with sweat rolling down my face and soaked pillows all night long, so bring a fan if you want to have a cool room. You can actually pick up a fan from the good will store down the street. The front desk lady was very unhumanly rude. My friend and I had just arrived from the west coast (where my friend lives in Eugene, OR). Along the way to Denver, my friend had his wallet stolen so by the time we got to the hotel he didn't have an ID anymore. This hotel wouldn't let my friend check in without ID. When we inquired as to what we could do the rude front desk lady said that my friend should not have 'let his wallet gotten stolen' and recommended that he stay at the local homeless shelter. She claimed that there was nothing she could do. There was most definitely something she COULD have done as no one had a gun pointed to her head. She could have had some human compassion. And she got all agitated that she had to recalculate the price of the room for just one (1) person after sending my friend to a homeless shelter. She acted like she was doing me some BIG favor by just doing her job. She talked about how this was a 'private' hotel and got all bent out of shape when I pointed out that ALL hotels are private hotel, none are government run. The rude front desk lady suggested that I cancel my stay there even though she knew very well that I would be charged for a nights stay since I hadn't canceled my reservation within 48 hrs. The mattress was enclosed in plastic with dead bed bugs showing through the clear plastic. The in-room sink barely worked. At least the shared bathrooms seemed to be somewhat clean, but I didn't put it to a black light test because I was too scared of what I might have found. The hallway carpets are all stained and I felt a bit like an incarcerated inmate with all the cameras watching my every move. And the TV wouldn't go to all the channels listed on the TV list sheet. If I hadn't had my smart tablet with the ability to act as a remote control for the TV I wouldn't been able to view the only good channels offered. Who wants to watch just PBS & Fox News all night long. The WIFI is EXTREMELY slow and sucks. On top of that they filtered where I could go essentially making it useless. And it can be very noisy. They put me in a room where if I opened the window the sound of the swamp cooler (which didn't service our part of the hotel) would keep you up all night long. There was no fridge anywhere, not even a mini-fridge. The dresser drawers were filthy and a thick layer of dust covered the lamps and tops of the furniture. The redeeming qualities about the hotel is that it has european charm. The hotel's location makes it ideal. It is EXTREMELY close to the heart of downtown. And the price is HALF of what you'd pay if you were staying at a REAL hotel. You do get what you pay for and since you aren't paying very much don't expect to get very much. Bring your own towels otherwise you'll be paying $3 for that. $5 deposit for the room key. Overall this place is not as bad as some places I've stayed while traveling in Europe, which I would have expected. Very bad experience, TO BE AVOIDED. In short: not clean, disrespectful manager, noisy area, no atmosphere In details: When I arrived the guy at the reception desk told me that there was no parking. I was confused because it was written on hostelsworld.com (same on Hostels.com) and that's why I booked this hostel... He said it was not a right information... So I asked if they would pay for my public parking... They said no. Then he said... In fact we have a parking but you have to leave before 6:30am... Yeah right! Then he called the manager, he checked on the web site and confirmed it was written that they had parking... He said he couldn't control that information... Yeah right!!! Who can???? I asked what he would do about it... He answered he would ask to correct the information... I told him it was not fair for me... As the checking was taking forever... He came back 5min later and said he would give me a parking spot... I thank him a lot and appreciated the gesture... Then I understood it was 2 cars in a lane, and if I would park first, nobody can guarantee that I will be able to go out if another car is park behind me... Not great but... Ok... At least he tried... The best, is when he came back and said with condescending tone: "it is also written on the website that there is a restaurant here, so what, am I supposed to pay for your diner now??!!" I stayed calmed... But really??? Are you talking like that to a polite customer when you give wrong information? Then...(no it's not all)... The room was not ready at 12pm (I booked for 12pm but I did not complain) we came back at 2pm... The room had no AC and it was about 100degrees outside, but no fan neither and the windows in a noisy area... It was a room with private bathroom... (Described as full bath on the website) it was only a bathtub with no shower head!!! I don't know... I had never seen that... Does it still exist? I thought... At least it's clean... Until I opened the sit of toilets... It wasn't clean... We decided to leave the hotel... It was another guy at the reception... He was sorry and asked me to write what went wrong and to call the manager on Monday... The manager who was laughing at me a few hours earlier... I am not going to call him... I went to loads of hostels in many countries around the world... This is the worst one... On top of that, as many reviews say, no atmosphere... This is more like a (very bad) hotel... VERY TOXIC AND UNWELCOME ENVIRONMENT. IF YOU CAN CHOOSE TO GO ELSEWHERE, DO SO!! If it were possible to give this place less than one star, I would. I have been staying here for almost 2 months out of necessity. So, I feel that my opinion is pretty valid and important considering how long I have been staying here. First of all, the owner Jim and his lapdog Frank are disrespectful. They do not treat the residents downstairs like human beings. I have previously been homeless myself. The residents in the beds downstairs, from my understanding, are homeless. I do not appreciate the fact that they are treated like sub-human. It is completely unprofessional and awful. Also, they don't even let someone warm up in the doorway if they are stuck out in the cold. They have no sympathy or respect for people of a lower economic class. I have heard their attitude and actions described as "prison-like". Also, I would highly recommend against this place if you are queer (especially if you are very open and/or obvious about being queer/LGBTQ). Frank will make snide comments about that, if not to your face, behind your back. (I am very close to an employee that works here, so I know about some of the things that go on that some people do not know.) Just for reference, Frank is the middle age guy that is almost always working at the front desk. He is usually pissy and grumpy about something, and doesn't seem to know how to hide that while he is working. I have smiled at him as I walked in the door, and he just looked back at me with a sour expression on his face. He also gets this messed up satisfaction from kicking people out. He sits back there and watches the surveillance all the time. From my perspective, he is immature, disrespectful, rude, controlling, and very very off-putting. There is also a housekeeper who is not very friendly. Oh, I can't forget to mention this: BEDBUGS. And the housekeeper I mentioned above made a big fuss about us switching rooms until they took care of the bedbug problem. Their website makes them seem like a pretty nice little hotel. NO. They are pretentious. The owner wants to get Hilton/Sheraton-quality guests in here, but that is really never going to happen. He needs to aim for a more middle-of-the-road customer base. If he continues being so picky about who is able to stay here, and treating people of lower economic class like shit, this place is going to crumble underneath him. They already have a "work order" sign on the corner of their window outside for not finishing drywall and things like that. Oh, also: The internet is NOT good. (I'm an experienced traveler. I also have worked as a hotel maid before.) I came here to escape a botched "friend" situation, was not expecting to "vacation" so I was a little bit desperate. I took a private room with a shared bath since the hostel rooms were not available, (I would have liked to have use of a kitchen). The carpet BADLY needs a shampooing, the plants want some water, a little decoration in the room might not hurt, and the windows had to be propped open. I was given the street corner room. At night it was extremely noisy. I liked the staff, they gave good recommendations for things to eat and do locally. I have paid the same price for places I would give 5 stars to, though. I slept ok. Jim and Frank clearly don't know how to run a business. This place is unsafe. I was in a room when someone attempted to open the door at about 12 am. It is now 2.00 am and I am standing in the lobby waiting on Frank to show up because according to the hotel attendant they don't have access to the cameras. I was sleeping and a male had a key to the room and walked right in. Do not stay at a hotel that's dirty has poor management but also a place where you're at risk. Do not stay at a place where if you leave your room your stuff is unsafe do to poor management. According to the attendant he has no idea how that person has a key. Unbelievable that someone would walk right into your room right !? I mean at first it was weird and I thought someone might have been drunk and accidentally tried opening the door. Unfortunately I am unaware if this person who opened my door walked in while I was asleep is in the right state of mind or not. The worst thing is that I'm still in the lobby and it's been past 20 minutes and I still haven't gotten my issue resolved. read more

This hotel was awful! I have never been so disrespected!! I had never been to a hostel before but I'd seen images online of hostels so I didn't have too high expectations. I was a walk-in at 2 am and just needed a bed and a shower so I was prepared for whatever as long as there weren't bed bugs. I was given a room that had no sheets or blankets or even a pillow case. The floor was filthy and dust every where. Walls were damaged and destroyed. I just thought that that would be what I had to deal with. I tried to take it lightly. I needed a shower and thought that might help me sleep so I went to their public shower and fought with it long enough to get it warm because the nozzle is broken. After my "warm" shower I went back to my room confused as to why I didn't have any bedding. I then noticed debris and sharp twisted wire on the mattress. I was fed up and took my stuff and asked to check out. The service said that they value their customers so I could expect a refund. I stated that i wanted to be fair as I had taken a shower and said that I would be happy with a refund minus the visitors fee ($20). I was told that I would have to wait to meet management (mike) in the morning. It was 3 am and I "slept" in my car for the rest of the night. I then walked in again at 6 am to discuss the situation and waited patiently until 830 for mike to arrive. The other desk help immediately agreed that my room was unacceptable upon hearing the description and seeing the room for themselves and they were upset with the housekeeping. Turns out the room was supposed to be closed out for maintenance and never should have been rented in the first place. Mike never once looked me in the eye as he angrily gave me my full refund and told me to never come back and that they don't want me there because what I had done was "ask for a shower." I protested as I had driven 13 hours that day and needed a god damn nights sleep before driving another 8 today! I don't know if I can even do it now because I didn't sleep! They said get out and don't come back well they won't be seeing me ever again. Greed and Ego run this hostel. read more

Got a single private room. Paid around 80. Topmost floor. For the price and location, it is ok. You gotta pay for towels, so bring your own. The front desk had no problems. That have security cameras everywhere. They also scan your ID and save your credit card information. So if you're paranoid about identity theft, look elsewhere. I didn't shower there because the place was dirty. They claim that they clean the bathrooms twice a day, but looks like they clean it twice a millennium. Bring sandals, or get your feet exposed to some nasty chit. Folks here are friendly, chitty chatty and chilly chally. For 80, you can find a better hotel, but nothing really beats this location. It's affordable, and much better than throwing out 200 bucks for few luxuries. read more

11th Avenue Hostel is still establishing itself as a travellers hostel, and seems to be in an awkward in-between phase. Mostly inhabited by semi-permanent "guests" being noticeably high on more than just the stellar recreational marijuana available in Denver. The staff were pretty friendly, cooking facilities are minimal, but is the cheapest option for travellers looking for dorms. Cute building and in a great location for visiting museums and eating great food. read more
