The gentleman owner was keeping the store open after hours when he saw the large group of bike riders milling about at Odie's. Well, that garnered him at least two sales. Many small stores in small towns such as Ely look the part of someone just trying to follow their dream, with little preparation and know-how, but this shop is different. It is well decorated, with careful thought as to how merchandise should be displayed. It is not a bare bones, quickly thrown together place, ala those that are just open for the Christmas season. You know the type. They have a nice selection of clothes geared to Hawkeye fans, Cyclone fans, and bike riders as well. The clothes for cyclists are not biking clothes, rather normal shirts, etc with a cycling motif. They also had merchandise very suitable for baby showers. We made a return trip two days later to pick up a U of I jacket that my wife liked, and the woman on duty was very nice. All in all, a very nice addition to Ely.

And the vast majority of it is all printed and designed by them! This Iowa-based company is absolutely delightful! Everything you find here is going to be unique and wonderful and this is just the exact kind of company I love supporting! They are so bold and out here with their products and if you've got any halfway decent sense of humor, you are sure to find a ton of goodies here to appreciate and purchase! This store encapsulates the Midwesterner state of mind perfectly and I just absolutely love it! This specific Raygun store is located in the extremely quaint and cute downtown Cedar Falls area and so at the front of the store in particular, they have specific products and merch geared towards Cedar Falls especially! I believe one of their bigger stores is located within Des Moines and I will be visiting it very soon and can't wait to see what delightfully fun finds I discover here! My only request to Raygun is for some more representation of other states in the Midwest! As an Iowa-based company, I obviously see and understand the overwhelming majority of Iowa-related products, but I've also seen some Kansas and Ohio merch as well and as a Michigander, I would really love some Michigan representation too! Some regional stuff and Iowa stuff but definitely not for everyone, especially if they don't have a sense of humor. There was even stuff for dogs. Even the sign out front is fun and it explains Midwest weather. Employees were nice, friendly, smile on their face. Store is large, 2 levels, there are also dressing rooms.

Ten Thousand Villages is a fabulous retail spot to support. While the store has over a hundred locations in North America-- they do fair trade right. Every handmade purchase directly impacts the life and community of its maker in a developing country. I hopped on their site one day during quarantine to shop with my mom in mind. The site is so, SO easy to navigate. There's a Gift Finder tab that I found extremely helpful. I opted for the Recycled Sari Flowers. No two flowers are entirely alike due to them recycling fabric. They were made in Bangladesh. (My mom does NOT have a green thumb. I feel like fabric flowers will be welcomed.) On the site, you get to see a blurb about the maker of each item. It makes you feel good to see who you're supporting with your purchase. Shop Ten Thousand Villages for any gift giving you may have. Whether it is during social distancing on their site, or at their store in the ped-mall. It is a literal treasure trove.

The two poinsettias I chose didn't have foil wrappers on them, they were just in the black grow pots. I asked the salesperson working if they had any extra foil wrappers, and he explained that their supplier didn't send them with the plants (or ran out, I can't remember which). This was kind of disappointing. I thought for sure Earl May would have a back stock of these cheap foil wrappers, but there wasn't any attempt made to go beyond the explanation I was given or even recommend what I might use in their place. I wasn't going to buy pots. I didn't press the issue because these were for myself. Had I been buying them for others as gifts, I would have put them back, or asked that a wrapper be taken off of another plant. Not sure why I didn't ask about this in the first place, other than it seemed like I would have been inconveniencing this employee. Since I had the gift card and a coupon, I went ahead and left with the ones I had chosen. Their overall selection was pretty skimpy at the time I was there. poinsettias were just on one display near the cash register area. My poinsettias are still alive, though I wouldn't say thriving. Nice, clean store. Nice items for sale. Customer services was fine, but not extraordinary. Few customers and enough employees that I expected better. For selection I recommend Iowa City Landscaping and Garden Center or make the drive to Pierson's in Cedar Rapids.

I purchased 2 pink dogwoods and followed all of the planting, watering, and soil treatment guidelines per the staff and plant library recommendations. First tree did not make it through the winter. The replacement did not even make it 3 months despite doing everything staff recommended. ' To my dismay, the company will not replace a tree a 2nd time, so I am out over $250.00. For that reason, in spite of the helpful staff, I am taking my business to local greenhouses (whose prices are typically much more consumer friendly).

I had to walk around the store several times to make sure I didn't miss anything.
