I feel I would be doing the public a disservice if I left another 4+ rating for this school, so…read morehere is my honest feedback about LEP. To preface, my oldest child attended from March 2020-August 2023 and my younger child from August 2023-August 2024. A lot changed over these four years, and all of the concerns below were raised directly with Lily (the director). Pros: * Friendly, caring teachers * Native Mandarin-speaking teachers who led daily Chinese circle time (~30 minutes of songs) * My children learned new songs and motor skills during their time there Cons: * Poor communication: Aside from a once-a-month newsletter, parents received little direct communication. Most updates came from the parent group chat. I suggested hiring an admin, but this was not addressed. * Leadership issues: Lily struggles with management and operations. At times, she appeared overwhelmed and allowed parents to take the lead. I also personally witnessed her berating a teacher over a minor mistake. * High teacher turnover: Most teachers leave within 1-2 years. While common in early education, the constant turnover was disruptive. * Lack of transparency: Parents are given little to no information about teachers' educational backgrounds. When we first joined, a teacher with expertise in child behavior was invaluable, but she left. * Potty training mishandling: When my younger daughter was potty training, the staff often let her soil her pants rather than guiding her to the toilet. Lily frequently insisted that we put her back into diapers and claimed she was not developmentally ready, yet that same day she successfully pooped in the toilet at home. After we informed Lily of our plan to unenroll, it felt like staff stopped supporting her potty training progress and, more concerningly, that Lily stopped caring about our child's development because we were no longer going to be financially supporting her business. * Cleanliness and hygiene: Soap dispensers were frequently empty or diluted (I documented this with photos/videos). When I brought this up to Lily, she claims that it is foaming soap. I use foaming soap at home and know that is not it. While this improved in our final weeks, the issue persisted for a long time. My younger daughter was sick every couple of weeks and contracted HFMD twice within months. I believe this was due to poor hygiene practices, though Lily denied the school's role. After she transitioned to her new school, she stopped getting sick every two weeks and thrived in her potty training journey, which confirmed for us that the issues were specific to LEP. Some time has passed since my children attended, so I truly hope conditions have improved for the sake of the teachers, children, and families.

One thing I really appreciate is their Montessori teaching approach. Instead of just traditional instruction, the children are encouraged to explore, discover, and learn at their own pace. I love seeing my daughter become more curious and independent through hands-on learning and exploration. The bilingual environment is also wonderful, and the teachers communicate well with parents. My daughter enjoys going to school every day, and we're grateful to have found such a positive learning environment.

I am so glad we found Olive when we were looking for a new school for our kids. Olive is now our…read moresecond home because: * It is an one-stop education hub: Olive provides a variety of programs. Our girl is a kinder, so she attends to its after-school program (which is also available to 1st and 2nd graders). Our boy is now in Olive's preschool. Therefore, we can drop off and pick up both of our kids at the same time. * The teacher and student ratio is ideal: In my son's preschool, one teachers takes care of 4 to 6 children. Our boy was so excited during the first two weeks because he never thought he could learn so many new stuff with so much attention from the teachers every day. * Olive's teachers are very caring and professional. They foster and care for their students like their own children. Both of our kids transited to Olive relatively easily because the teachers care for them just like their moms. * The academic curriculum is excellent and exciting: I am confident my kids are going to learn so much at Olive every day because the founder and the teachers carefully design the school's STEM program. More importantly, kids are excited, not forced, to learn new stuff. When I pick up my children, they would run to me because they could not wait to show the work they did at Olive. I bought many binders earlier this month in order to help my kids organize their school work. * Transportation assistance: I was so worried about what to do when my kinder's public school schedule, which starts from 11 AM to 3 PM. Olive's transportation assistance resolved my concern! Now I could just drop my kinder with her brother in the morning because the teachers would drive my kinder to the public school at 11 AM and then pick her up later. * Linguistic programs: Olive offers courses to teach children different languages. It is exciting to see our children teach me Chinese and Hindu they learn at Olive! * Affordable tuition: Compared to other school's fee, Olive's is very reasonable and affordable. Many other private schools charge the parents extra fee and yet fail to deliver the same effects as Olive does. Overall, Olive is a great place for the parents to send their children, especially ones who haven't attended any school until the kindergarten. The teachers are so loving and caring, so the children could easily transit into Olive's environment and start learning exciting stuff very shortly!

My son spent 9 years at this daycare -- it was supposed to be his safe place, his second home. But…read moreinstead, he was repeatedly called the N-word by other children, and painfully, the daughter of a teacher who works there also called him a racial slur. No child should have to endure that -- especially not in a place meant to protect them. When my son found the courage to speak up, hoping for support and safety, he was instead quietly pushed out. No goodbyes. Just excuses. This was supposed to be his last summer before middle school -- a milestone he looked forward to with so much excitement. He was especially looking forward to seeing some of his friends who come to the daycare only in the summer but don't go to his school. Now, all he's left with is heartbreak and confusion. He wonders why the children who hurt him remain welcomed with open arms, while he was the one punished for simply standing up for himself. That message -- that speaking out leads to being cast aside -- is crushing, and no child should ever feel that way. What hurts even more is knowing that one of the children who called him a slur is the daughter of a teacher who works there. It makes me question what kind of environment truly exists within these walls. My son deserved so much better. Every child deserves to be safe, seen, and protected. **************Edit/Response to Owner's Reply:*********************** Thank you for your response, but I feel it's important to clarify and respond to several things you said. Yes, the incident with the staff member's daughter happened over text--but she is the daughter of a teacher who still works at your daycare. That matters. Children often pick up language and attitudes from their home environment. The fact that this child felt comfortable using a racial slur says a lot about what may be normalized around her--and that should raise serious concerns about the values being modeled by your staff. You referred to it as a "disagreement" that took place "outside of school," but calling someone a racial slur is not a disagreement. It's racism. And this wasn't an isolated case. My son was called racial slurs by at least five different children during his time at your daycare. Each time, the response was minimal--typically just a forced apology, and once, a classroom reassignment. No real consequences. No restorative practices. No signs that the deeper issue was taken seriously. The most alarming part is that the last time my son was called a slur, we weren't even notified. We only found out because I went through his tablet where he was talking about it with a friend. When my husband emailed you directly asking how our son would be protected going forward--because he still wanted to attend summer camp and be with his friends--you never responsed. Then suddenly we were told he couldn't attend, even though he'd attended for nearly a decade and we'd never once had issues with timing or enrollment in past years. Let's be honest: this wasn't about a missed deadline. It was about avoiding discomfort. It was easier to remove our son than to address what was happening to him. He wasn't given a proper goodbye. He wasn't offered support. He was quietly pushed out. Sunshine was supposed to be a safe place. Instead, it became the place that showed him that when you speak up about racism, you might be the one who gets excluded. He deserved better. Every child does.

Sunshine is family owned; the owners Ms Kelly and Ms Nathan have young kids so they understand the challenges parents and kids face. They are open minded, friendly, supportive, and honest. As a working parent with 3 young kids, I need a child care place where I trust. I also need convenience where they can pickup kids from school to afterschool care so parents don't need to take time off during midday. I also need flexibility where they can drop off and pickup kids to other extracurricular activities within the plaza such as Kumon, Cal color, Ping Pong, and Music/Piano. Sunshine meets all my expectations. Sunshine really distinguishes itself with their flexibility! When my sons had afterschool activities at Warm Springs or Leitch Elementary such as basketball practice and games, math contest, or chess class; Mr Jeffrey the transportation manager did not hesitate and made extra trip to pick them up. In addition, when my son needed to attend other extra curriculum class 5 mins drive away from Sunshine, Sunshine didn't hesitate to help. I had never thought an affordable afterschool care place can accommodate these additional service!!! Sunshine is very reliable and really makes things easier for working parents. Not everything was perfect. When my kids started preschool at Sunshine, all of them had a rocky start. All felt sick during first week. It was heartbreaking for me. In hindsight, all toddlers go through this journey of catching germs and building up their immunity when interacting with other children. After few months, they were fine. Talking to other parents, this is a challenge for all young kids going to any preschool the first time. I've been with Sunshine since 2015; they are like my second family entrusted in taking great care of my 3 kids when I'm at work. Thank you Ms Kelly, Mr Nathan, and Mr Jeffrey!

I have so many wonderful things to say about the school and staff, but I don't have enough time to write an entire essay! Overall, everyone has been incredibly kind, supportive, and caring throughout my daughter's milestones and development. From her teachers and teacher assistants (there have been many over the years, so it would be difficult to list them all) to the front desk staff Ms. Cassandra, Ms. Cindy, and Ms. Chitra, everyone has always been helpful, accommodating, and attentive to my daughter's needs and communication. The facility is clean, organized, and always feels safe. It was a brand-new school when we first enrolled, and they have continued to maintain the property and improve their operations over time. There is also plenty of parking, which makes drop-off and pick-up very convenient for parents. One thing I truly appreciate is how the school continuously strives to improve and enhance safety for the children. Over the years, they have implemented several positive changes, such as installing doorbell alerts when classroom doors are opened, tracking and documenting classroom attendance to ensure every child is accounted for, and upgrading their communication system. Parents can now easily view photos and receive updates about their child's daily activities and progress through the app. Most importantly, I have seen tremendous growth in my daughter since attending Learn & Play. The curriculum is easy for parents to follow and has played a significant role in her learning and development. Overall, I highly recommend Milpitas Learn & Play. The staff is amazing, the school is well-organized, and my daughter has had a wonderful experience there.
