Normally when we go camping I don't care about wi-fi or cell signal because I'm too busy building fire pits and what not, but when we're at a site that we can't exactly just let our dogs go off and roam (because they will steal people's food... Yogi Bear Syndrome), we tend to be confined to our sleeping arrangement areas; lo and behold, we had cell signal! A+ for that. We Netflixed any time we were going to be inside for longer than an hour. The whole campground is pretty nice. We only saw about half, but it seemed to go a lot further than we ventured while pulling the camper. Each site has space big enough for at least a car and some have additional space for a camper (up to 25 feet long). The sites aren't too close together so that's nice. And most of the area is riddled with benches and a couple of fire pits. While we were here we took our dogs on a hike that followed the campsite/highway. Really beautiful and leisurely walk. There were a couple of rules to this site that you should know... 1. It's $20 to camp or picnic here for one car (a trailer or camper doesn't count as an additional vehicle)/two people any more than that and I think there is an additional fee. 2. Dogs must remain on a leash and they do have people checking. 3. Generators can't be ran past 10 PM and before 6 AM. All in all, I enjoyed this campsite for what it was and if we ever need to find a quick spot to tie us over for the night, this will be our first stop.

The trails in the national forest were clean, and easy to walk on. The markers on this trail were far and few between, but the trail was pretty obvious. We got to see elk and mule deer along the way. Also noticed on the back side of the trail there is a frisbee golf course. The leaves were turning over their fall colors. I would love to try this or some of the other area trails again in the winter snow. This park is very close to the village of Cloudcroft so if you need anything to prep for your outdoor adventures, you are close. We will return.

Listed as family friend, yet we got a complaint that our kids noise was excessive from INSIDE of the cabin. The cabin comes with bad views and lots of attitude. Lodging walls are plastered in cheap tacky prints in goodwill frames with price tags on every single one. The "maintenance guy" came onto the property on our 1st morning to yell at us and treat us like children over the fire pit we used the night before, while my husband was still sleeping. He came trying to intimidate us, threatening that we are going to be charged for excessive damage, at the very start of our stay. There is NO communication here. No instructions, no checkout or checkin information, nothing. We placed a log on a propane firepit because we were supplied a nearly empty propane tank, and were unaware we could burn a log. Again, no information about ANYTHING anywhere inside or out, just an inaccurate map. After being berated and yelled at by the "maintenance man" multipe visits, we spent our Saturday morning cleaning out that firepit with our bare hands. It looked and functioned 10x better than when we arrived. Not my idea of vacationing! So we didn't mess with it the remainder of our 2 days there, robbing us of one of the few amenities we came for. We came for the view and campfire, both we didn't get to experience here. We went to politely and professionally talk to the owner after the maintenance man drama and he could care less and then sat there making lavish statememts, and saying comments like, "wheres your realtors license"... huh?!?! There's lots of lodging in this area, stay anywhere but here! You will find better accommodations at cheaper prices. Also, after reading my negative reviews, the camp sent me a private message on social media calling me "low life". The owner also made a very bizarre comment on my Facebook review requesting that I friend him. This is the usual MO with any negative review (guest shaming and intimidation) as you can see on any site with 1 star reviews.

The spaces weren't super far apart, but we had plenty of room to sit out in our camp chairs and be socially distanced from any other campers without having to wear masks. We had full hookups. The only downside is the highway noise, but all the RV parks in Ruidoso that we saw (and there are A LOT of them) are just off the highway. The fishing lake on site is super cute and if you don't catch anything, you don't pay anything. We caught trout both times we fished. You also don't need any equipment or bait because it's provided. Just show up as you are! There are even apple trees on the property, so we are planning to come back in September or October to taste the apples. Will definitely stay here again. We had a 10 day reservation with this "park", which was not marketed adequately. It is a small…read moregravel parking lot and does not have dirt parking, as advertised. The space we were assigned to was a very steep grade back-in spot. We had to use 4 wheel drive in order to back into the spot. We had no trees for shade and terrible views. This was not the mountain camping experience we were hoping for at $50 per night!! There was a small grassy rectangle for our dogs to potty in but it had not been mowed in quite some time. The grass was taller than our dogs! We were parked in front of a run down A-frame shed, which was our back view. Our front view was a dumpster in front of trees. Our side views were the RV parked beside us which our awning almost touched and a gravel drive going up to the A frame shed. Below the driveway were two vacant, nice camp sites. I'm not sure where the pictures were taken on their website, but they don't look like where we stayed! We called the booking agent, Glenda and asked her to reassign us to one of the two lower sites which had nice shade trees and were pull thru spaces. She said she could not do that because she had them reserved for other short term guests. To no avail, I tried to reason with her that the long term guests should have the nicer site, rather than the two short term guests. I asked to talk to the owner, Eric, but we never heard from him or Glenda again. Because it was Labor Day weekend, we could not find another place to stay until after the holiday. We moved on Monday to another RV Park that was MUCH nicer and accommodating at $26 per night, with beautiful shade trees, grass and dirt. I have called Glenda and talked with her once and left two messages since requesting a refund of the amount we had to pay to the other campground. We are not asking for a full refund of the remaining days, but only what we had to pay to the other campground in light of the poor advertising. ($228.90) Sugar Pines policy is to pay the full payment up front and no refunds. I assure you there is a reason they have that policy. They are extremely difficult to work with and the parking lot is not where you would want to stay for a mountain type vacation. Trust me and learn from our awful experience. Don't make your reservation at Sugar Pines! Reserve a space at the the Cool Pines RV Park in Mayhill. You will be MUCH happier with that RV park! Be sure to drive by the Sugar Pines lot as confirmation that you are much better off not staying here!

We had called and spoke to the owner to see if we could check in a bit early and be was completely ok with it. When we got there the camp host was extremely rude saying we were there too early being that no one was in our spot and there were so many other empty spots available. we then had our campfire on and eight at 10 she came and advised it was quiet time and the fire needed to be turned off due to "county law" which is complete BS mind you we were not even loud we were just hanging out and there are zero rules staring that fires need to be out at 10. The next night she again came rudely 3 minutes past 10 when we were already putting our fire out stating "REALLY 2 NIGHTS IN A ROW!!" we said we are putting our fire out and she said "well get your clocks fixed to be on time". we pay a lot of money to enjoy our time there. I feel the owner needs to look into this because the campground was not as full as it usually is and they may be running people out with that unnecessary attitude and rudeness.

Picnic tables and grills make this a nice spot for campers who want something a bit more developed than dispersed forest camping. This campground is at 6,800ft in elevation and is open year round. It's easy to find and is located two miles west of Mayhill right along US-82 and is about twenty minutes east of Cloudcroft, making it a nice stopping point between Carlsbad Caverns National Park and White Sands National Monument.
