Laptop, wine, water, and ice cream is just out of view. Don't judge me!

Had a long day with too much business travel and grumble grumble. Sat down at a comfy table and Aster took amazing care of me. Glass of wine, tasty snacks, space for my computer. Super comfortable place to unwind a bit before ending a long day.

15 & Eads is conveniently located near me so we thought to get up and enjoy breakfast there this morning only to be disappointed. We always do the "all you can eat buffet" which use to be great when we started going here last October once moving to area. The price then for the "all you can eat buffet" was $19 per person ....months later moved up to $21 and now $24. Definitely wouldn't complain about the $24 if it was worth $24. Seems as the price moved up, they started changing the items and removing items for the buffet but asking for more money. This morning as we were getting our plates, most items were cold, my waffle was too hard that I couldn't even cut with my knife. I had grabbed a yogurt but didn't open with my breakfast so I brought home with me only to see it's out of date. Today is the 20th and it has the 14th on it. So clearly not worth $24, especially when there is other places within the Crystal City area you can receive better for same price.

I was having some pre-welcoming reception cocktails at this hotel bar. I was at the Marriott Crystal City Gateway for a major industry meeting in December. The bar was packed with attendees, but the staff took it like a champ and gave great service. I ordered my bourbon and coke and got it in no time. The place is spacious and comfortable considering the amount of people who were in here! I greatly enjoyed my time here, conversing with colleagues I had not seen in months!

    Grand buffet

We ate here twice during our stay. We had dinner and breakfast. Their dinner menu is very small. We ordered a burger and chocolate cake. The burger and fries were surprisingly very good and much cheaper than expected. The cake wasn't that great. Breakfast-we ordered the grand buffet. It was extremely over priced for the offering. That doesn't mean it wasn't good, it just wasn't near anywhere worth $25/person.

I'm at the Westin next door and they quit serving food at 2200; lame. Great customer service. Waited 10 minutes for my burger. I'm a fan.

The food was expensive and was sub-par. The service was very poor. If I could give a zero, I would. I won't be back.

For under $70 two people can have crab cakes benedict, fried brussels, crispy French toast... I don't even remember. Like ten different things! I didn't have to eat again until 9pm. The food was great! Vinny, who was our handler (clearly he has training in special education or something because we that table. Or maybe the TIPS trainings have advanced to include messy brunch people) was fun, patient, and knowledgeable. This is THE SPOT for brunch on Sunday.

Let's start with the unexpected hero of this story... the chicken sandwich. This thing had absolutely no business being as good as it was. The breaded chicken slapped, the pickle had that perfect crisp snap, and the brioche bun came strolling in like it knew it was the prettiest person at the party. Seriously, that bun deserves recognition for its supporting role. Even the fries were really good, and I'm not a fries guy. Usually fries are just the edible packing material keeping my sandwich from sliding around the plate, but I actually found myself eating these voluntarily. Unfortunately, my margarita was aggressively mid. It wasn't bad. It wasn't good. It was technically a margarita and successfully completed all contractual obligations associated with being one. The atmosphere was... a restaurant. There were tables. There were chairs. People ate food at them. No particular vibe or energy jumped out at me. Service was similarly pure, uncut service. We ordered things. Those things arrived. Transactions occurred. Mission accomplished. Would I go back? Absolutely if someone suggested it. Would I cross state lines and embark on a pilgrimage? Probably not. But I'd order that chicken sandwich again without hesitation... and maybe ask if they'll put my margarita on a brioche bun too.

We had the chicken karage and pork XLB to start. We were too polite to fight over the four small dumplings but chopsticks certainly clashed in the karage bowl - luckily the portion for that was large enough that even my cantankerous husband declared he could have been happy with that alone. For the main I had the garlic noodles with shrimp, and oh my gosh. Think of the scene from Ratatouille (yes that one) only with buttered noodles. This dish perfectly evokes comfort-food coziness while somehow also displaying complexity and class. Delicious. The cocktails are unique but passable. I had the nimbus cloud, an interesting mix of ingredients that earns the highly coveted designation of "not too sweet." Aforementioned cantankerous husband declared his old fashioned "the worst he has ever received in his life." Though probably his fault for not choosing something from the extensive menu. The new space in Crystal City is a nice vibe with a Paris streaterie/speakeasy feel, but watch your step in the alley as it's fully open to cars and therefore always steps away from chaos. We sat indoors and had a hard time hearing each other over the loud space (who doesn't love shouting WHAT? directly in your dining companions' ears through a mouthful of garlic noodles?) but honestly, once the food arrived we sort of forgot each other existed for a time. I'll be back for sure, don't judge the solo diner in the corner with enough garlic noodles to feed a family of four.

It doesn't matter if it's a dreary Tuesday night or you're at the bar debating whether the Commanders should become the Redskins again--it's always a great place to be. Where else do you find yourself sharing your fries because someone says, "That crab cake looks so good," and you casually cut it in half? That's the kind of place this is. The patrons are among the friendliest I've encountered anywhere (a special thanks to the regulars). On one packed football night, there wasn't a seat available in the house. Guess what happened? A group of loud, hungry, football-loving fans squeezed me in at their table like we'd known each other for years. Okay, let's get to the food. Did I mention the crab cakes? Remember, I'm a native Washingtonian from blue crab country. They're not the best crab cakes between Baltimore, DC and Annapolis (competition is fierce) --but they are the best $21 crab cake sandwich I've foun, served on a brioche bun with fries and coleslaw. Ever been to Bourbon Street? The Bourbon Street Chicken & Shrimp brings those flavors to your table, with blackened chicken and shrimp drizzled in a sweet bourbon glaze over creamy mashed potatoes. Now for the cholesterol... those huge, crispy onion rings are fried to perfection. Love pasta? Try the Chicken Alfredo. It's generously portioned with grilled chicken, broccoli, and a rich Alfredo sauce that's perfectly balanced with the pasta. (I hate when pasta is swimming in sauce.) Believe me, I've only scratched the surface. If you see me there (I'm the guy in the hat in the photo), stop by and say hello. The first beer is on me!
